Summary

  • enforce the canonical agent name grammar ^[a-z][a-z0-9_-]*$ in backend parsing and creation
  • show an inline validation error in the create-agent dialog and prevent invalid requests
  • add backend, API, frontend, and Storybook coverage
  • document the naming rule in the public docs, official skill reference, glossary, and QA scenario

Why

Agent definitions previously accepted names containing spaces, while network peer IDs derived from those names reject spaces. That mismatch allowed an invalid agent to be created and caused network creation to fail later.

User impact

Invalid names such as audio designer now remain visible with an actionable error, while Create stays disabled and no request is sent. Canonical names such as audio-designer continue to work and can participate in networks.

Validation

  • make gate-full
  • 21,629 Go tests passed; 2 expected skips
  • frontend lint, typecheck, tests, and production build passed
  • Go formatting, lint, build, and package-boundary checks passed
  • manual QA confirmed invalid-name rejection, valid agent creation, and successful network creation with six agents

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added consistent agent-name validation across creation, sessions, workspaces, automation, settings, and API requests.
    • Agent names must begin with a lowercase letter and contain only lowercase letters, numbers, hyphens, or underscores, up to 106 characters.
    • Added validation for network peer identifiers with a maximum length of 128 characters.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Prevented invalid agent names and workspace defaults from being submitted or persisted.
    • Invalid automation references now return clear validation errors before changes are saved.
    • Authored names remain visible while invalid entries display feedback.
  • Tests

    • Expanded coverage across agent, automation, workspace, API, and network validation scenarios.

Review Change Stack

Walkthrough

Agent and peer identifiers now use centralized lowercase grammar and length contracts. Backend mutation paths, API schemas, automation, workspace validation, sessions, and frontend agent flows reject invalid values before persistence or network side effects.

Changes

Canonical identifier validation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Agent-name validation contracts
internal/config/agent_name.go, internal/config/automation_agent_target.go, internal/config/bootstrap.go, internal/config/roles.go, internal/config/agent_name_test.go
The config package defines canonical and authored agent-name validation. Parsing, defaults, roles, and automation targets use the shared contract.
Mutation-boundary validation
internal/automation/*, internal/api/core/*, internal/workspace/*
Automation, API, and workspace mutation paths reject invalid agent references before persistence. Workspace validation errors map to HTTP 400 responses.
API and tool schema contracts
internal/api/spec/*, internal/tools/builtin/*
OpenAPI and built-in tool schemas use shared required and optional agent-name patterns and maximum lengths.
Peer identity and session validation
internal/network/*, internal/session/*
Peer-ID validation is centralized in the identifier package. Live session paths validate derived IDs before driver startup, registration, or network joining.
Frontend agent-name validation
web/src/systems/agent/lib/*, web/src/systems/agent/components/__tests__/*
Agent creation and duplication reject noncanonical names. The dialog displays the format error and prevents submission.

Estimated code review effort: 4 (Complex) | ~60 minutes

Mergeability Score: 🟡 Moderate · up to de711

Some backend and automation paths still accept agent names containing surrounding or only whitespace, allowing invalid definitions to be saved or transformed and fail later during network creation. Merge should wait until every creation and configuration path validates the original name against the documented grammar.

Reject whitespace-only agent names.

A value such as " " bypasses validation because these paths use strings.TrimSpace(...) == "". Dynamic automation paths can then persist a noncanonical agent name. Resource paths silently change the same invalid input to an empty value. This conflicts with the required agent-name grammar and can defer failure until a later network operation.

  • internal/automation/agent_name_validation.go#L12-L14: Accept only the literal empty string as an omitted optional agent. Validate whitespace-only values.
  • internal/config/config_validation.go#L268-L271: Treat only "" as an unset default. Reject whitespace-only configured values.
  • internal/config/roles.go#L221-L225: Treat only "" as an unset optional role agent. Reject whitespace-only configured values.
  • internal/automation/resource.go#L67-L69: Validate the original AgentName before normalization, or stop trimming AgentName during normalization.
  • internal/automation/resource.go#L89-L91: Validate the original AgentName before normalization, or stop trimming AgentName during normalization.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Validate the supplied name before trimming it.

" audio-designer " passes validation because Lines 32 and 38 remove its spaces before ValidateAgentName runs. The resolver then accepts a name that does not match the canonical grammar.

Validate the original non-empty value. Return it only after validation succeeds. Apply this to both the explicit name and defaults.Agent.
