Issue

ENG-140 — deleting a session must also close every desktop window that belongs to that session.

Root cause

Session deletion removed the session catalog and filesystem state, but it had no runtime seam into the profile/workspace window-manager stream. Window-manager state therefore retained matching windows, closed entries, focus references, and undo/redo snapshots after the session was gone. The existing public close command also rejects pinned windows, so replaying normal close commands could not satisfy the deletion contract.

Implementation

  • Added a session-manager WindowReconciler seam and injected the daemon-owned profile window-manager registry into the session manager.
  • Invoke reconciliation only after the session catalog deletion succeeds. Catalog failures still roll back the staged deletion without touching window-manager state.
  • Added a private, system-only window-manager lifecycle command that removes exact App == "session" and InstanceKey == sessionID matches from every placement in the owning workspace, including tiled, floating, stacked, minimized, pinned, cross-desktop, and closed-entry state.
  • Reuse the durable command/event/client projection path so live subscribers receive the change, while bypassing normal pinned-window restrictions and command history recording.
  • Clear stale undo/redo snapshots so deleted windows cannot be resurrected, repair client focus to the most recently active remaining window, preserve unrelated workspaces, and leave a now-empty desktop empty.
  • Retain committed/staged deletion tombstones when reconciliation or cleanup is transient, retry with bounded exponential delays, and stop/wait workers during manager shutdown and failed boot cleanup.
  • Gate reconciliation on hook/window-manager readiness during startup; classify confirmed profile/workspace deletion as terminal while preserving transient workspace resolver errors for retry.
  • Register the newly created session manager with boot cleanup so failed startup cannot leak a retry worker.

Tests and verification

Passed:

  • CGO_ENABLED=1 go test -race ./internal/session -run '^TestManagerDelete$' -count=1 — 29 tests
  • CGO_ENABLED=1 go test -race ./internal/windowmanager -run '^TestDeletedSessionWindowReconciliation$' -count=1 — 4 tests
  • CGO_ENABLED=1 go test -race ./internal/daemon -run '^TestWindowManagerWorkspaceResolverErrorClassification$' -count=1 — 3 tests
  • Focused daemon registry/deletion/readiness suite under -race — 23 tests
  • go build -o /tmp/compozy-eng140 ./cmd/compozy
  • git diff --check

The scoped Go policy checks pass for the changed code. The scoped make go-lint and the requested make gate stop on 55 pre-existing diagnostics (53 hugeParam and 2 goconst) in unrelated existing files; no diagnostic points to this change. Per the request, make gate-full and make verify were not run.

The isolated QA walk passed through HTTP and UDS/CLI. The Web walk was attempted with the manifest-derived API proxy but was blocked before browser interaction because the cached OpenAPI TypeScript transform could not resolve the typescript package. The QA lab was torn down cleanly (teardown.json: clean: true, no survivors), and RT-014 is recorded as blocked-verify with evidence paths in docs/qa/.

The GPT-5.6-Sol, high-reasoning review found and we fixed retry admission/shutdown races, startup readiness ordering, transient workspace error classification, staged tombstone retry coverage, restart timing, and boot cleanup ownership. The final re-review found no further actionable issues.

Risks and follow-up

  • A transient window-manager or workspace-store failure leaves a durable tombstone and retries until shutdown; confirmed profile/workspace deletion is treated as terminal because no owning stream remains.
  • Web confirmation/cancel verification remains blocked by the repository's missing cached Bun dependency and should be re-walked when that dependency is restored.
  • CI should run the full repository gate, including the currently pre-existing lint diagnostics, on the PR.

