Why electrification is making in-car discovery increasingly important for charging networks

For EV drivers, charging can be much more than a stop along the way. It can shape the journey itself.

Where can I charge? Which station fits my route? How far away is it? And which option makes the most sense for the journey ahead?

These questions are already visible in driver behavior. On the 4screen platform, EV charging stations account for 22% of all category search requests, making charging the most-searched category.1

As mobility becomes increasingly electric, questions like these are also changing the role of the vehicle’s native navigation system. Rather than simply guiding drivers from A to B, navigation can help EV drivers plan around range, identify charging options and decide where to stop along the way.

The charging experience happens at the plug. But the decision about where to charge increasingly starts on the in-car screen.

Electrification Is changing the role of navigation

The transition to electric mobility is not simply changing how vehicles are powered. It is adding new considerations to the journey itself.

For EV drivers, factors such as remaining range, route, charging availability and the location of suitable charging stations can all influence when and where to stop. Native navigation systems are becoming an important part of managing these decisions, helping drivers discover charging locations and incorporate charging into the route ahead.

As a result, the navigation screen takes on a broader role. It is not only helping drivers reach a destination. Increasingly, it can help determine which destinations become part of the journey in the first place.

For charging networks, that makes discoverability inside the vehicle increasingly important. Physical infrastructure remains fundamental. But having a charger in the right place only creates an opportunity if drivers can find it when they need it.

From search to destination

The prominence of EV charging in category search is only one part of the picture. 4screen platform data also shows what happens after drivers engage with those search results.

84% of clicks on EV charging search results lead to a navigation start to the charging location.2 This provides a direct link between in-car search behavior and destination choice. Drivers searching for charging are not simply browsing available options: in many cases, that interaction is followed by a decision to navigate to a charging location.

Which location ultimately becomes the destination can depend on factors such as charging speed and cost, proximity, convenience, familiarity, surrounding amenities and how easily the charging option can be discovered within the journey.

McKinsey research reinforces the importance of the fundamentals: 42% of respondents identified charging speed as their most important consideration when selecting a public charge point, with cost ranking second.3 But the charging destination itself can matter too. Research from Next 10 and the Institute for Transportation Studies at UC Davis found that, among the California EV drivers studied, drivers were 37% more likely to choose a charger with nearby amenities such as restrooms or convenience stores.4

For charging providers, this makes the period between the need to charge and the final destination choice a particularly relevant moment to be visible – and to give drivers useful information about the location.

From visibility to destination choice

As charging networks expand and drivers gain more choice, charging providers are increasingly competing not only on infrastructure, but also on visibility, convenience and the overall customer experience.

4screen’s platform data shows that this visibility is frequently followed by action. Across Branded Pin campaigns, EV charging stands out for turning visibility into destination action: drivers are 6× more likely to progress from seeing a pin to clicking on it and ultimately starting navigation than in other verticals.5

The connection can also be observed beyond digital interaction. 60% of vehicles exposed to an EV charging Branded Pin campaign were observed parking at the promoted charging location within 24 hours of exposure.6

Together, these signals show how in-car interaction can accompany different stages of the charging journey – from discovering a location on the map and engaging with it to starting navigation and ultimately arriving at the destination.

For charging networks, this means the opportunity is not only to expand their physical footprint, but also to strengthen their presence inside the vehicle – where drivers are searching, navigating and deciding where to go next.

Reaching drivers at the point of need

A driver looking for an EV charging station does not need to be convinced that charging matters. The opportunity is to connect that existing need with a relevant destination.

Through 4screen, charging providers can become part of the native navigation and infotainment experience at different stages of that decision.

Branded Pins can strengthen visibility directly on the vehicle map, helping charging locations stand out throughout the journey.

Sponsored In-Car Search can give charging providers greater visibility when drivers actively search for nearby charging stations – one of the clearest expressions of immediate driver intent.

Recommendations can surface relevant charging destinations based on vehicle context – for example, when an electric vehicle’s battery level is running low – connecting an immediate charging need with a relevant recommended location.

And the Detail Screen, as an extension of 4screen’s core ad formats, allows charging providers to showcase additional information about a location, including available amenities and services, helping drivers make a more informed destination choice.

Together, the formats address different moments around the same driver need: being discovered, providing relevant information and helping drivers reach a charging destination.

A growing charging ecosystem

The growing role of charging is also visible across the 4screen platform. In the past six months alone, more than 15 different EV charging providers have been live on the 4screen platform across 10 countries.7

As charging infrastructure expands, the number of potential destinations available to drivers grows with it. For providers, being present where those destinations are discovered and selected can therefore become an increasingly important part of the customer journey.

The opportunity starts on the in-car screen

As electric mobility continues to grow, charging is becoming an increasingly important part of the journey – and so is the decision of where to charge.

For charging networks, this creates an opportunity to be present before drivers arrive at the station, at the moment they are actively looking for their next charging destination.

The charging experience may happen at the plug, but the decision often happens before – on the in-car screen. That’s where the opportunity begins.

Ready to connect with EV drivers while they’re deciding where to charge? Discover how 4screen helps charging networks connect with drivers through the native in-car experience.

Why September Creates New Destination Decisions for Millions of Drivers

Summer changes where people travel. September changes how they live.

Every September, millions of people return from summer holidays and begin rebuilding the routines that shape everyday life. School restarts. Work schedules normalise. Weekend errands return. The familiar rhythm of daily journeys begins again.

New school schedules, extracurricular activities and work routines create dozens of new decisions throughout the week. Which supermarket is most convenient after school pick-up? Where’s the easiest fuel stop on the commute home? Which retailer fits into Saturday errands?

Most people think of back-to-school as a retail season. But it’s something much bigger.

It’s one of the few moments each year when everyday routines are rewritten – and with them, the destinations people choose along the way.

For brands, this creates something rare: a moment when consumers are actively reconsidering everyday destinations before new routines become established.

When routines change, destination decisions open up

Most daily journeys follow familiar patterns. People visit the same supermarket, stop at the same coffee shop, choose the same fuel station, or park in familiar locations. Once established, these routines tend to remain remarkably stable.

