Total download counts for a module are different than the version history download counts #350

Description

Prerequisites

  • Write a descriptive title.
  • Make sure you are able to repro it on the latest version
  • Search the existing issues.

Steps to reproduce

I work on a module called ScubaGear which is published on PSGallery and the "total downloads" count shown on the left side of the page is incorrect.

Image

It's currently showing the total as 162,956 (and has been stuck at that number for a couple weeks since 6/29) but it should be 163,350. I cross referenced from another repository just to sanity check and seems this applies to other PSGallery modules as well. For example, NuGet is showing the total as 10,896,299 but it when adding up the version history download counts it should be 11,058,916.

We've been tracking #347 as a similar issue, but that issue is for the version history download counts and seems to be resolved.

Expected behavior

I expect the total download count to match what's shown in the version history.

Actual behavior

There's a disconnect between the total and the version history download counts.

    Same problem here: I have packages that still show a total of zero downloads, even though each version shows a positive count.

    This is still not working, is wrong , can you please look into it !!

    PnP.PowerShell numbers haven't been updated in months. The nightly downloads seem to be ok but the overall count is incorrect.

    I am also having the same problem for CopyGitHubRepo

    alerickson Sydney Smith (@SydneyhSmith) Hey all, this issue has been open for a couple months now. I personally consider it a low priority, as we've been manually adding the version history download counts instead of the total download count (for the purpose of metrics we report up to our organization's leadership). With that said, a few others are reporting the same issue now which I believe warrants an increase in priority to get this addressed. Do you have a general estimate of when we could expect a fix?

    @msw1nkels

    Same problem for MSCKite.Azure.Platform. The package-wide total is 0 on every version, while the per-version counts are populated.

    Via the V2 API (FindPackagesById()?id='MSCKite.Azure.Platform', checked 2026-10-11):

    • DownloadCount is 0 for all 12 versions.
    • VersionDownloadCount is populated per version (4, 5, 9, 88, 10, 27, 41, 15, 18, 78, 4, 73), which sums to 372.

    Other packages are fine: Pester and PSScriptAnalyzer return a non-zero DownloadCount. So it looks like the package-registration total is not being aggregated for some packages, not a problem with the manifest or the publish step (the package is published with Publish-Module, stable and prerelease versions).

    This breaks the Shields powershellgallery/dt badge, which reads DownloadCount and shows 0. As a workaround we sum VersionDownloadCount ourselves and serve it as a Shields endpoint.