Compozy Impact Audit

  • Native tools: No compozy__* tool IDs, toolsets, descriptors, schemas, schema digests, risk flags, availability diagnostics, or capability gates changed; the existing window command/event path is reused.
  • Extensibility and hooks: No extension, registry, skill, resource, MCP, bridge, or config.toml surface changed. The existing window-close event/hook path remains observable, including after startup retry readiness.
  • Workspace data isolation: The changed datum is a profile/workspace-scoped window aggregate. Session deletion carries the stored profile and workspace IDs; the daemon resolves that profile and the reducer targets only that workspace. Tests cover another workspace and unrelated session/app identities, while live events and client projections remain scoped to the owning workspace.
  • Official Compozy skill: No public tool ID, CLI path, hook event, capability, extension resource, or memory/network/task semantic changed; skills/compozy/ was checked and needs no update.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Deleted sessions now reliably remove associated windows across layouts, desktops, and window states.
    • Undo and redo history is cleared to prevent deleted sessions from reappearing.
    • Workspace lookup errors now preserve retryable failures instead of reporting missing workspaces.
  • Reliability
    • Cleanup retries automatically after temporary failures and resumes safely after restarts.
    • Deleted-session cleanup now runs only after deletion is committed, preventing unintended removal during rollbacks.
    • Improved startup and shutdown handling for background cleanup tasks.

Walkthrough

The change adds deleted-session window reconciliation across the window manager, session manager, and daemon. It removes matching windows and history, retries failed cleanup, preserves tombstones until reconciliation succeeds, and enables parallel global migration tests.

Changes

Deleted session window reconciliation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Window manager deletion reconciliation
internal/windowmanager/*, internal/session/interfaces.go, internal/windowmanager/lifecycle_test.go
The window manager removes windows linked to a deleted session, clears related closed entries and history, and retries revision conflicts. Lifecycle tests cover placements, focus, history, and repeated reconciliation.
Session manager post-commit reconciliation
internal/session/manager*.go, internal/session/manager_delete_test.go
The session manager reconciles windows after committed catalog deletion. Failed reconciliation retains tombstones and retries with bounded exponential backoff. Shutdown stops and waits for retry workers.
Daemon reconciler wiring and readiness
internal/daemon/*
Daemon boot creates and injects the window reconciler, marks it ready after hook initialization, starts loop reconciliation during registry boot, and distinguishes workspace resolver failures from missing workspaces.

Global migration test parallelism

Layer / File(s) Summary
Migration helper coordination and parallel tests
internal/store/globaldb/*_test.go
Migration helpers use separate prefix and upgrade coordination. Global migration tests run in parallel, use seeded databases where required, and use migration-specific contexts.

Greptile Summary

The PR connects committed session deletion to profile-scoped window reconciliation and adds durable retry, startup-readiness, and shutdown handling.

  • Removes matching session windows and repairs associated window-manager state.
  • Retains deletion tombstones when reconciliation is transiently unavailable and retries them during runtime or restart.
  • Wires the reconciler through daemon boot and lifecycle cleanup.
  • Adds focused session, window-manager, daemon, and migration-test coverage.

Confidence Score: 4/5

The PR does not yet appear safe to merge because its required workstream-close verification gate remains unsatisfied.

The implementation has focused runtime coverage, but the current QA report explicitly records that the mandatory full gate was not run and retains a BLOCKED verdict.

P1 Required verification gate was skipped

When this runtime change is handed off without a passing make gate-full, the repository-wide build, lint, test, code-generation, and boundary checks remain unsatisfied, so the PR does not meet its required merge gate.

Make both retry tests deterministic. The retry starts after 250 ms, and each attempt can run for up to 5 seconds. The 4-second tombstone deadline depends on scheduler and I/O timing. The restart test also asserts exactly one call while the retry goroutine remains active. Use a test-controlled retry gate, or accept firstCalls.Load() >= 1 and stop retries before asserting the count.

Limit retries to transient reconciliation failures.

cleanupDeleteTombstones schedules retries for every parseable cleanup error. The retry worker repeats every non-context error until shutdown, including metadata ID and owner mismatches. Schedule only errDeletedSessionWindowReconciliationPending errors, and stop the worker when a retry returns a non-transient error.