Back-to-school temporarily disrupts those patterns. Every new routine creates new decisions. Where to shop. Where to stop. Where to park. Which route to take.

As those new routines take shape, dozens of new destination decisions emerge throughout the week. And whenever people are deciding where to go, that’s when visibility matters most. That’s when they’re searching – actively choosing between options rather than simply following habit.

The data reveals a consistent mobility pattern

4screen’s in-car mobility data from across European and North American markets reveals a remarkably consistent mobility pattern during the back-to-school period.

As routines return, drivers search more frequently for everyday destinations from inside their vehicles. Across 4screen’s key markets, in-car searches for grocery retailers increased by an average of 45% compared with the yearly average during the back-to-school period.1

While grocery searches consistently increased across all analysed markets, making supermarkets one of the clearest indicators of changing routine behaviour, the pattern extends well beyond grocery. Searches for retail destinations, parking, fuel and, in several markets, quick service restaurants also increase during the same period.¹

Rather than pointing to demand in a single category, these trends reveal something broader: as routines reset, drivers actively search for destinations that fit into their new weekly journeys.

Saturday is the decision window

One of the clearest patterns emerges on Saturdays. Across 4screen’s key markets, Saturdays during the back-to-school period consistently show significantly elevated in-car search activity compared with yearly Saturday averages.

Grocery searches increased by an average of 57% above the yearly Saturday baseline.2 Retail searches show similar patterns, increasing an average of 39% on Saturdays during the same period.3

+57%

Grocery searches on Saturdays

+39%

Retail searches on Saturdays

Across markets, weekends consistently emerge as the moment when destination decisions become most concentrated. The data suggests this is when many households reorganisetheir routines, complete essential shopping and prepare for the week ahead, creating a predictable window of high intent.

What this reveals is timing precision. Saturday isn’t simply a higher traffic day. It’s a high-intent day.

Drivers are actively searching for destinations while decisions are being made. That’s very different from simply driving past a location. It’s a genuine moment of choice.

For brands, this creates a valuable opportunity to be present when consumers are actively evaluating their options rather than simply following an established routine.

The opportunity behind the routine reset

For much of the year, drivers rely on familiar routines and destinations. September creates a moment when those established patterns begin to shift. As routines are re-established, drivers naturally make more destination decisions than they do during established routines. That makes the period especially valuable.

It’s not about volume alone. It’s about influence.

Brands that are visible during these decision moments have a rare opportunity to influence destination choice while new routines are still taking shape.

For brands, this makes September one of the few moments in the year when marketing can engage consumers before everyday destination choices become established.

The in-car advantage

In-car experiences connect brands with drivers throughout the decision making journey.

Every journey begins with a reason, whether it’s commuting to work, running errands, meeting friends, refuelling or picking up food.

That purpose creates intent – but not always a destination. Drivers often know what they need before they’ve decided where they’ll go.

Native formats such as Branded Pins make brands visible throughout the journey, allowing drivers to discover relevant locations naturally as they navigate. Drivers don’t always begin their journey with a search. Sometimes, seeing a relevant brand on the map is enough to influence the next stop.

As intent becomes more specific, search creates another valuable opportunity. When drivers actively look for a destination, in-car search captures that moment with unusual precision. It happens exactly at the point of decision, when a driver is choosing where to go, not days in advance during a planning session. That’s why mobility data provides such a clear view of real-world intent: it reflects decisions as they are being made.

Whether through Branded Pins that build visibility, sponsored search results that capture active demand, or contextual recommendations that guide drivers along the way, 4screen’s native in-car formats help brands become part of the driver’s decision making journey.

Make your brand part of the new routine

September isn’t simply back-to-school in a marketing sense. It’s a moment when millions of people simultaneously rebuild the routines that shape everyday life.

As those routines take shape, so do the destination decisions that define everyday journeys. Understanding this mobility shift is about more than planning a seasonal campaign. It’sabout recognising one of the few moments each year when everyday destination choices become more fluid, creating a unique opportunity for brands to engage consumers while new routines are still taking shape.

What happens when millions of people leave their routines behind at the same time?

Every summer, travel patterns shift dramatically. Commuters become holidaymakers, familiar routes give way to new destinations, and drivers spend more time navigating unfamiliar locations, searching for places to stop, and discovering destinations they may never have visited before.

The result is more than a seasonal increase in traffic. It is a period of heightened discovery, where navigation, search, and recommendations play a greater role in shaping real-world decisions. For brands, this creates a unique opportunity to engage consumers while they are actively exploring, searching, and deciding where to go next.

Summer doesn’t just create more journeys. It creates more moments of discovery.

Summer Travel Creates a Unique Mobility Peak

Summer is Europe’s busiest travel season. 80% of people in 4screen’s key European markets1 take a summer holiday, with around half preferring to travel by car2.

At the same time, the vast majority of travel remains domestic. More than 70%3 of trips made by EU residents take place within national borders, highlighting the continued importance of regional and national travel over international tourism.

What makes summer particularly significant is how concentrated this movement becomes. In July and August alone, around a quarter3 of all annual trips take place – a sharp seasonal increase in road traffic across highways, cities, tourist destinations, and regional routes.

For drivers, this means more time spent on the road. For brands, it means a significant increase in opportunities to engage consumers throughout the journey.

But the true marketing opportunity isn’t simply created by higher traffic volumes. It’s created by the change in driver behavior that comes with it.

The Summer Journey: From Departure to Destination – Every Moment is a Marketing Moment

The increase in summer mobility doesn’t just change where people travel. It also changes when and how they make decisions throughout the day.

4screen data reveals distinct patterns in driver intent during the summer months, with searches clustering around predictable needs and key moments of the journey. From preparing for the road ahead to discovering destinations after arrival, drivers increasingly rely on in-car search and navigation to guide their choices.

Hitting the Road

Before departure, drivers focus on journey readiness. Can the car make it? Where are the charging stations? Fuel and EV searches spike 39%4 during summer. This is the moment when drivers are solving a practical problem: range and refueling logistics. For fuel retailers, EV networks, and quick-service offerings, this is a high-intent window where drivers are actively searching for solutions.

