feat(assurance): check SBOM interoperability before a tag, not after a release - #495
Conversation
…a release v0.28.0 shipped a merged SPDX export that the official SPDX validator rejects. The check that found it ran after publication, so it could only report on a release that was already public. The same job had also been failing on its weekly schedule for three weeks, and a failed scheduled run notifies no one. Nothing about the check needs a published release; it needs a built binary. It was placed after publication on the reasoning that it should test what users download, but the published archive is built from the same commit and its files are verified separately. So it moves to where a failure is still cheap: - The release prerequisites stage calls it, built from the commit about to be tagged. A document a validator rejects now stops Auto Version from tagging. - It runs on pull requests that touch what decides SBOM output: the pinned SDK, which owns the codec, the SBOM detector, the command and output code, the fixtures, and the check itself. That is the earliest point, and it is where a change of SDK version would have been caught. The post-release copy and the weekly schedule are removed, and with them the path that downloaded a released binary. A check nobody is told about is not a check, and running the same validators again after publication adds nothing the earlier run did not establish. The developer guide and AGENTS.md now state the rule this got wrong: a check belongs in the earliest stage that has what it needs. This pull request's own run of the check is expected to fail until the SDK release that fixes the export is pinned here; that bump is added to this branch when the tag exists. … SHA1 v0.14.7 records a source document's checksum as SHA-1 and has the SPDX exporter refuse any other algorithm in externalDocumentRefs (bomly-sdk#108). That is the fix for the merged SPDX export the official validator rejected in v0.28.0, and the reason this branch's own "Validate generated SBOMs" check was failing. Built against the new pin, a document merged from two sources passes the official validator (spdx/tools-java 2.0.7): "This SPDX Document is valid." The scan record of an ingested SBOM now reports the document checksum as sha1 where it reported sha256, so the SBOM smoke goldens change; they are regenerated separately by Update Smoke Goldens. Update Smoke Goldens, run on this branch, regenerated the four SBOM goldens for bomly-sdk v0.14.7. The only change is the document checksum the scan record reports for an ingested SBOM: sha1 where it was sha256, with the matching values. Eight lines in four files. The post-release assessment no longer runs the official SPDX and CycloneDX validators. It runs the SBOM released-binary scan slice. Update this checklist item to distinguish that scan from the pre-tag interoperability check.

…fter publication The release checklist still listed SBOM validation among the post-release assessment's steps. That check moved to the prerequisites stage; the assessment only scans an SBOM input with the released binary. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <[email protected]>
v0.28.0 shipped a merged SPDX export that the official SPDX validator rejects (#493). The check that found it ran after publication, so it could only report on a release that was already public. The same job had also been failing on its weekly schedule since 14 September; a failed scheduled run notifies no one.
This PR moves the check to where a failure is still cheap, and pins the SDK release that fixes the export.
Why it was in the wrong place
Nothing about the check needs a published release. It needs a built binary. I placed it post-release on the reasoning that it should test what users download — but the published archive is built from the same commit, and its files are verified separately.
What changes
go.mod/go.sum(the SDK owns the codec), the SBOM detector,internal/cli,internal/output, the fixtures, and the check itself.sbom-interoperabilitymoves frompost-releasetoprerequisites.AGENTS.mdnow state the rule this got wrong — a check belongs in the earliest stage that has what it needs.bomly-sdkv0.14.6 → v0.14.7 (fix(sbom): a source document's checksum is SHA-1, as SPDX requires bomly-sdk#108), which records a source document's checksum as SHA-1 and has the SPDX exporter refuse any other algorithm inexternalDocumentRefs.sha1where it reportedsha256. The new values equalshasum -a 1of the two fixtures. The check proved itself on this PR
validator java failed with exit 1So the new pull-request trigger catches the defect, and the SDK release fixes it.
Verified
make verifyandactionlintpass; the catalog validates. Not yet exercised: the check running inside the prerequisites stage, which happens on the next Auto Version run.
One cost to know about: the prerequisites stage gains a job that downloads the validators, so a network failure there can hold up a tag until it is re-run.
User-visible change
For an ingested SBOM,
bomly scan --format jsonreports the source document's checksum with"algorithm": "sha1"instead of"sha256". Merged CycloneDX exports carrySHA-1on their source links for the same reason. Both are conforming; SPDX 2.3 permits only SHA1 in that position.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
