What & why

This PR resolves five confirmed Loop DSL/runtime defects found while authoring and running real graphs after PR #427. Together, the changes make history references total, enforce a single output-settlement authority, execute fan-out predicates at the correct stage, make runtime-typed inputs operational, and carry runtime speed through every public surface.

The implementation fixes root causes rather than adding compatibility paths. Public contracts, generated types, configuration, Web controls, documentation, the official Compozy skill, canonical tests, and QA trackers move together.

1. Total history references and safe coordinator behavior

  • Defines the complete shape of previous.* and generation history namespaces before template evaluation.
  • Allows documented guarded references to validate without making generation 1 crash on absent prior values.
  • Keeps template and materialization failures inside the node lifecycle instead of escalating them into an opaque coordinator failure.
  • Adds topology-aware history construction and canonical compiler, linter, namespace, coordinator, and control-flow coverage.
  • Adds terminal hierarchy settlement so completed or failed Loop runs cannot leave live descendant tasks behind.

2. Daemon-owned output settlement

  • Establishes the daemon as the sole terminal authority for managed Loop workers.
  • Worker sessions may heartbeat while leased, but cannot call complete/fail to race the daemon's validated action result.
  • Requires schema-valid structured output before a generation can settle as succeeded; invalid capture terminates as invalid_output.
  • Preserves the exact validated object through inline and content-addressed storage, including downstream template and CEL hydration.
  • Adds session-lineage denials, lease authority, action-result validation, output persistence, and public runtime coverage.

3. Executable fan-out filters

  • Evaluates each filter against the raw candidate before batching and max_fan_out limits.
  • Exposes the candidate item, original index, the fan-out alias, and outer fan-out aliases during compilation and evaluation.
  • Preserves original order and candidate indexes after filtering.
  • Treats zero matches as a valid zero-branch materialization.
  • Routes predicate failures through the existing on_eval_error policy instead of silently ignoring the filter.

4. Typed runtime input binding

  • Allows params.runtime to consume a declared type: runtime input through an exact direct reference such as {{ .inputs.worker_runtime }}.
  • Defers provider/model/reasoning validation for direct references to bind time while retaining compile-time typo detection for literal runtime objects.
  • Places input-owned runtime selection in the documented resolution order and records input provenance.
  • Supports CLI compact runtime values and structured HTTP/UDS/native-tool payloads consistently.
  • Keeps the Web run form and read-only runtime inspector aligned with daemon truth.

5. Runtime speed parity

  • Adds runtime speed to Loop input, per-node runtime, defaults, resolved provenance, CLI/API/UDS/native-tool contracts, and Web controls.
  • Reuses the existing runtime selector's Fast control rather than creating a parallel UI concept.
  • Propagates speed into session creation and bumps the creation-profile contract to v3 as a greenfield hard cut.
  • Reports applied and unsupported speed outcomes without inventing provider support.

QA-discovered terminal cleanup fix

Provider-backed QA exposed a failure path where a terminal coordinator could leave a next-generation source task in ready without an associated task run. The final transaction now drains every open descendant, including ready-only tasks and needs_attention runs, both during normal terminal settlement and coordinator execution failure. The public reproduction now ends with zero open tasks.

Contracts and documentation

  • Updates the Loop OpenAPI contract and regenerated TypeScript declarations.
  • Updates existing native Loop tool descriptors and runtime payloads without adding new tool IDs.
  • Updates config.toml Loop runtime defaults, CLI parsing, daemon adapters, and session creation profiles.
  • Updates the Loop DSL, configuration, running guides, reference grammar, and skills/compozy/references/loops.md.
  • Adds and settles durable QA scenarios for history safety, filtering, output ownership, runtime validation, typed runtime selection, and provenance.

Release notes

Features

  • Runtime-typed Loop inputs now control the provider, model, reasoning level, and speed used by worker nodes.
  • Loop runtime speed is visible and consistent across CLI, HTTP, UDS, native tools, SSE, and Web inspection.

Fixes

  • Guarded previous.* references no longer crash first-generation execution.
  • Fan-out filters now actually select candidates before batching and branch limits.
  • Managed workers can no longer race daemon-owned validated output settlement.
  • Large validated outputs round-trip through content-addressed storage without losing required fields.
  • Terminal and failed coordinators no longer leave runnable descendant tasks behind.

How you verified it

Automated checks

  • Canonical Loop linter, compiler, history namespace, coordinator lifecycle, action output, fan-out, runtime resolver, CLI, daemon integration, API contract, session creation, and Web suites were extended in their owning layers.
  • Focused race-enabled regression run passed: go test -race ./internal/task ./internal/store/globaldb -run 'TestGlobalDBTaskRunLeaseSettlementShouldPublishCommittedSequence|TestGlobalDBCompleteCoordinatorAndEnqueueNextShouldCreateNodeTasksDependenciesAndRuns' -count=1 — 7 tests across 2 packages.
  • Scoped strict Go lint passed for ./internal/store/globaldb and ./internal/task after the QA-discovered cleanup fix.
  • An earlier full diff-classified make gate passed before the QA-discovered descendant-drain follow-up. The final repository gates are intentionally delegated to CI for this PR.

Real-scenario QA

Four isolated sessions covered three personas and the public CLI, HTTP, UDS, native-tool, SSE, Web, runtime/provider, persistence, restart, and workspace-boundary surfaces.