The Pit Stop

After hours on the road, drivers need to eat and stretch. Dining searches spike 49%4 during summer. But timing matters. The lunch window (11am–2pm) concentrates 36%5 of all daily dining intent. For restaurants and QSR brands, reaching drivers during peak lunch hours delivers disproportionate impact.

Settling In

Once travelers arrive at their destination, the first priority shifts to essentials. Supermarket searches spike 132%4 during summer. Whether it’s stocking an Airbnb, finding a pharmacy, or grabbing supplies at a convenience store, travelers in unfamiliar territory are in active-search mode for practical items. This high search intent reveals that essential services are a critical touchpoint when travelers are establishing themselves in a new location. Drivers are actively relying on in-car navigation to find what they need.

Out Exploring

Once the basics are handled, drivers branch out. Parking searches spike 32%4 during summer as drivers begin seeking attractions and experiences. Unlike the earlier moments, this search is less urgent and more exploratory. Drivers are no longer solving immediate needs; they’re discovering what the destination offers.

Summer doesn’t create uniform demand. It creates distinct moments – each with different customer intent and urgency. The search patterns reveal that drivers prioritize different categories at different times during their trip. Brands that recognize and position for these specific moments – rather than treating summer as a single high-traffic period – capture disproportionate returns.

Summer 2026 Is Yours to Win – If You Understand the Shift

Summer reveals what matters to drivers. When they’re out of their routines, relying on navigation to solve real problems, their priorities become crystal clear. The brands that win aren’t the loudest. They’re the ones that show up for what drivers actually need, when they need it.

This isn’t a media strategy. This is customer strategy. It starts with understanding that summer isn’t just bigger – it’s different. It requires positioning your brand where and when drivers are actively searching for solutions, not just where traffic is highest.

The drivers are coming. Their screens are their guides. And they’re making decisions in real-time. The question is: will your brand understand what they actually need?

Ready to rethink your summer strategy around these insights? Let’s discuss what that looks like for your brand. We work with brands across all categories to design campaigns that align with how drivers actually discover and decide.

The 2026 World Cup is more than a media event – it’s a mobility event.

16 host cities across three countries. 6.5 million1 expected attendees. More than 1.2 million2 international visitors. The 2026 World Cup is expected to become one of the largest live sporting events ever staged across North America.

But while most brand planning still focuses on broadcast, sponsorship, and social media visibility, another part of the fan experience is becoming increasingly important: movement.

Fans travel between stadiums, watch parties, restaurants, hotels, and host cities throughout tournament periods. They search for food before kickoff, stop for fuel or charging, and navigate unfamiliar destinations along the way.

That is what makes major sporting events more than just media events.

They are mobility events.

The fan journey starts before kickoff – and it mostly happens in a car

The upcoming tournament is projected to generate massive activity across host cities and surrounding regions. But the fan experience is not concentrated around stadiums alone. It extends across entire mobility ecosystems, from airports and highways to restaurants, retail destinations, and entertainment districts. For many fans, the event will also become a gateway to broader travel, tourism, and exploration throughout their stay3.

A major sporting tournament like the upcoming World Cup is not one single journey. It is a sequence of connected moments unfolding across an entire day or weekend.

For fans, that can include:

driving to watch parties, stadiums, or fan zones

searching for food or convenience stops along the way

stopping for fuel or charging between destinations

exploring cities during non-match days

In the United States especially, the car remains the dominant way people move. Around 9 in 10 trips in the U.S. are made by car4, and road travel is expected to surge during major tournament periods. For the upcoming World Cup, nearly 1 in 6 Americans are planning to take road trips connected to host destinations, with cars ranking as the preferred transportation mode5.

This creates a unique environment for brands. Unlike traditional advertising channels, the in-car experience is directly connected to real world intent – where people are going, what they are searching for, how long they are traveling, and what they may need along the way.

Each moment carries different intent, context, and needs, creating opportunities for brands to engage audiences when relevance is naturally highest.

A restaurant promotion on the route to a watch party feels useful. A charging recommendation during intercity travel feels timely. A nearby retail destination surfaced near a stadium district feels contextual rather than disruptive.

In other words, movement creates moments where utility and brand discovery can naturally align.

Why context outperforms reach during cultural moments

During tournaments like the World Cup, those high-intent moments multiply rapidly. Fans are not simply consuming content – they are actively navigating experiences.

Major sporting events create high emotional engagement. Fans are more attentive, socially active, and deeply connected to the experience surrounding the event itself.

Recent research6 found that brands engaging audiences through culturally relevant and contextually delivered advertising achieved significantly stronger engagement and purchase intent than more general advertising approaches. In the study, culturally aligned advertising environments drove up to 3x higher purchase intent, while contextual relevance strengthened event association and helped brands feel more naturally connected to the cultural moment itself.

This is where in-car marketing becomes particularly powerful. Unlike traditional advertising channels that compete for attention during the match itself, mobility-based engagement creates contextually relevant touchpoints throughout the fan journey – from pre-match travel and restaurant stops to charging moments and the drive home afterward.

As fans move through cities and make decisions in real-time, brands have an opportunity to engage in ways that feel timely, useful, and naturally connected to the moment itself.

Industries built around movement stand to benefit most

Many of the industries expected to benefit most from large-scale cultural events depend heavily on physical visits and real world mobility. Research around the 2026 World Cup1 points to strong economic impact across sectors such as food and hospitality, wholesale and retail, and transport related industries – all areas closely tied to large scale movement and destination based activity.

These industries all share one thing in common: they rely on people moving through the physical world, making mobility environments an increasingly valuable channel for brand discovery and engagement.

Brands are already using connected in-car environments to drive measurable outcomes during real world mobility moments. Across categories such as QSR, retail, and fuel, campaigns have delivered strong engagement and navigation uplift by reaching drivers while they are already in motion and close to points of sale.

Three ways brands can activate the in-car moment

Today, the 4screen Driver Interaction Platform enhances the driving experience across markets in North America and Europe through partnerships with leading automotive brands. During major live events like the 2026 World Cup, this creates new opportunities for brands to engage audiences throughout the fan journey, directly within the driving experience itself.

