Cloud Computing

Director:

Higinio Mora (Main Researcher)

Description:

The Cloud computing model has contributed to the progress of the Information Society and is currently one of the fundamental technologies in the development of the digital economy and society. There are numerous areas in which Cloud systems have transformed business models and/or enabled the creation of new ones, overcoming the limitations of traditional computer systems. Cloud systems provide great advantages to companies and users related to the ubiquity of data access, resource management, and information processing.

The evolution of the Cloud Computing paradigm has led to offering computing resources as a service. The serverless service model is the next step to simplify and reduce the cost of using these resources. In addition, the federation of computing services allows cloud providers to become part of a larger entity in order to offer more and better options to meet customer service requirements. This combination enables progress in the development of interconnected clouds where cooperative working environments could grow and foster a European computing ecosystem.

The objective of this line of research focuses on advancing the generation of knowledge and the development of specialized cloud architectures to meet the computing needs of the smart manufacturing industry and artificial intelligence applications. Likewise, these infrastructures are being enriched with the incorporation of specialized computing platforms, GPUs (Graphics Processing Units), which provide great parallel processing capabilities to address the new requirements of these applications.
