   Interesting. It's not the language markers on the code blocks (we've got 35 of those) and it's not the indentation (all but one of them are indented). It's not even about having an empty line between the code block and the preceding text (most of the code blocks have one, but many work without it).

   FWIW, it's reproducible with pandoc -o NEWS.html NEWS.md. Will experiment some more.