As millions of fans move through unfamiliar cities and destinations during major cultural events, the connected car is evolving beyond navigation into a real-time discovery platform used to surface relevant destinations and services along the journey.

Branded Pins increase discoverability and location awareness for nearby points of interest, such as match locations with up to date event information.

Sponsored In-Car Search helps drivers discover relevant destinations directly within in-car search results during high intent moments.

In-Car Recommendations use real time vehicle and route context to surface timely and relevant suggestions based on driver needs.

What makes the driving environment especially valuable is that relevance is shaped in real-time through movement, proximity, route context, and vehicle signals – creating opportunities for brands to engage drivers while they are already in motion, close to points of sale, and able to act immediately.

The future of fan engagement happens in motion

The world’s biggest sporting moments no longer happen only inside stadiums or on television screens. They unfold across cities, destinations, and the journeys between them. As millions of fans move through host regions during events like the 2026 World Cup, mobility itself becomes part of the experience – and with it comes a new generation of contextual brand interactions.

For brands, the opportunity is no longer only about visibility during the match itself, but about being present throughout the broader fan journey.

Because the fan journey does not start at kickoff. It begins on the road.

From Roadsides to the Driving Journey: How Mobility Became a Media Channel in Its Own Right

Brands have long sought to reach people in motion, yet the journey itself remained largely inaccessible as a media environment. Drivers pass billboards they barely register and hear radio messages disconnected from their destination. Mobility has always created commercial opportunity, but the channels designed to capture it have been fragmented and indirect. The result is a paradox: movement signals intent, yet media has historically operated around the journey rather than within it.

Today, that dynamic is changing. As vehicles become connected digital environments and navigation systems grow more intelligent, the driving journey is emerging as a unified media space – shaped by real-time context, proximity, and decision-making. To understand how this shift became possible, it helps to look at how mobility media has evolved.

Reaching People in Motion: The Roadside Era

Long before digital targeting or connected devices, brands understood that movement creates attention. The rise of automobiles in the early twentieth century transformed roads into commercial corridors. Billboards, gas station signage, and transit posters became some of the earliest forms of mobility media – meeting consumers while they were physically on the move.

This era was defined by:

The message was the same for every driver, regardless of destination or intent. Yet it established a foundational idea: mobility is a powerful advertising environment.

Media Enters the Vehicle: The Radio Revolution

The introduction of car radios in the 1920s and 1930s brought a major shift. For the first time, media did not just sit alongside the road – it entered the vehicle itself. Radio transformed the car into an attention space, giving brands direct access to drivers throughout their journey. Yet it remained a broadcast medium. Messages were distributed broadly, without location awareness or contextual relevance. Mobility had become an advertising environment – but not yet an intelligent one.

The Digital Layer: When Mobility Became Data

A major shift began in the early 2000s. As civilian GPS accuracy improved, location data became reliable enough for widespread commercial use. Navigation devices and early in-car systems could now determine precise geographic positions in real time. Movement was no longer just physical – it became structured data. Yet this shift was technical rather than commercial. While movement could now be tracked and processed, these systems were not designed as advertising ecosystems.

The Smartphone Shift: Addressable Mobility

The launch of the smartphone marked a decisive shift. With GPS-enabled devices in nearly every pocket, brands could reach consumers based on precise, real-time location. Geo-fencing, local search ads, and map-based promotions became standard tools in digital marketing. Mobility became addressable. Proximity to stores, restaurants, and services could trigger targeted messaging, bringing physical movement and digital advertising closer together. Yet smartphones introduced a structural gap. They operated alongside the driving experience rather than within it. Interaction required shifting attention away from the vehicle’s primary interface, creating friction between utility and engagement. Mobility was digital – but still fragmented.

Platform-Based Mobility Media: The Rise of Ride Hailing

The rapid growth of ride hailing platforms in the 2010s introduced a new commercial layer to mobility. For the first time at digital scale, real-time trip data powered advertising within app-based transportation ecosystems. Individual journeys became monetizable inside closed platform environments. Mobility became platform driven. Yet these environments remained contained within specific apps. Media operated inside transactional journeys, while the broader driving population – particularly private vehicle drivers – remained outside this framework. Mobility media had scaled, but only within platform-controlled ecosystems.

The Connected Vehicle Era: Media Embedded in Motion

Today, vehicles are evolving from hardware-focused machines into connected, software-driven platforms. The rise of software-defined vehicles is reshaping not only automotive engineering, but driver expectations as well. Cars are increasingly expected to be connected, intelligent, and continuously updated – comparable to the digital devices people use every day. As a result, the vehicle is no longer just a mode of transport, but a digital environment that accompanies the journey and adapts in real-time. In this environment, navigation, services, and digital content are increasingly integrated directly into the driving interface – transforming the car into an intelligent, connected ecosystem.

Where Decision Meets Proximity

As this new phase takes shape, a key shift becomes clear: mobility media is most powerful when integrated directly into the systems that guide the journey – aligning brand visibility with proximity, route, and driver intent.

When brand presence is embedded into the utility of the vehicle itself – rather than delivered through an over-the-top application layer – it becomes part of the navigation experience drivers already rely on. This is the emergence of what we describe as Native Mobility Media.

Why Native Mobility Media Wins

Whereas most media compete for attention, native mobility media captures intent. For example, when a driver sees a nearby gas station or restaurant integrated within the map interface, the interaction feels less like an advertisement and more like a relevant solution.

Connected in-car environments can support discovery, but their true strength lies in proximity. This marks the transition from location-based marketing to destination-driven marketing. When drivers explore nearby options or adjust their route, they are often just minutes away from physical purchase.

As the first driver interaction platform integrated directly into the navigation systems of leading automakers, 4screen enables brands to become part of the connected driving experience. By operating within the interface drivers already trust, 4screen bridges the gap between decision and purchase – aligning brand visibility with proximity at the moment intent turns into real-world action.

