{"id":165832,"date":"2026-10-02T11:24:40","date_gmt":"2026-10-02T15:24:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cloudnativenow.com\/?p=165832"},"modified":"2026-10-02T11:25:19","modified_gmt":"2026-10-02T15:25:19","slug":"microsoft-bakes-linux-container-support-directly-into-windows","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cloudnativenow.com\/features\/microsoft-bakes-linux-container-support-directly-into-windows\/","title":{"rendered":"Microsoft Bakes Linux Container Support Directly into Windows"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Linux developers relegated to working on corporate Windows machines no longer have to wrangle with Docker Desktop, file system translations or container lifecycle incompatibilities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This week, Microsoft <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.windows.com\/windowsdeveloper\/2026\/09\/29\/wsl-containers-now-generally-available\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has released<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> into general availability WSL containers, a Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) runtime for building and running containers based on the Open Container Initiative (OCI) standard.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is different from Windows Containers, introduced 10 years ago, in that the software produces and manages fully native Linux containers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The setup is ideal for building native Linux-based containers with Windows tooling. WSL runs a managed Linux environment inside Windows.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Updating WSL from the command line will bring forth these new capabilities. Or the bits <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/microsoft\/wsl\/releases\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can be downloaded<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from GitHub as well. WSLc, like WSL itself, is fully open source.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The release comes with two components. One is a command line interface (CLI) that can be launched from wslc.exe or the container.exe alias, and can be used to build, run and deploy Linux containers on Windows.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The other component is an API, which provides a way to programmatically control the containers from native Windows applications. Developers can also use the API to run cloud-based containerized applications locally.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, you can do all of this with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cloudnativenow.com\/features\/docker-offload-unblocks-docker-desktop-for-developers-in-any-environment\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Docker Desktop<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as well. But one advantage that WSLc brings is its integration with native Windows capabilities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Pairs Well With Windows<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both Microsoft Intune and Microsoft Defender for Endpoint (MDE) already support WSLc. Intune provides unified endpoint management for controlling and configuring resources, while MDE was made for securing those endpoints from threats.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Intune, which has been updated to manage WSL containers, can enable or disable WSL containers and restrict image pulls to approved registries. MDE can show process, file and network activity of running WSL containers, which then can be coordinated with other behaviors within Windows for deeper investigations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also: The Microsoft .NET Aspire cloud-native stack can run WSLc as a container runtime.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Managing Linux containers in-house also opens possibilities with integrating workflows with third-party and open source software packages. For instance, WSLc can manage dev containers for VS Code, and, within VS Code, manage the WSLc container, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/microsoft\/vscode-containers\/releases\/tag\/microsoft-vscode-container-client-v1.1.0\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">via an extension<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WSLc containers can also be managed through the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/craigloewen-msft\/lazywslc\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lazywslc<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> terminal dashboard or the\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/mhackermsft\/wslcontainerdesktop\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WSL Container Desktop Windows app<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Linux and Windows NT: Together Forever<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/commandline\/wslc-architecture-deep-dive\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">technical deep dive,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Microsoft Senior Software Engineer Pierre Boulay examined how WSLc works within the Microsoft environment, focusing on architectural benefits it brings with storage, networking and security.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Storage-wise, WSLc can create native ext4-formatted virtual hard drive (VHD) volumes that provide full Linux ext4 semantics. And with the new VirtioFS bind mounts, processes can \u201cuse a volume to share a Windows path with a container,\u201d Boulay wrote.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For networking, WSLc introduced a new networking model, Consomm\u00e9. Consomm\u00e9 gives WSLc fine control over the Linux virtual machine for activities such as port mapping and host loopback, while remaining conversant with the Windows networking stack.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the security side, container lifecycle operations \u2013 such as spawning containers, binding ports, mounting file systems \u2013 execute in user space rather than as a core system service.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Docker Not Standing Still<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While Microsoft may be encroaching on the turf of Docker Desktop, Docker has been busy as well. Last month, Docker introduced <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.docker.com\/blog\/docker-cloud-sandboxes-wearedevelopers-recap\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Docker Cloud Sandboxes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is fully integrated with Desktop.
