What & why

Fixes #416.

Loop-owned Goal sessions now retain the trusted session provenance that started the current or nearest ancestor Loop Run. This lets session catalogs and the Web group Goal work below its originating session without turning the Goal into a spawned session or granting spawn governance.

The implementation keeps the relationship informational:

  • Goal sessions remain type=system, with no inherited TTL, auto-stop, spawn budget, or permission narrowing.
  • Provenance is derived server-side, constrained to the same workspace, and resolved only for Goal actions.
  • Spawn limits count only contiguous type=spawned ancestry. A new child rebases below a live Goal when its historical visual root has been deleted.
  • Memory, tool-policy, hook, and reaper behavior classify sessions by type, not by the presence of a parent ID.
  • Session list and inspector copy use neutral child/lineage language.

Release note

🐛 Bug Fixes

  • Loop-owned Goal sessions stay grouped under their originating session without inheriting spawned-session governance.

How you verified it

  • make gate-full passed locally; make gate-status reports full PASS CURRENT for fingerprint 3eccd4639a86f98c76bbbdbe5c97a99d7119f1ae.
  • The full gate covered 22,571 Go tests under race with 3 expected skips, 5,088 Web tests, typecheck, lint, code generation, builds, and package boundaries.
  • Focused unit and integration coverage exercises provenance precedence, missing/cyclic/cross-workspace ancestors, idempotent Goal reuse, deleted origins, type-based policies, contiguous spawn governance, and Web hierarchy projection.
  • A fresh isolated provider-backed QA walk invoked hosted compozy__loop_run, observed the system Goal through CLI/HTTP/UDS, removed the origin, and successfully spawned a governed child rebased below the live Goal. Teardown completed with clean: true and no survivors. See docs/qa/reports/2026-08-16-loop-goal-origin-session-lineage.md.
  • Visual browser verification remains explicitly blocked-verify because the isolated bootstrap had no browser driver; no visual-pass claim is made.
  • Claude Fable 5 performed a separate read-only review of the complete diff and found no Critical or Important issues. Its three QA-documentation findings were corrected before the final gate.

Impact

  • CLI / HTTP / UDS: no command, route, schema, or ToolID changes. Existing session lineage fields now carry server-derived provenance for run-owned Goal sessions; structured HTTP and UDS projections were verified for parity.
  • Web: existing session threads can now group system Goal sessions below a loaded origin. Copy is neutral and does not imply safe-spawn authority.
  • Configuration / storage: no config key, migration, or persisted schema change.
  • Documentation: session lifecycle, safe-spawn semantics, the official Compozy skill, and living QA trackers were updated.

Compozy Impact Audit

  • Native tools: no ToolID, toolset, descriptor, schema digest, risk flag, or capability-gate change. The existing compozy__loop_run and session catalog surfaces were exercised without contract changes.
  • Extensibility and hooks: no extension format, registry, bridge SDK, MCP sidecar, capability, or config-lifecycle change. Session hooks continue to expose lineage, while spawn-only behavior is selected by Session.Type.
  • Workspace data isolation: provenance is session-scoped and accepted only when the parent and Loop ancestry remain in the exact workspace. CLI/HTTP/UDS catalog reads and runtime tests cover workspace propagation and cross-workspace rejection.
  • Official Compozy skill: skills/compozy/references/runtime-operations.md now distinguishes visual provenance from governed spawned-session lineage.

  • make gate passes locally (make gate-full before review on larger changes)
  • New or changed behavior is covered by tests, or I explained above why not
  • If an agent wrote or co-wrote this, I named it above and verified the result myself

The implementation was authored with OpenAI Codex and independently reviewed by Claude Fable 5. The automated and structured runtime results are verified above; the operator visual browser walk remains outstanding and is not claimed.

Summary by CodeRabbit

Walkthrough

Loop Goal actions now derive and propagate trusted provenance session IDs. Session management records internal system provenance, separates it from spawn governance, validates session types and ancestry, and preserves lineage after parent deletion. Daemon and Web handling classify and display these relationships consistently.

