Add support for CompoundModel derivative computation through function composition #17250
Description
This is a reminder of a left-over suggestion that was made in #17034, but goes out of scope, so it doesn't get lost and the initial PR can be merged.
we should look into supporting the computation through function composition. This should be doable as that is just chain rule.
