Summary

ENG-148 restores agent-manageable Goal orchestration for authenticated sessions. The previous implementation could parse a human /goal prompt, but it did not expose a typed, workspace-safe mutation path that an authorized parent agent could use to control a child session across the native tool, HTTP, UDS, CLI, and Web surfaces. Runtime overrides could also be lost at prompt ingress, and Goal origin/network provenance was not consistently carried into child execution.

This change makes Goal control a first-class structured operation while preserving the existing human prompt grammar and the immutable creation identity of a Goal.

Root cause

  • Goal mutations were coupled to prompt parsing instead of a canonical typed command.
  • Prompt admission could drop a requested provider/model/reasoning/speed runtime.
  • Caller authorization checked the target but did not fully validate same-workspace ancestry or cycles.
  • Provider-only runtime selections could inherit the wrong model, and invalid providers did not produce a stable Goal error code.
  • The native Goal-control descriptor did not describe the complete nullable output contract.
  • Web adapters and generated contracts did not have one typed Goal lifecycle surface.

Design

  • Adds SessionGoalOperation request/result contracts with strict JSON decoding, stable outcome/reason codes, typed runtime selection, and workspace/session-scoped routing.
  • Uses authenticated session lineage (agent_session) for parent-to-child authorization; target, caller, and every ancestry hop must share the canonical workspace and cannot form a cycle.
  • Preserves immutable creation identity, policy, profile, and network participation provenance while allowing each Goal run to select a typed provider/model/reasoning/speed runtime.
  • Retains failed binding evidence and exposes set, replace, status, pause, resume, and clear operations with deterministic responses.
  • Keeps human /goal parsing unchanged; the structured command is the canonical agent path.

Changed surfaces

  • Runtime and persistence: Goal command admission, lineage authorization, managed prompt/runtime persistence, origin/profile/network snapshots, SQL query regeneration, and concurrent child isolation.
  • Native tools: compozy__goal_control registration, availability, closed output schema, nullable Goal snapshot contract, tool catalog fixture, and descriptor tests.
  • HTTP and UDS: typed workspace/session Goal routes, caller headers, canonical workspace resolution, error/status/body assertions, and equivalent structured results.
  • CLI: compozy session goal set|replace|status|pause|resume|clear with JSON output and provider/model/reasoning/speed options; generated CLI reference pages.
  • Contracts/codegen: OpenAPI Go contracts/specs, generated Web types, contract tests, and codegen drift checks.
  • Web: typed session Goal adapter, header hook/action wiring, transcript transport integration, Goal status strip mocks, and session Goal regression tests.
  • Documentation and official skill: Goal lifecycle docs, loops/runtime-operation references, native-tool reference, and CLI command pages under packages/site and skills/compozy.
  • QA: new ENG-148 charter/scenario/report, updated related scenario statuses, journey evidence, and isolated browser screenshots.

Review follow-up

An independent GPT-5.6-Sol high-reasoning review identified eight actionable findings. All were addressed before this PR:

  1. Forwarded prompt runtime into typed Goal commands.
  2. Mapped invalid provider/model runtime validation to stable goal_runtime_invalid errors.
  3. Passed the canonical resolved workspace ID into caller authorization/service layers.
  4. Rejected cross-workspace and cyclic ancestry.
  5. Selected the requested provider's default model when a provider-only runtime override is used.
  6. Closed and completed the native Goal-control output schema.
  7. Added an eight-concurrent-child Goal isolation race test.
  8. Corrected official native-tool documentation counts.

Verification

Focused checks passed:

  • CGO_ENABLED=1 go test -race ./internal/api/core ./internal/daemon ./internal/cli ./internal/tools/builtin ./internal/session -run 'TestGoalReadHandlersExposeSnapshotAndTurnContracts|TestDaemonGoalCommandHandlerShouldExecuteCanonicalSessionLifecycle|TestSessionGoalCommandForwardsTypedMutation|TestBuiltinNativeDescriptors|TestBuiltinToolsetCatalog|TestManagerGoalCommandDispatchShouldPreserveIngressAndDraftAdmission' -count=1
  • make codegen-check
  • bunx turbo run typecheck --filter=./web
  • bunx turbo run test --filter=./web -- --run src/systems/session/adapters/__tests__/session-api.test.ts src/systems/session/components/__tests__/session-goal-header.test.tsx — 65 tests passed.
  • Direct daemon and ACP mock driver builds.
  • git diff --check and Go formatting checks.

Isolated QA evidence:

  • Manifest: /Users/pedronauck/dev/qa-labs/compozy-eng-148-agent-session-control-20260825-014009-304323-lab/qa-artifacts/qa/bootstrap-manifest.json
  • Journey log: /Users/pedronauck/dev/qa-labs/compozy-eng-148-agent-session-control-20260825-014009-304323-lab/qa-artifacts/qa/journey-log.jsonl
  • Final binary CLI set/pause/resume, HTTP set/read, UDS read, parent-to-child control, and child-to-parent rejection all passed.
  • Browser session rendered the Goal status strip and expanded Contract/Run/Context/Last verdict/Node rows; screenshots are qa/screenshots/goal-status-strip.png and qa/screenshots/goal-status-expanded.png in the lab output.
  • Teardown evidence: qa/teardown.json has "clean": true; all daemon, Vite, tmux, and browser processes were reaped.
  • The strict QA auditor reports only C14 (missing full make verify evidence). The full monorepo gate is intentionally not run locally because the task explicitly reserves make gate-full/make verify for CI.