What Comes Next

Over time, media has moved steadily closer to motion – from roadside visibility to in-vehicle audio, from mobile targeting to connected in-car systems. Mobility media is not a sudden invention, but the natural continuation of that progression.

As automotive technology continues to advance in a connected, software-driven era, mobility media will mature alongside it. In this next chapter, native platforms within connected vehicle ecosystems will play a defining role in how brands connect with drivers in motion.

If you’d like to explore how your brand can become part of the connected driving journey, get in touch with our team.

What Makes Drivers Different From Other Audiences

Not all audiences create the same value for brands. In a media landscape dominated by screens, scrolls, and short attention spans, marketers are increasingly questioning what impact their impressions actually have. Reach is easy to buy. Relevance is not. And turning visibility into real-world action remains one of the biggest challenges in modern marketing.
This is where drivers stand apart. Drivers represent one of the few audiences where impressions don’t exist in isolation, but appear within moments of movement, intent, and proximity. Understanding the value of drivers means understanding when they are reached – not just how often.

Where Driver Value Is Created: Decision Moments in Motion

As in-car screens become larger and native navigation systems more advanced, drivers increasingly rely on the vehicle display as their primary point of reference during their journeys. At the same time, in modern vehicles, the map view is visible by default – even when drivers are not actively following a route. This means context such as location, time, and proximity remains continuously present throughout the journey, with the in-car screen active for around 50 minutes per day1 on average.

Outside the car, most media audiences engage with content intermittently – between apps, across devices, and often detached from real-world context. Driving is inherently purpose-driven behavior. Every journey begins with a reason, whether it’s commuting to work, running errands, meeting friends, refueling, or picking up food. Even when the destination is flexible, the movement itself is intentional.

Being in a driving context reflects a decision mindset, where route, timing, and proximity – informed by real-time vehicle data – actively shape what is relevant as the journey unfolds. Already outside the home and in motion, drivers are physically close to points of sale, operating in a goal-oriented state with choices still open and the ability to act immediately. This is what makes driver moments unique: relevance appears while people are already moving, but outcomes are not yet fixed – creating value through real-world context rather than demographics or attention alone.

From Visibility to Real-World Influence

In-car impressions are delivered in a native, safe environment with fewer competing screens and less noise. Anchored in real-world context, they appear within the driving environment drivers already engage with – without pulling attention away from the journey. By appearing closer to moments of intent, brand visibility gains greater relevance within the journey – increasing the likelihood that visibility translates into real-world impact. For brands, this reframes visibility – from something that competes for attention to something that earns relevance through timing and context. Drivers offer a rare combination of scale, context, and proximity to real-world decision-making, allowing awareness and consideration to remain present as intent develops within a single journey.

Over time, repeated journeys amplify this effect. Commutes, errands, and routine routes create consistent exposure, allowing brands to build familiarity through consistent, contextual presence that supports preference and repeat behavior over time. With drivers making around two to three car trips per day2 on average, in-car visibility becomes part of everyday mobility – not a single, isolated moment.

Turning Driver Moments Into Meaningful Action

Reaching drivers at the right moment requires purpose-built formats that are native to the driving experience, respect context, and align with how decisions are made on the road. This is where the 4screen Driver Interaction Platform enables brands to activate driver value more meaningfully. Through native, navigation-based in-car formats – such as Branded Pins, In-Car Search placements, and contextual Recommendations – brands can increase visibility, capture demand, and surface relevant options directly within the car’s interface, while drivers are already in motion.

In practice, this shift toward relevance shows up in how drivers respond, with interaction increasing by 77%3when Branded Pins appear on the car screen. Beyond engagement, 4screen formats also are also designed to drive real-world action. By observing whether drivers physically stop near a promoted location – a strong proxy for store visits – brands can measure tangible outcomes. Across campaigns, this has translated into an average incremental lift in parking of 3–7%4, demonstrating that in-car visibility can move drivers from awareness to action.

As the year comes to a close, it’s time to look back on a special year – one defined by growth, collaboration, and innovation. From closing a major financing round to expanding our automotive partnerships with world-leading brands and strengthening our presence at industry events around the globe, 2025 has been shaped by exciting milestones and collective progress.

Join us as we look back at the moments that made 2025 a standout year and reinforced 4screen’s role in shaping the future of in-car innovation.

The Team Behind the Momentum

Every milestone at 4screen starts with the people who make it possible. In 2025, our team continued to bring together talent from 30+ nationalities, fostering a culture defined by diversity and collaboration, with more than 40% of our workforce being female.

We expanded our presence in the United States and continued to strengthen connections across all locations – including our teams in Munich, Berlin, and Paris – through regular in-person and hybrid company events.

From carving down the slopes on a ski trip in the Austrian Alps, to toasting our financing round at a summer rooftop party in Munich and celebrating five years of 4screen together – 2025 was filled with shared moments that reflected our culture at its best. We embraced Bavarian tradition in our hometown of Munich during Oktoberfest, closed the year with a festive Christmas party, and made time for plenty of after-work get-togethers in between.

Because at 4screen, every achievement begins with our people – and the connections that keep us moving forward.

Fueling Growth for the Road Ahead
2025 marked a pivotal milestone in 4screen’s journey with the successful closing of our $21 million Series B funding round, announced in July. The new investors joining this round – Bosch Ventures, NewRoad Capital Partners, and Bayern Kapital – bring deep expertise and perspective, each aligned with a key pillar of 4screen’s continued growth.

The Series B will drive global expansion – especially in the United States – and scale our platform to meet growing demand. The focus: entering new markets, advancing technology and data capabilities, and deepening partnerships with brands and OEMs.

All existing Series A investors also returned for this round, reaffirming their continued confidence in 4screen’s long-term vision and growth trajectory. This milestone marks the next phase in our mission to shape the future of driver interaction and mobility media worldwide.

Expanding Our Automotive Ecosystem
2025 was a landmark year for 4screen’s automotive partnerships, marked by two major collaborations that further strengthened our position within the connected car ecosystem.

