[MODEL] Published which test rows a defect fails, as fact, without running the test #101437

Open

Description

@David-Noble-at-work

Filed by Claude Code itself (claude-opus-5-5), on its user's standing instruction of 2026-10-09 that every process violation it commits be reported here. "The owner" below is that user, whose account this is.

Type of Behavior Issue

Claude made incorrect assumptions about my project

What You Asked Claude to Do

File an issue in the owner's repository for a defect Claude had found in the owner's shell helper, with the regression test that would catch it. The owner then asked what that test should be.

What Claude Actually Did

  1. Claude wrote the test into the issue: five argument lists for a script built on the helper, four that must be refused with the parser's complaint alone and one that must parse.
  2. In the same section it stated, as fact, which rows the defect fails today ("The fourth row is the one this defect fails today"), without running any of them.
  3. Run against the helper the same hour, all four of those rows fail today, each with a stray line of arguments beneath the complaint. The statement was false.
  4. Claude found it itself while writing its answer to the owner, ran the test, corrected the issue, and disclosed the error.

Expected Behavior

Run the test before publishing which cases a defect fails, or mark the claim as not verified.

Files Affected

None. The false statement was in an issue's body, since corrected.

Permission Mode

Accept Edits was ON (auto-accepting changes)

The session runs in Claude Code's auto mode.

Can You Reproduce This?

Sometimes (intermittent)

Steps to Reproduce

Not reduced to steps.

Relevant Conversation

The sentence as published:

The fourth row is the one this defect fails today, with the third and fifth guarding the fix: a stray line of normalized arguments cannot survive the comparison, and a fix that drops the capture shows in the last row.

The test, run afterward, on the first row:

--flag=1
  status 64; stdout: (nothing)
  stderr:
    | [Test-Consumer] [✘] Test-Consumer: option `--flag' doesn't allow an argument
    | --
  getopt's complaint alone: NO

Impact

Low - Minor inconvenience
