test(wire): pin the v1 plugin wire's lenient decode - #56
Conversation
ADR-0039 moves untrusted-document parsing to encoding/json/v2, whose defaults reject duplicate object names and invalid UTF-8. That posture is right for an SBOM a stranger produced and wrong for this wire: enabled plugins are trusted native processes the user launched, so the contract here is frozen fixtures and strict additivity. Two fixtures pin it -- a payload repeating a member name, and one carrying invalid UTF-8 -- both of which strict decoding rejects and v1 accepts. Checked that they discriminate rather than assuming it. The hazard is drift, not intent: nobody sets out to tighten the plugin wire, but a decoder swapped because it was the one already in hand does it silently, and a plugin built last year stops loading. …ncoding/json Codex was right that the guard did not guard. Every plugin request and response is decoded by unmarshalBytes in serve.go; the fixtures called encoding/json.Unmarshal directly, so a migration touching only that helper would have left this file green while real plugin traffic started rejecting the payloads. They now go through unmarshalPayload from a BytesValue envelope, into the DetectionResult a detector plugin returns. Migrating unmarshalBytes to json/v2 now fails both subtests; before, it failed neither. Both reviewers also asked for distinct duplicate values, since equal ones prove only acceptance. Correct, but the field they proposed does not work: a node's version is backfilled from its canonical package URL (ADR-0041), so a duplicated "version" member never reaches the decoded node -- a payload saying 9.9.9 beside a purl saying 1.3.0 decodes to 1.3.0, and the assertion would hold however duplicates resolved. Found by mutation check, not by reading. The fixture duplicates copyright instead, which is free text with no other source, and swapping the two values now fails the test. Part of phase 2.6 of the SDK maturity plan (the CLI half is bomly-cli#431, opened alongside this).
ADR-0039 moves untrusted-document parsing to
encoding/json/v2, whose defaults reject duplicate object names and invalid UTF-8. That posture is right for an SBOM a stranger produced. It is the wrong posture for the plugin wire: enabled plugins are trusted native processes the user launched, sobomly.plugin.v1's contract is frozen fixtures and strict additivity, and tightening decoding is a protocol decision that needs its own ADR — not a side effect of a parser migration in a consumer. Two fixtures pin the current behavior: a payload repeating a member name, and one carrying invalid UTF-8. Both must keep decoding.
The fixtures discriminate. I checked rather than assumed — under strict decoding both are rejected, with
duplicate object member name "version" within "/nodes/0"andinvalid UTF-8 within "/nodes/0/copyright" after offset 122. A fixture that passed either way would guard nothing. The invalid-UTF-8 case asserts the U+FFFD substitution explicitly, so a change to that behavior is visible rather than silent.
Why a guard at all: the hazard is drift, not intent. Nobody sets out to tighten the plugin wire; someone swaps a decoder because it is the one they just used elsewhere, and a plugin built last year stops loading. One deliberate exception already exists and is pinned separately by
TestWireV1StrictDependencyIdentity— a dependency payload whose identity cannot mint a well-formed package URL fails decode (ADR-0041). That tightening was ruled and fixture-backed, which is exactly why the accidental kind needs its own guard rather than being assumed absent.Tests only; no production code changes.