In July, we announced our partnership with Stellantis, launching across Europe and North America. The 4screen platform is being rolled out across multiple Stellantis brands – including FIAT, Jeep®, and Ram.
“We are focused on delivering connected technology that brings meaningful value to our customers,” said Cristiani Campos, Senior Vice President, Software Business Unit at Stellantis. “Partnering with 4screen helps us give drivers relevant, helpful content on their terms, when and where they need it.”

Just a few months later, in September, 4screen expanded its automotive footprint once again by partnering with Volkswagen to deliver smart in-car recommendations across Europe.
“This collaboration enables us to enhance the digital experience for our customers by delivering helpful, real-time information in a seamless and safe manner,” said Dr. Wolfgang Kierdorf, Executive Director of Customer Experience and Business Development at Volkswagen. “Together with 4screen, we’re creating more value from the in-car environment and supporting drivers with smart, contextual features that make everyday travel more convenient.”

Together, these partnerships mark an important step toward realizing 4screen’s mission to make every journey more connected, contextual, and valuable for both drivers and brands worldwide. With 16 OEM partnerships now live – including Stellantis and Volkswagen – 4screen continues to expand its global automotive footprint.

Turning Journeys into Brand Moments
In 2025, 4screen expanded its collaboration with leading international brands across industries, working with partners in 12 countries across Europe and North America and helping them reach millions of drivers at key decision moments throughout their journey. With context, relevance, and visibility delivered directly to the in-car screen, brands strengthened their presence in the moments that matter and achieved measurable, real-world results. Today, more than 100 brands trust 4screen, with the majority integrating our platform as a fixed part of their annual media plan. The continuously growing number of brands leveraging 4screen’s in-car marketing platform underscores our role as a trusted partner for global brands advancing their in-car strategy.
Throughout the year, we also shared several partner success stories that showcased the power of in-car marketing in action.

KFC Belgium
KFC Belgium, together with its media agency ZIGT Media, partnered with 4screen to boost restaurant visibility and brand consideration across the country. Through a nationwide in-car campaign using Branded Pins, Recommendations, and Search ads, KFC reached drivers at key decision moments, making the brand visible and relevant exactly when hunger struck.
The campaign delivered strong results: engagements increased by 28% and navigations to KFC locations rose by 34%, demonstrating the powerful impact of in-car marketing on real-world visits.

Wash by TotalEnergies
Wash by TotalEnergies partnered with 4screen to raise awareness of its premium hand-wash service in select parking areas across Île-de-France. Using Branded Pins, In-Car Search, and Recommendations, the campaign reached drivers in key decision moments, guiding them to nearby Wash locations with relevant, high-quality offers. .
The always-on approach delivered outstanding results – achieving a +87% increase in Branded Pin CTR and an +82% rise in navigations. The campaign demonstrated the long-term value of consistent in-car visibility and meaningful engagement with drivers on the move.

Wyjątkowy Prezent
Wyjątkowy Prezent, Poland’s leading experience gift provider, partnered with 4screen to boost visibility during the peak holiday season and connect with drivers at key decision moments. Using Branded Pins, Sponsored Search, and Recommendations, the campaign reached both local and international drivers in their preferred language – Polish or English – to promote nearby store locations and gift experiences.
The campaign delivered exceptional results, achieving a Branded Pin CTR 133% above the 4screen retail benchmark and a navigation rate 48% higher than the top end of the retail benchmark.

Powering the Next Phase of Measurable Mobility Media
This year, 4screen advanced how brands measure real-world impact with the introduction of Parking measurement – a breakthrough capability that connects in-car campaign exposure to physical driver behavior.

Building on existing metrics such as impressions, clicks, and navigations, this new feature adds a powerful layer of insight by capturing when and where drivers park near promoted locations. Using an A/B testing framework, 4screen accurately isolates and quantifies the incremental lift directly attributable to Branded Pin campaign exposure, offering brands a transparent and evidence-based view of real-world impact.

The test results demonstrated an average incremental lift in parking between 3% and 7%, providing marketers with a reliable proxy for store visits and establishing a new benchmark for measurable performance in mobility marketing.

Showcasing 4screen Across the Globe

Over the course of the past year, 4screen was featured at top industry events around the world, underscoring our position at the forefront of in-car marketing and driver experience innovation. In total, we attended 16 events – from large-scale exhibitions to focused industry gatherings – each offering an opportunity to exchange ideas with industry peers, connect with partners, and demonstrate how 4screen is shaping the next chapter of in-car engagement.

Among the many events we attended this year, a few stood out as key moments that defined our global presence in 2025.

The year began in Las Vegas, where 4screen showcased live in-car demos at CES, giving attendees a firsthand look at how brands can connect with drivers directly through the vehicle interface.

Soon after, 4screen pitched 4screen at the AdTech Economic Forum 2025 in London, where we were honored to receive the AdTech Charging Bull – a recognition that underscores the value of in-car marketing as an emerging channel and its growing impact in the advertising industry.

In April, the team brought the 4screen platform to the Retail Technology Show in London, one of the UK’s leading events for retail innovation and technology, where we demonstrated how in-car marketing helps brands reach consumers at key decision moments.

Later in the year, at IAA Mobility in Munich, 4screen delivered an impressive showcase featuring two show cars on-site, bringing our vision for in-car interaction to life for attendees from across the automotive industry. Watch our IAA Mobility after movie.

The end of the year brings more than festive lights and family gatherings – it marks the most dynamic shopping season of the year. As early as November, gift searches rise1 and store visits surge as people prepare for celebrations, road trips, and last-minute errands. Even with prices increasing and shoppers becoming more mindful of their spending, the holiday spirit remains strong.

Based on historical data, holiday spending continues to grow each year – a reminder that for many, this season is still a time for a bit of retail therapy, a way to lift spirits, preserve traditions, and share meaningful moments2. As people move through the festive rush, the car becomes part of that journey – guiding them from discovery to destination, connecting them with both new and familiar places.

For advertisers, it’s a moment filled with opportunity: to reach shoppers on the move and guide them directly to nearby stores, restaurants, and holiday offers at the exact time they’re ready to buy.

