Summary

This PR fixes six related Loop runtime defects across recovery, Goal session ownership, failure policy, terminal timestamps, and effective configuration inspection.

The changes make persisted execution history authoritative and explainable:

  • immutable executed-definition snapshots are verified against their original bytes;
  • one corrupt or incompatible snapshot is terminalized without preventing healthy coordinators from booting;
  • Goal session cleanup and binding allocation are idempotent under replay and concurrent lifecycle paths;
  • operators can opt into reattempt_strategy: halt without losing the ability to rerun explicitly;
  • terminal runs persist an exact completed_at timestamp;
  • inspect, dry-run, status, CLI, HTTP, UDS, and native tools expose the effective config together with per-field provenance.

This is intentionally a draft while the remaining isolated QA walk and exact-head CI complete.

Issues and root-cause fixes

#451 — incompatible executed-definition snapshots caused a boot crash-loop

Executed-definition snapshots are content-addressed. The loader previously decoded persisted JSON into current structs and then re-marshaled it before validating the digest. Adding a new non-omitempty effective-config field changed those re-encoded bytes, so a valid snapshot written by an earlier binary appeared corrupt after upgrade.

This PR:

  • verifies the digest against the exact persisted raw bytes before hydration;
  • returns a dedicated snapshot-integrity error rather than silently accepting or rewriting history;
  • allows the scheduler backstop to settle that coordinator as failed and continue booting other Loop runs;
  • treats a missing bound session as already cleaned during recovery instead of failing the entire recovery path.

No skip-digest flag, database reset path, compatibility alias, or mutable snapshot fallback was added.

#480 — Goal session cleanup replay compared mutable metadata as identity

Cleanup identity is the binding tuple (workspace, loop run, handle, epoch, session). The persistence layer also compared cause and created_at, so legitimate stop, terminal, control-revoked, and reseed paths could race and turn the second delivery into transition conflict: payload changed.

This PR:

  • compares only immutable cleanup identity;
  • preserves the first writer's cause and timestamp;
  • keeps true workspace, run, handle, epoch, or session divergence as a transition conflict;
  • retains one durable, claimable cleanup obligation under replay.

#485 — later Goal generations reused a closed binding epoch

A new generation started from checkpoint epoch zero and derived epoch one again, while the deterministic creation identity included the new generation. The store correctly rejected that different identity for an already closed epoch.

This PR:

  • adds an atomic, workspace-scoped binding-attempt allocator;
  • chooses the active compatible binding or the next consecutive epoch inside the same immediate transaction;
  • fences stale and skipped epochs;
  • recomputes binding attempt, session, and creation identities from the allocated epoch;
  • records failed Goal attempts in the node-attempt ledger so breaker and quarantine logic retain evidence.

The allocator does not perform an unsafe read-max-then-insert sequence outside the transaction.

#472 — opt-in halt reattempt strategy

Loops previously supported only failed_only and full_body. This PR adds halt as an explicit third strategy while leaving failed_only as the default.

When a generation fails under halt:

  • the run becomes terminal failed;
  • no successor generation, coordinator reservation, quarantine, or automatic node work is admitted;
  • the failed generation history remains available;
  • an operator can still explicitly rerun from a settled failed node.

The enum is propagated through domain validation, OpenAPI, native-tool schemas and catalog, CLI transport, Web draft normalization, and the Configure UI.

QA-discovered rerun correction

The first public QA walk exposed a related defect: a halted run can legitimately retain downstream cells that never started as pending, and the time-travel service treated every pending cell as busy.

The corrected planner now:

  • computes the selected node's transitive dependency closure through the graph, including nodes without a materialized output cell;
  • preserves fan-out lane scoping and parked barriers;
  • permits pending cells only when they belong to that rerun closure;
  • keeps pending cells outside the closure and active states such as running, enqueued, retrying, and awaiting-child busy;
  • prevents unrelated pending cells from being carried forward as false successes.

The finding and governed retest are tracked in docs/qa/bugs/BUG-20260826-halt-rerun-busy.md.

#486 — terminal runs omitted an exact completion timestamp

last_progress_at is worker progress and cannot represent terminal time. The exact transition time already existed on status events but was not persisted on the run aggregate.

This PR:

  • adds nullable loop_runs.completed_at in append-only migration 00092_schema.sql;
  • backfills only from matching workspace-scoped terminal status events;
  • leaves historical rows null when no authoritative event exists;
  • writes the same transition timestamp atomically from both terminal transition authorities;
  • clears completed_at when an explicit rerun reactivates a run;
  • exposes completed_at through domain, HTTP/UDS, CLI, native tools, OpenAPI, and generated Web types;
  • makes the Web duration use completed_at for terminal runs so the displayed duration no longer grows after reload.

