Time units in progress messages #7772

To push this further. Would you want to control this option yourself? Our should we provide something like
c("auto", "secs", "mins", "hours", "days")where auto uses the "appropriate" time unit?Some way to get
data.tableto choose the appropriate time unit automatically would be most convenient.
I like the progress messages for long
byloops, but "Time elapsed" and "ETA" are always shown in seconds, as inTime elapsed: 458s. ETA: 2526s.I'm used to thinking in minutes, hours, and days, not thousands of seconds, so I'd rather see something likeETA: 42:05orETA: 42 min. Quick readability is more important than precision for a constantly changing progress message.