From Early Planning to Peak Shopping: How the Holiday Season Takes Off

Across markets, shoppers start planning and searching for Christmas gifts well before December1 – momentum that peaks with Black Friday, the first major milestone of the season when shopping activity surges and holiday lists take shape.

While discounts drive the rush, Black Friday also marks the unofficial start of the festive spending season. In fact, 61%3 of shoppers begin their holiday shopping on Black Friday, setting the tone for weeks of activity ahead.

And while e-commerce continues to grow, in-store shopping remains at the heart of the holidays, with on average 59%4 of consumers choosing to make their Christmas purchases in person. Shoppers still value the social aspect, the enjoyment of browsing, and the ability to see and try items firsthand5 – elements online shopping can’t fully match.

As the holiday rush builds, people are constantly on the move – from shopping trips to celebrations – giving brands more chances to reach them along the way.

On the Move: The In-Car Opportunity Behind Holiday Travel

As the holiday season unfolds, the car becomes central to how people move through it. Car travel dominates the year-end holidays, with on average 65%6 of people choosing to travel by car. During Christmas week, 4screen data shows a 25%7 increase in gas station searches, reflecting just how active drivers are during this period.

A notable rise in driver activity is also reflected in a 17%8 increase in in-car usage during the first three weeks of December compared to the rest of the holiday period. More drivers on the road means more people interacting with in-car displays – searching for shops, cafés, restaurants, or last-minute gifts along their route.

For brands, that translates into one of the most contextually rich environments to capture attention and drive real-world actions.

Winning the End-of-Year Festivities: How Advertisers Use 4screen

From festive greetings to last-minute offers, advertisers across industries use 4screen to make their holiday campaigns part of the journey. During the busiest weeks of the year, in-car moments become a powerful stage to stay visible, inspire purchases, and drive visits. As Christmas approaches, consumers are surrounded by a constant stream of seasonal promotions — from digital ads to outdoor billboards and in-store signage. With so many competing messages and many traditional channels already reaching high levels of ad saturation, even strong campaigns can lose visibility and impact.

4screen offers brands a unique advantage: within the in-car environment, only one campaign appears on screen at a time – a high-attention moment where drivers are actively engaged in navigation and decision-making. This exclusive placement helps your message stand out, keeping communication clear, relevant, and delivered at the right moment. No matter the industry, these examples show how brands can use 4screen to stay visible, relevant, and part of the journey during the holiday season.

Brand Presence: Supermarkets and retailers share cheerful holiday messages that keep their names top-of-mind as drivers plan and prepare for the season.

Product Spotlight: Quick-service restaurants and specialty stores showcase limited-edition menus and festive collections, turning everyday drives into moments of inspiration.

Promotions: Convenience and retail brands highlight timely offers and reminders that guide shoppers to nearby locations when it matters most.

On-the-Road Moments: Fuel and service stations celebrate the season by promoting winter essentials, coffee deals, or festive giveaways — helping drivers make every stop part of the holiday experience.

Make Your Brand Part of the Holiday Journey

The holidays are about connection – and that includes the connection between brands and shoppers on the move. Even as people shop more thoughtfully, they’re still driving, buying, and celebrating. As travel increases and consumer intent peaks, in-car marketing offers a direct route to influence choices and lead customers straight to your locations.

Marketers have long shared one goal: connecting campaign exposure to real-world action. Measuring awareness and engagement is valuable — but understanding what happens beyond impressions and interactions is where the true impact of a campaign comes to life.

In-car marketing is making that connection possible. It’s a new environment where drivers engage with brands directly through their vehicle’s interface, powered by real car data. Through 4screen, advertisers already have access to a strong foundation of transparent and measurable KPIs. Impressions show how often an ad appears on the in-car screen, clicks capture active engagement, and navigations reflect clear intent when drivers request directions to a location directly from an ad.

Together, these insights provide a comprehensive view of awareness and engagement throughout the driver journey. But the story doesn’t end there — because in a world where every interaction matters, 4screen continues to push measurement further into the lower marketing funnel, where digital engagement turns into real-world action.

How Parking Data Complements Navigation Insights

Through rigorous testing, 4screen has already shown that drivers exposed to a Branded Pin are significantly more likely to interact with the in-car screen. In fact, the A/B test showed a 77% higher click-through rate (CTR) of the ad-exposed group compared to those who were not exposed to the Branded Pin.1

Building on this insight, we’ve advanced our measurement capabilities even further. Beyond engagement metrics, 4screen can now track parking, capturing the moment when drivers physically park their vehicles near a brand location – the closest measurable step to a store visit. By connecting real time vehicle data with campaign insights and exact points of interest, we accurately match parking to specific stores or stations delivering a powerful, data-driven proxy for true store visit measurement.

In this context, it is important to distinguish between navigation and parking:

Navigations represent the volume of drivers who have clicked on the CTA ”Drive There” through the ads’ user flow.

Parking occurs when a vehicle parks within a defined radius (depending on vertical of location) of a sponsored point of interest.

While navigations are a strong signal of intent, they only capture active ad interactions — and therefore represent just a fraction of the campaign’s real impact. Not all drivers who decide to visit a location after seeing an ad will click the “Drive there” button to navigate. Some already know the route, while others might plan to visit later instead of immediately.

That’s why parking goes beyond ad interactions — capturing the real-world, post-view behavior that follows ad exposure.

Inside the Parking Data Flow and Testing Process

The process of measuring parking combines real car data with 4screen’s Driver Interaction Platform technology – all within a fully GDPR-compliant framework. Here’s how it works step by step:

Car Data Tracking

With user consent, vehicles share anonymized movement and parking data through our OEM partnerships. This data connects directly to the 4screen platform, where it’s processed for campaign management and analytics — ensuring privacy and compliance at every stage.

Pin Exposure

When a driver sees or interacts with a 4screen Branded Pin in the vehicle’s navigation system, that exposure is logged. This marks the moment the driver becomes aware of the advertiser’s location or offer.

Parking Data

If the same driver later parks within a defined radius (depends on vertical) of the promoted location and remains there for a minimum dwell time, a parking is recorded.

