The first ABI-stable pre-release (CPython 3.14.0rc1) is available through GitHub Actions. The current scheduled date is Tuesday, 2025-07-22. See PEP 745
update: depending on what path we take for astropy 7.2 (#18336 or #18420), adding support within the 7.1 series might require further steps specifically on the backport branch, because #18420 isn't meant to be backported.
quick note: with #18458 being merged, we are currently building and testing cp314 wheels on the backport branch, however we are not yet using the guaranteed ABI-stable 3.14.0rc1 pre-release to do so, so we need updates for cibuildwheel (via OpenAstronomy/github-actions-workflows) before we release. I see no reason to expect this to be a long-standing blocker, but just in case it turns into one, we can simply revert #18458

Note: if we somehow manage to close #18163 first, this one can be closed for free.

Is OpenAstronomy aware of this? Thanks for the update!

Yes. I linked my PR in the OP.

I lost track of exactly when this was done, but it is now.