Risks and rollout

  • This introduces new public Goal-control routes and CLI verbs, so callers must use the typed operation names and reason codes rather than relying on prompt text.
  • Authorization is intentionally strict: a caller with no authenticated session lineage, a foreign workspace, or a cyclic ancestry receives a deterministic rejection.
  • Runtime model/provider validation now fails early with a stable Goal error instead of starting with an ambiguous runtime.
  • The Web action remains truthful to the runtime snapshot; it does not invent context percentages or controls for unsupported states.

Migration and compatibility

  • No SQLite schema migration or compatibility bridge is required; the change uses existing Goal/session storage and regenerates sqlc/OpenAPI/Web artifacts.
  • Existing human /goal prompt syntax remains supported.
  • Existing loop/session APIs continue to work; the new typed routes and CLI commands are additive public surfaces.
  • No new config.toml key is introduced. Provider defaults are resolved through the existing workspace provider configuration.

Compozy Impact Audit

  • Native tools: added/updated compozy__goal_control tool ID, toolset binding, availability diagnostics, closed I/O schema, nullable snapshot/result contract, catalog fixture, descriptor tests, and generated contract coverage.
  • Extensibility and hooks: wired Goal operations through the existing session command/service and native-tool registries; reused provider/runtime configuration and official skill references; no new config key or extension bridge is required.
  • Workspace data isolation: Goal target, caller, ancestry, origin, profile, network participation, run, turn, event, HTTP/UDS route, CLI request, Web cache, and SSE/session projection are all workspace/session qualified. Same-workspace lineage and foreign/cyclic rejection are covered by focused race tests and the isolated parent/child QA walk.
  • Official Compozy skill: updated skills/compozy/references/loops.md, native-tools.md, and runtime-operations.md with the typed Goal lifecycle and corrected native-tool inventory.

CI

Please run the full repository gate and the normal PR checks in CI. No full-monorepo gate was run locally by design.

Estimated code review effort: 5 (Critical) | ~120 minutes

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 6bfa9

The PR adds typed Goal lifecycle controls across authenticated sessions and client surfaces. It is mergeable with owner awareness: runtime-override behavior is not distinctly verified by one integration test, and malformed-JSON handling in the web mock does not match the documented 400 response, which can allow regressions or misleading client tests.

Greptile Summary

The PR restores typed, authenticated Goal lifecycle control across runtime, native-tool, HTTP, UDS, CLI, generated-contract, and Web surfaces.

  • Adds workspace- and lineage-scoped Goal operations with runtime selection and stable result codes.
  • Propagates Goal runtime and provenance through persistence and child execution.
  • Adds public adapters, CLI commands, Web integration, documentation, and focused regression coverage.

Confidence Score: 4/5

The PR should not merge until the required full repository gate passes and the QA report records that result.

The report still closes a runtime, API, CLI, and Web workstream while explicitly recording that make gate-full and make verify were not run, leaving the previously reported completion requirement unresolved.

Make the override test distinguish the new behavior.

The test passes true, but it does not set a divergent request.Runtime or assert the overridden model, reasoning, and speed. The current provider-only assertion can pass when runtime override is disabled. Supply a non-matching runtime and assert the returned runtime fields while confirming the persisted profile remains unchanged.

128-155: 🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🔵 Trivial | 💤 Low value

Consider bounding the lineage walk cost.

Each loop iteration performs one s.sessionStatus.Status store read. The bound is 256 hops. One inexpensive Goal command from an agent caller can therefore trigger up to 256 sequential reads on the request thread before the denial is returned.

Real lineage depth is small, and the sessions are workspace-scoped, so the practical exposure is limited. If lineage depth is expected to stay shallow, replace 256 with a named constant that reflects the real policy limit.

Assert the error message, not just the error presence.

Join the spawned goroutines before the test returns.

Lines 604-620 spawn eight goroutines. The collection loop at lines 623-658 drains eight results, so on a passing run every goroutine has finished its send.

On a failing run the behaviour differs. Any t.Fatalf inside the loop, for example at line 626 or 631, ends the test goroutine while up to seven goroutines still run. Those goroutines continue to use fixture.db and testutil.Context(t). t.Cleanup then closes the database underneath them. The result is a panic in a background goroutine, which fails the whole test binary and hides the original assertion failure.

Add a sync.WaitGroup and join it with t.Cleanup so the workers always complete first.

CodeRabbit remediation round 1

Addressed all five actionable findings from the first review and pushed 9032e04:

  • /goal draft now runs authenticated caller/lineage authorization before rewriting the prompt.
  • Authorization denials use a sentinel; session-store failures propagate as infrastructure errors, and discarded runtime/actor/authorization details are logged with slog.
  • Prepared Goal prompt idempotency now compares normalized provider, model, reasoning, and speed fields; the generated SQL mapping carries those fields into the identity check.
  • Web MSW Goal handlers now enforce workspace ownership and reject missing/unsupported operations with production-matching 404/400 responses.
  • The CLI regression uses the required t.Run("Should …") shape.

Focused evidence after the fix: daemon/CLI race tests passed; Web Turbo tests passed (78 tests); make codegen-check, make codegen, git diff --check, and Go formatting passed. The integration-tag package remains blocked by two pre-existing compile errors in unrelated globaldb integration tests; the non-integration globaldb package compiles with race.

550-583: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Handle malformed JSON bodies.

When request.json() rejects, catch the error and return HTTP 400 instead of propagating the rejected promise. Add a malformed-JSON test.