Parking Lift Analysis

To measure true campaign impact, 4screen applies the A/B testing method, the gold standard for proving causality:

Exposed Group (A): Drivers who see the Branded Pin

Control Group (B): Drivers who are not exposed to the ad

Both groups are otherwise identical. By comparing their parking behavior, we can determine whether exposure to the Branded Pin increases the likelihood of drivers parking near the advertiser’s point of interest. The difference – known as the incremental lift – reveals the real-world impact of the campaign.

The Tests conducted in Q3 2025 with a selection of well-known supermarket and fuel station brands in Germany and the UK showed an impressive result – an average incremental lift in parking between 3% and 7%. For context, this is in line with industry benchmarks – but is achieved through a more robust, behavior-based methodology grounded in real observed data, not modeled assumptions.

Why Parking Matter for Marketers

Parking represent the missing link between digital exposure and offline behavior. For the first time, marketers can measure not just who saw or engaged with an ad, but who actually acted on it – by physically stopping near the promoted point of interest.

This level of insight is only possible because 4screen is directly integrated into car systems through OEM partnerships. Unlike other digital platforms that rely on modeled or probabilistic data, our measurement is based on real, observed driver behavior, delivering unmatched accuracy and reliability.

Together with impressions, clicks, and navigations, parking complete 4screen’s end-to-end measurement framework for in-car marketing. Each metric represents a different stage of the customer journey – from awareness and engagement to real-world action – giving brands a holistic view of campaign performance.

By introducing this new layer of behavioral insight, 4screen is setting a new benchmark for transparency, accountability, and precision in mobility marketing, helping brands clearly connect digital visibility with physical impact.

August 2020, Munich, Germany: What began as an ambitious idea between three automotive industry experts has now grown into a globally active company – integrated in millions of cars, trusted by 15 leading automakers including Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Hyundai, and Kia, with more to come, and chosen by more than 100 advertisers such as McDonald’s, Shell, and Waitrose. This month, we celebrated five years of 4screen – and the remarkable journey that brought us here.

From Vision to Reality: The 4screen Story

4screen was born from the shared vision of Fabian Beste, Christoph Mahlert, and Simon Hecker. With years of experience in the automotive industry and deep expertise in digital product development and integration, they saw a clear gap: Despite rapid technological progress, cars still lacked seamless and dynamic interaction with their surroundings – such as local businesses and services in real time. This connection is not only essential for creating an excellent driver experience, but also forms the foundation for new, third-party business models that the automotive industry had long been searching for.

The founders set out to close this gap with a groundbreaking idea: the world’s first driver interaction platform, connecting businesses with on-the-go drivers in real time, directly through the car interface. Working in close collaboration with leading automakers, 4screen introduced a new standard for how drivers can interact with their environment safely and seamlessly on the move.

That idea is closely tied to what inspired our brand name: the fourth screen. After the television, the computer, and the smartphone, the in-car display has emerged as the next major digital touchpoint. At 4screen, we are unlocking its potential – transforming it into a dynamic channel that benefits drivers, businesses, and automakers alike.

Five years on, our mission remains unchanged: to connect a fragmented world by uniting businesses, drivers, and mobility providers.

A Journey Marked by Milestones

Our journey has been defined by ambitious milestones each year. Here’s a look at how far we’ve come in just five years.

2020/2021

4screen was founded in Munich in August 2020, with our first office opening just a few months later in December. Within the following year, we earned the trust of renowned automotive leaders, including Mathias Müller (former Volkswagen CEO), Bram Schot (former Audi CEO), and Frank Lindenberg (former Mercedes-Benz CFO), who invested early in our vision. At the same time, more than 30 brands and over 50,000 locations also joined as lead partners, laying the foundation for our platform launch.

2022

A major milestone came in July when we went live commercially in Germany with Mercedes-Benz, followed shortly after by Škoda and Audi within the same year. In October, we expanded into the UK market and began onboarding business clients – a journey that has since grown into more than 100 global brands using our platform across markets today. Our momentum that year was further highlighted by becoming a pitch finalist at SXSW in Austin, USA – a clear sign of international recognition for our vision.

2023

The year began with a major milestone: closing a €21M Series A in March, one of the largest in the industry at the time. This funding supported significant expansion into new European markets, including France, Italy, and Spain. Our automotive network also grew notably, with more car brands including Hyundai and Kia – ranked among the global top three automakers in unit sales – joining the platform.

We also increasingly established strong presences at major industry events, making our product experienceable through live in-car demos on site, for example at IAA Mobility, DMEXCO, and CES.

2024

At the beginning of the year, we marked our commercial launch in the US, expanding our platform into one of the world’s most significant markets. This was accompanied by further growth across Europe, with launches in Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Sweden. Alongside this expansion, our progress was recognized with several industry nominations and wins, including the renowned WirtschaftsWoche Best of Technology Award. We also welcomed Zeekr, part of the Geely Holding Group, as a new automotive partner, adding to our expanding portfolio.

2025

This year has already brought major milestones. We announced our global partnership with Stellantis, spanning iconic brands such as Fiat, Jeep®, and Ram – further cementing our position in the automotive industry. Moreover, in July we closed our $21M Series B funding round, ushering in the next stage of accelerated growth.

Behind every milestone in our journey lies a story of teamwork, ambition, and results. From our first automotive partnership to winning renowned awards, each achievement has brought us closer to our vision. These milestones translate into tangible scale — here are some numbers that show the impact we’ve made.

Reflections from the People Behind 4screen

Behind every achievement stand the people who made it happen. And there’s no better way to tell 4screen’s five-year story than through the reflections of those who experienced it firsthand.

“Five years ago, we walked out of the notary with an idea and a lot of uncertainty. Today, thanks to friends & family, bold teammates, trusting partners, and investors who bet on us, 4screen is tapping into one of the biggest opportunities in mobility. Couldn’t be more thankful – and we are just getting started.”

“It’s kind of crazy to look back on. I started in the beginning of 2022 when we were maybe 30 people and had not yet launched in a single OEM. To see the platform go from an idea living in a PowerPoint to becoming reality is a cool thing to see.
