North Carolina Governor. Obtaining a law degree, he established a successful legal career and was the assistant attorney for the Crown in the North Carolina Wilmington district. A supporter of independence, he served as Lieutenant and paymaster of the First North Carolina Continental Regiment and served in the Provincial Congress, (1775-78). He was a member of the North Carolina Senate, Captain of the First Troop of North Carolina Continental Dragoon Regiment, (1777-79) and presiding justice of the North Carolina Superior Court, (1777-95). In 1795, he was elected as a North Carolina the ninth Governor of North Carolina, serving until 1798. While in office, a court reform measures were promoted and a land grant controversy in the comptroller's office was dealt with. After his term, he served as a member of the Electoral College, in 1804 and was trustee president for the University of North Carolina.