  • Runtime input validation rejected missing, mixed, invalid-speed, and unknown-provider values before persistence or ACP spawn.
  • A typed Codex runtime completed a real provider-backed run and reported the same provider/model/reasoning/speed provenance across every observation surface.
  • Runtime truth survived daemon restart.
  • Cross-workspace CLI, HTTP, UDS, native-tool, and SSE probes disclosed no run data.
  • Four fan-out candidates filtered to the two expected ordered records before batching and max_fan_out: 1; zero-match and predicate-error policies behaved explicitly.
  • A live worker heartbeat succeeded while daemon-owned complete/fail calls were denied by session lineage.
  • A deterministic 17 KB payload externalized to SHA-256 and hydrated downstream with the identical digest.
  • Invalid structured output never settled as succeeded.
  • The post-fix coordinator-failure reproduction ended failed with its next-generation task canceled and zero open descendants.

QA verdict: PASS — all five flagged scenarios are settled.

Full report: docs/qa/reports/2026-08-19-loop-runtime-graph-fixes.md

QA charter: docs/qa/charters/CH-loop-graph-runtime-safety.md

The isolated lab was torn down after the run; teardown.json records clean: true with no surviving processes.

Impact

CLI / HTTP / UDS / Web / config

  • Existing Loop validate, run, config, and status surfaces accept and report typed runtime selection and speed.
  • The Web run form exposes the existing Fast switch for runtime inputs and the inspector shows read-only resolved provenance.
  • config.toml Loop runtime defaults can carry speed; no deprecated or detached Loop setting remains.
  • No SQLite schema migration is introduced.

Compozy Impact Audit

  • Native tools: Existing Loop tool descriptors, schemas, generated digests, validation paths, and tests are updated for runtime input/speed and resolved provenance. No new tool IDs or toolsets are added; daemon-owned workers retain heartbeat but are denied terminal settlement calls.
  • Extensibility and hooks: Existing runtime registries, provider capability checks, native tools, HTTP/UDS adapters, SSE events, and configuration lifecycle carry the new fields. No new hook event, extension resource, bridge SDK contract, or MCP sidecar is introduced.
  • Workspace data isolation: Runtime inputs and resolved provenance remain owned by the workspace-scoped Loop run and its generation/session records. Workspace IDs continue through CLI, HTTP, UDS, core/store, Web, SSE, and cache/event reads. QA proved that a second workspace could not read the run and received no SSE payload.
  • Official Compozy skill: skills/compozy/references/loops.md documents total history, runtime-input precedence, speed, fan-out filtering, output ownership, and failure behavior.

Hard-cut/delete targets

  • Session creation-profile v2 is replaced by v3; no compatibility reader or dual field is added.
  • The old behavior where runtime-typed inputs were accepted but ignored is removed.
  • The worker-side managed complete/fail path is removed from the allowed tool surface.
  • The previous no-op fan-out filter behavior and partial history namespace assumptions are removed.

  • make gate passes locally (make gate-full before review on larger changes) — final gates are delegated to CI as requested.
  • New and changed behavior is covered by canonical tests and provider-backed QA.
  • If an agent wrote or co-wrote this, I named it above and verified the result myself — implementation and QA were performed with Codex; reviewer verification remains in CI/review.

Consider slices.Concat to avoid mutating the store-owned slice.

mutation.StatusTransitions comes from the store with spare capacity. append can therefore write into that backing array instead of allocating. The current code is correct because NewRunLeaseFailedEventPayload(&mutation) runs before this line, but the correctness depends on that statement order.

slices.Concat always allocates a new slice and removes the ordering dependency.

Remove the redundant field check or make the assertion exact.

Line 7757 already compares loaded against resultPayload byte for byte. That check subsumes the new decode. The added block therefore repeats existing coverage.

The resumo assertion is also weak. requiredFields["resumo"] == "" passes for any nonempty string, so it does not verify that the oversized value survived externalization.

Either delete this block or assert the exact expected length, for example len(requiredFields["resumo"]) != looppkg.LoopOutputInlineLimitBytes+1.

As per path instructions: reject "Weak assertions like assert.Error(t, err) without message validation" and "Duplicate test scenarios across packages".

Split the terminal-drain coverage into its own test function.

testGlobalDBCompleteCoordinatorAndEnqueueNextShouldCreateNodeTasksDependenciesAndRuns now verifies two separate behaviors: node materialization and terminal descendant draining. If a drain assertion fails, the failure reports under a materialization test name, which hides the real cause.

Extract lines 6672-6753 into a dedicated helper, for example testGlobalDBCoordinatorTerminalShouldDrainOpenDescendants, and register it under a t.Run("Should drain open Loop descendants at the terminal boundary", ...) subtest. Keep the materialization function focused on materialization.

As per coding guidelines: "Keep one cohesive responsibility per production file" and the test-placement rule that requires eng-consolidate-test-suites before adding or moving a test.

Extract the duplicated row-scan and close handling into one helper.

liveLoopTaskRunIDs and openTaskDescendantIDs repeat the same scan, iterate, and close error handling. The two blocks differ only in the query, the arguments, and the message labels.

Extract one helper that returns []string for a single-column query. This removes about sixty duplicated lines and keeps the close semantics identical in both call sites.

Add a version-2 compatibility or migration path. Profiles stored with Version: 2 retain that version during normalization, then fail validation when GetSessionCreationProfile recomputes the content-addressed reference. Resumed managed Goal work using those profiles will fail after upgrade.

In `@internal/store/session_creation_profile.go` at line 16, Update the session
creation profile normalization and validation flow around
SessionCreationProfileVersion to recognize Version 2 profiles and migrate or
normalize them to the current version before recomputing the content-addressed
reference. Preserve compatibility for resumed managed Goal work while keeping
current Version 3 behavior unchanged.

persisted legacy payloads whose chunks contain [][]any, normalizing each decoded
item into fanOutCandidate while preserving its original index and value. Ensure
both scalar and object items retain their data instead of becoming zero-value
candidates, and add a decode test covering a pre-change payload.
