With an additional $4.4M worldwide this weekend, Disney‘s Zootopia has become the studio’s second $1B grosser of the year at the global box office. Judy Hopps & Co have an offshore cume of $662.8M and a domestic take of $337.22M for a total $1,000.020M. This is the 11th Disney film (out of an industry total 26) to ever hit the milestone.
Zootopia, from directors Byron Howard and Rich Moore, is the No. 1 animated film of the year and the No. 2 movie of 2016. It falls in line behind the Mouse (& Marvel’s) Captain America: Civil War which recently hit the mark and is currently at $1,131.54M global. The numbers also make it only the 4th animated film ever to to cross $1B. Frozen, Minions and Toy Story 3 are ahead of it.
The top market cumes on the charmer are: China $235.6M, Japan $56.2M, Germany $33.4M, the UK $33.4M and Russia $32.2M.

This weekend, its 17th in overseas release, added an estimated $3.6M. Japan continues to be the major driver with another $3.2M this session for a dip of just 18%.
While Alice Through The Looking Glass won’t follow in its predecessors’ footsteps to the $1B global mark, Disney has lots to smile about. It boasts the Top 3 movies of 2016 worldwide, with The Jungle Book at No. 3 since last weekend. That film has a little over $100M to go to score a hat trick for the Mouse in the 2016 $1B club. It’s currently at an $895.07M global cume with both Korea (next week) and Japan (August 11) on deck.
Finally saw Zootopia at my local independant theater this past week. It was double feature night where the library sponsored Peanuts 2015 for free. About 15 (incl my family of 5) showed up for Zoo, & a packed house for Peanuts. The audience response was just a few laughs for Zoo. The audience response for Peanuts was non-stop laughter of all ages. Kids got out of their seats to emulate snoopy’s dancing. I gave Zoo a 6/10, & Peanuts 9/10. There’s nothing I would’ve changed for Peanuts & a lot I would’ve changed for Zoo.
So why did Zoo do near 3x Peanuts at the BO? Disney brand strength, better scheduling, & ripping off Fantastic Mr Fox. Not just the design but also the voice. As similar as it gets. As mysteries go, Hoodwinked beats Zoo hands down in both story & more entertaining characters.
When I saw Zootopia teaser I was like this movie is beautiful so well done so colorful really detailed & it deserved to have a 98% rotten tomatoes. Also I was totally waiting for it to hit 1 billion, this movie is on track to winning multiple awards. Zootopia competitors in animated feature are

The Jungle Book probably stands a decent chance of cracking 1 billion as well, given Korea and Japan are still to come. Eyeing the rest of the year, The BFG could stand a good chance, as does Finding Dory, and despite the production debacle they’re probably pinning their hopes on Star Wars reaching it. Moana looks good, and Dr Strange will probably get solid returns.
The BFG won’t hit a billion, even if it’s a masterpiece. Too many family films will have come before it in the summer, and Finding Dory especially will leave little box office breathing room in its wake. I’m guessing $500M to $700M worldwide, with North America contributing $160M to $220M of that. Doctor Strange, if it’s good, will probably perform in line with Ant Man. Moana–I have no idea. The scheduling is perfect and I could see it hitting $750M to $850M. A billion would be shocking, in my opinion, but Zootopia came out of nowhere to do it so who knows?
Rogue One really ought to hit a billion if it’s simply a half decent action adventure. It will have minimal competition, and it only has to get about half the butts in seats as the last film, which was (surprisingly to me) incredibly well regarded. If it’s actually very good, it could top Civil War as Disney’s biggest grosser. Heck, even Finding Dory could do that.
I’m still trying to wrap my head around the notion of a studio having five billion dollar flicks in a single year, possibly six. Disney’s investments are really bearing fruit now.

WAY TO GO DISNEY!! First Captain America:Civil War (duh no brainer) and now Disney’s Zootoopia also crossing the billion $$$$ at the worldwide B.O.,damn that IS world domination!!! Now let’s see if they can make three for summer 16 with The Jungle Book. DO IT!!!