The rebase preserved main's existing 00090 and 00091 migrations byte-for-byte and moved this PR's migration to the next gap-free version, 00092.

#489 — effective config values had no provenance

Operators could see the resolved values but could not tell which layer won. Status was also at risk of explaining a historical run using current workspace configuration.

This PR adds EffectiveConfig.Sources, keyed by JSON Pointer, with logical source labels:

  • builtin
  • definition
  • delivery_default or watch_default
  • loop_config
  • per_run

Value and source are updated together during merge, including explicit zero and false values. The source map is deep-cloned into the executed-definition snapshot.

Inspect, dry-run, and current configuration report their resolved values and sources. Run status reads the pinned executed snapshot, so later changes to Loop config cannot rewrite the explanation of an older run.

Public surface changes

Runtime and persistence

  • raw-byte executed snapshot integrity validation;
  • isolated coordinator failure during boot recovery;
  • idempotent Goal cleanup identity;
  • atomic Goal binding epoch allocation;
  • halt failure succession;
  • exact terminal completion time and rerun clearing;
  • dependency-aware explicit rerun closure;
  • pinned effective-config provenance.

HTTP, UDS, CLI, and native tools

  • completed_at is returned for Loop run payloads and remains null for live or unverifiable historical runs;
  • effective_config and sources are returned by inspect/status paths;
  • human CLI output prints effective values, source attribution, and completion time;
  • compozy__loop_status and related descriptors/catalog fixtures carry the same contract;
  • no native-tool ID was added or renamed.

Web

  • Configure exposes Failed only, Full body, and Halt;
  • draft parsing and tests accept all three enum values;
  • terminal duration uses completed_at and remains stable after reload;
  • generated OpenAPI types are refreshed.

Documentation and official skill

Updated Loop configuration, guardrail, DSL, running, and time-travel documentation, plus the official skills/compozy Loop and configuration references. The docs describe logical provenance, pinned historical status, halt semantics, and downstream pending reruns.

Schema and generated artifacts

  • declarative loop_runs schema updated with nullable completed_at;
  • append-only migration 00092_schema.sql added;
  • atlas.sum regenerated after rebasing over main's 00090 and 00091;
  • sqlc output regenerated;
  • OpenAPI, native-tool catalog, and Web TypeScript contracts regenerated.

There are no compatibility columns, aliases, dual fields, or boot-time schema repair paths.

Verification completed before publication

Passed locally before the final rebase/formatter pass:

  • make codegen-check
  • make build
  • focused go test -race coverage for internal/loop, daemon/CLI/native-tool paths, and GlobalDB integration suites;
  • focused Turborepo Web tests for Loop Configure/draft behavior and terminal duration;
  • explicit rerun regression coverage for:
    • terminal pending dependents;
    • dependency traversal across an unmaterialized node;
    • pending cells outside the rerun closure;
    • genuinely active cells;
    • live-run rejection.

After rebasing onto a35d19f58, code generation completed and the rebase validation script found no conflict markers or unresolved files. A local scoped gate then passed codegen-check and identified only Go formatter drift. The repository formatter was applied successfully to the five reported files. Per the operator's explicit request, the final scoped gate is delegated to this PR's exact-head CI.

QA status

An isolated public-interface QA lab has already verified:

  • dry-run creates no run;
  • explicit zero/false config overrides retain per_run provenance;
  • stored config uses loop_config provenance;
  • halt terminalizes once with no automatic successor;
  • a historical run keeps its pinned config after current config changes;
  • HTTP, native-tool, CLI, and Web status agree on terminal state, completion time, and effective config;
  • Web terminal duration remains stable after reload;
  • Configure saves the new halt strategy.

The first walk found the pending-dependent rerun defect described above. Production code and canonical regression tests are now fixed. The fresh public rerun retest, strict QA auditor, report settlement, and mandatory isolated-runtime teardown evidence remain in progress, which is why this PR is draft.