Changes

Session provenance flow

Layer / File(s) Summary
Resolve and propagate loop provenance
internal/loop/action_types.go, internal/loop/coordinator_*.go, internal/loop/goal/executor.go, internal/loop/service*.go
Goal actions resolve validated ancestor session IDs and pass them through execution and session binding requests.
Normalize internal system provenance
internal/session/manager_*.go, internal/session/manager_delete_test.go
System sessions record provenance parent, root, and depth metadata. Validation enforces session type, lineage exclusivity, and workspace ownership. Missing parents remain non-fatal.
Enforce session types and start lifecycle
internal/session/manager.go, internal/session/manager_hooks*.go, internal/session/manager_start_*.go
Daemon-owned session types remain immutable through hooks. Start reservations and spawned-lineage revalidation manage lifecycle state and cleanup.
Resolve spawn governance from session types
internal/session/spawn*.go
Spawn depth, roots, and child caps use contiguous spawned-session ancestry. Provenance-only system sessions do not consume spawned-session caps.
Apply provenance in daemon session handling
internal/daemon/*.go
Daemon bindings preserve provenance. Memory callers, tool policies, reaper records, and integration tests distinguish system sessions from spawned sessions.
Classify and render session hierarchy
internal/session/manager_hooks_events*.go, web/src/systems/session/...
Persisted events classify actors by session type. Web fixtures and labels represent nested sessions as child sessions and expose lineage depth.

Add a case for incomplete run identity.

Separate the identity mismatch from the workspace mismatch.

The condition merges two distinct faults. A store that returns a run with a different ID produces the message "parent loop run is outside the target workspace", which misdirects diagnosis. The two sibling branches in the same loop return a ReasonError with a code (ReasonCodeAncestryDepthExceeded, ReasonCodeAncestryCycle); this branch returns a bare wrapped error, so callers that switch on ReasonError.Code receive no code for a cross-workspace rejection.

♻️ Proposed split

If the reason-code surface must stay stable, keep the plain errors and disregard the code suggestion.

internal/session/spawn.go (1)

340-357: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Resolve spawn governance once per spawn.

spawnLineage resolves governance through m.spawnGovernanceForParent, which issues one Status call per ancestor. validateSpawnCaps then resolves the same parent again from the ListAll snapshot. The duplicate work costs extra lookups, and the two data sources can produce a different depth or root for the same parent, so the cap decision and the persisted lineage can be based on different views. Resolve governance once and pass the result into validateSpawnCaps.

♻️ Proposed signature change
-	if err := m.validateSpawnCaps(ctx, parent, budget, targetWorkspaceID); err != nil {
+	if err := m.validateSpawnCaps(ctx, parent, governance, budget, targetWorkspaceID); err != nil {
 		return nil, err

 func (m *Manager) validateSpawnCaps(
 	ctx context.Context,
 	parent *Info,
+	governance spawnGovernance,
 	budget store.SessionSpawnBudget,
 	targetWorkspaceID string,
 ) error {

Then delete the second resolveSpawnGovernance(parent, lookup) call and keep the map-based lookup only for candidate resolution. Update the direct call in spawn_test.go at lines 999-1006.

Assert the rejection reason, not only ErrValidation.

These three subtests check only errors.Is(err, ErrValidation). Each rule under test shares that sentinel with unrelated lineage rules, so a subtest can pass for the wrong reason. Add a message substring assertion for each rule, as the earlier subtests in this file already do at lines 407-409 and 429.

♻️ Proposed assertion tightening
 		if !errors.Is(err, ErrValidation) {
 			t.Fatalf("Create(user with internal provenance) error = %v, want %v", err, ErrValidation)
 		}
+		if !strings.Contains(err.Error(), "system") {
+			t.Fatalf("Create(user with internal provenance) error = %v, want session-type rule", err)
+		}

Apply the same pattern to the "simultaneous public and internal lineage" and cross-workspace subtests, using the exact substrings produced by prepareInternalSystemProvenance.

As per path instructions: "MUST have specific error assertions (ErrorContains, ErrorAs)".

Review remediation is in 49601716.

In addition to the inline fixes, this covers the four review-body suggestions: incomplete run-identity cases, separate ancestry identity/workspace diagnostics without expanding the public reason-code surface, one governance snapshot per spawn, and distinguishing assertions for all provenance rejections.

Verification:

  • full internal/daemon, internal/session, and internal/loop suites
  • focused affected coverage under -race
  • Loop Goal managed-runtime integration normally and under -race
  • scoped Go lint: 0 issues
  • make gate-full: PASS, 22,578 tests / 3 expected skips
  • make gate-status: full PASS CURRENT, fingerprint fcf56a1bdb48de9430c69e4b1bcae7ec427c1b35

The integration subtest remains serial because its canonical fixture uses t.Setenv; Go rejects t.Parallel for that fixture. Session policy narrowing is skipped for system/user provenance while the existing coordinator policy contract remains enforced.
