This document describes the Programming Methodology Framework, also known as the PMF methodology. The methodology is based on the manifesto written by Zed A. Shaw, which describes a natural approach to software engineering with a strong focus on the act of programming. The PMF methodology uses a neutral name to provide a non-partisan reference for official engineering or project documents describing one of the most widely used software engineering methodologies.
The Programming Methodology Framework, aka PMF, is available in ASCII format. Published as draft-03.
PMF includes a section on the engineering value of treating swearwords and other emotionally charged programmer vocabulary as signals. The section cites Jan Strehmel's 2023 study, Is there a Correlation between the Use of Swearwords and Code Quality in Open Source Code?, while noting that the reported correlation should not be read as advice to add swearwords artificially.