QA artifacts live under:

  • docs/qa/scenarios/LP-effective-config-provenance.md
  • docs/qa/scenarios/LP-halt-on-node-failure.md
  • docs/qa/scenarios/LP-terminal-completion-time.md
  • docs/qa/scenarios/LP-invalid-snapshot-boot-isolation.md
  • docs/qa/reports/2026-08-26-loop-issues-fixes.md

Compozy Impact Audit

  • Native tools: Existing Loop inspect/status/run descriptors and output schemas changed to carry effective config provenance and completion time. Tool IDs, capability gates, and risk flags are unchanged. HTTP/CLI fallbacks and catalog fixtures were checked and updated.
  • Extensibility and hooks: No new hook, extension resource, registry, bridge SDK, or MCP sidecar contract. halt reuses the existing failed terminal transition. Config lifecycle gains metadata only; no new config.toml key was introduced. Official skill references were updated.
  • Workspace data isolation: Snapshots, config provenance, run status, completion time, Goal bindings, and cleanup remain workspace/run scoped. Snapshot lookup and migration backfill join on both workspace and run identity. Status reads the run's pinned snapshot rather than current workspace defaults.
  • Official Compozy skill: skills/compozy/references/loops.md and skills/compozy/references/configuration.md now document halt, terminal rerun behavior, and source attribution.

Review focus

Please pay particular attention to:

  1. the raw-byte digest boundary and boot isolation in snapshot recovery;
  2. immutable identity versus first-writer metadata in Goal cleanup;
  3. transaction fencing in Goal binding epoch allocation;
  4. explicit rerun closure across absent fan-out cells;
  5. completed_at authority and migration backfill evidence;
  6. pinned versus current effective-config provenance across API/native/CLI surfaces.

Remaining before ready for review

  • exact-head required CI checks green;
  • fresh public retest of explicit rerun after halt;
  • strict QA audit and scenario/report settlement;
  • isolated QA teardown recorded with clean: true;
  • final deslop and completion verification pass.

Greptile Summary

This PR hardens Loop recovery, Goal binding lifecycle, terminal timestamps, halt/rerun behavior, and effective-configuration provenance across persistence and public surfaces. The functional QA scenarios are now settled, but the required local and exact-head gates remain incomplete.

  • Verifies executed-definition snapshots against their persisted bytes and isolates invalid recovery records.
  • Adds atomic Goal binding allocation and idempotent cleanup behavior.
  • Adds halt semantics, dependency-aware explicit reruns, durable completion timestamps, and pinned configuration provenance.
  • Propagates the resulting contracts through HTTP, CLI, native tools, Web, schemas, migrations, and documentation.

Confidence Score: 4/5

The PR is not yet safe to merge because its mandatory local gate was deferred and exact-head verification remains incomplete.

The functional QA scenarios and explicit rerun retest are now recorded as passing, but the changed report explicitly states that the required local gate was not run and that current-head CI remains pending.

Make allocation honor TargetBindingEpoch. When the request targets the next epoch, bindFromActiveSession reaches ensureRunOwnedBinding. AllocateSessionBindingAttempt then returns the existing active binding when the profile and policy digest match, without checking the target epoch. Line 207 therefore skips session creation and finalization, so same-profile rotations can reuse the old session. Add an epoch-aware allocation check and a regression test.

🌐 Web query:

According to the Go language specification, does new(completedAt)compile whencompletedAtis a localtime.Time variable?

💡 Result:

According to the Go language specification, the built-in function new requires a type as its argument, not a variable [1]. Therefore, new(completedAt) will result in a compilation error if completedAt is a variable [1]. The new(T) built-in function is defined to take a type T and return a pointer to a newly allocated zero value of that type [2][3][1]. While some documentation or contexts might occasionally confuse the argument as an expression, the specification and the built-in definition explicitly state that the first argument to new is a type [1]. Using an identifier that refers to a variable, such as a local time.Time variable, is invalid because the compiler expects a type name, not an expression or variable name [1].

Use the address of completedAt.

new(completedAt) treats completedAt as a type, but it is a local time.Time value. The package does not compile. Set run.CompletedAt = &completedAt.

- Focused Go regression command passed before rebase:
`go test -race ./internal/loop -run '^(TestCoordinatorOperatorRerunPlanner|TestServiceTimeTravelShouldPreserveHistoryContracts)$'`.
- Fresh current-head `make build` passed in the isolated lab.
- The operator explicitly deferred the scoped local `make gate` rerun to PR CI.

P1 Required gate remains deferred

When these non-documentation changes are committed or pushed, this report defers the mandatory local make gate run to pending CI, leaving the QA settlement incomplete and delivery explicitly blocked without exact-head gate evidence.

Keep the run snapshot and effective_config consistent.

These run-detail objects use loopEffectiveConfigFixture, but their run values differ. The run sets iteration_cap to 20, budget_tokens to 900_000, and budget_wall_sec to 7_200; the shared fixture sets 16, 750_000, and 0. The mock response exposes two configurations for the same run. Use a release-train effective-config fixture that matches the run, or update the run fields to match the shared fixture. Apply the same correction to the partial and fork details.
