Huge amount of space on the grass either side of the large looped gravel track. Insects weren’t too bad considering we were on the waters edge. Had the place to ourselves. No toilets but you can drive 2 minutes back to the other free camp near the playground.

Spectacular free camping in front of Pukaki Lake with a stunning view on the mountains. We spent 2 days enjoying doing nothing and a quick swim in the lake (I was a bit scared that would be too cold but with a sunny day in the afternoon it is worth it!). Long drop toilets always clean, sometimes a bit smelly but you can do it :) I recommend arriving around lunch time to choose your spot. Love NZ ❤️

Free camping in Hanmer is not so good re size and time limits however this site is great especially for bigger vans! A bit tricky to find as there are no signs however there is a great space behind the DOC fenced workshop (second driveway, not the one for the walking tracks). 15 min walk into town.

Large area, bit lumpy, not totally flat but still a great rest stop.

Great for a stop off for a night. The toilets were fine (1 men's, 1 women's) and a busy spot with other vans, caravans, tents and locals popping up for the sunset. A washing up sink behind the loo and a bbq area near a children's playground area.
