What & why

Repeated verification and development startup were paying for work that had already succeeded: Turbo reran the entire generated-artifact check before cached downstream tasks, development entry points regenerated unchanged artifacts, and Air relinked an unchanged executable because its atomic next-output path disappeared after publication. Several legacy migration fixtures also replayed an empty historical prefix unnecessarily.

This PR reduces those costs while retaining artifact-drift detection, Go race coverage, test isolation, actual migration upgrades, and failed-build recovery. It also restores tooling tests that were missing from normal workspace/CI execution and fixes the existing lint-rule regression those tests exposed.

Development and code generation

  • Add evidence-backed codegen and generate gate modes. The two records are distinct: a successful generation does not stand in for a successful drift check.
  • Route Turbo's codegen prerequisite through the gate. Its task remains uncached in Turbo so every invocation validates the prerequisite's evidence before downstream cache reuse.
  • Key the new reusable lanes by repository content plus Go toolchain/build settings, Bun executable/version, and Mage selection. Require a successful retained log. Source edits, artifact edits/removal, toolchain-option changes, and failures invalidate reuse.
  • Add make codegen-dev and wire the development entry points to it. Preserve unconditional make codegen and make codegen-check for explicit generation and verification.
  • Fingerprint inputs before execution. Generation that changes tracked content can require one further run; this deliberately avoids certifying source edits made while generation was running.
  • Publish the existing process-local codegen success marker only after every CodegenCheck step passes. E2E asset preparation now shares the same behavior as Verify, avoiding redundant descendant checks within that pipeline.
  • Seed Air's next-output binary from the current executable before go build, allowing Go's own build-ID validation to skip unnecessary linking. Publish atomically only after success, preserving the runnable daemon after a failed compilation.
  • Query the ready daemon's configuration through its just-built binary instead of go run. Honor COMPOZY_AIR_BUILD_DIR consistently across build, launch, configuration lookup, and cleanup.

Go tests

  • Update two extension-environment migration fixtures to clone the existing empty historical-prefix template. Each still seeds its own legacy data and performs the actual upgrade, reopen, constraint, and ownership assertions. Migration SQL and user-state contracts are unchanged.
  • Remove two success-only codegen helper cases whose output/header assertions are already owned by TestRunWithPaths, which also checks the generated contracts. Preserve the separate write-failure cases and artifact-drift checks.
  • Keep the existing Go race instrumentation, modernc-scoped checkptr exception, and package/test concurrency policy.

TypeScript tests and tooling coverage

  • Use Vitest's threads pool for Web with the existing worker bound and isolation settings. All 6,807 test names/results match the baseline.
  • Remove the stale root Vitest reference to the deleted scaffold workspace; include the active Desktop and lint-plugin projects.
  • Register the lint plugins as a Turbo workspace and include their 47 tests in CI selection. Include the UI export inventories in the test task's inputs and affected-lane mapping.
  • Fix the UI primitive-reuse rule to follow relative star-re-exported inventories. Four existing tests exposed the regression; their assertions were preserved. Rename three local component identifiers flagged by the restored rule without changing rendered behavior.
  • Select development-readiness tests when Air/supervisor scripts change.
  • Remove the tracked 15.2 MB generated Go test executable and ignore root test binaries. No source test suite was removed with it.

Measured local results

Baseline: 610abf293. Machine: macOS arm64, 16 logical CPUs, 128 GiB RAM, Go 1.26.6, Bun 1.4.0.

Operation Before After Reduction Method
Repeat Web typecheck with downstream cache populated 29.653 s 0.527 s 98.2% 10 runs after 3 warmups
Repeat development artifact preparation 17.460 s 0.517 s 97.0% 10 runs after 3 warmups
Unchanged Air build 11.731 s 0.925 s 92.1% 10 runs after 3 warmups; identical executable SHA-256
Ready-daemon configuration lookup 648.7 ms 21.5 ms 96.7% 10 runs after 3 warmups; identical decoded JSON
Full Web unit suite 147.32 s 116.96 s 20.6% One complete run per pool; 6,807 passing cases
Codegen race suite 50.944 s 49.058 s 3.7% One profiled race run per version
Five selected GlobalDB migration suites 170.720 s 155.982 s 8.6% One race-enabled run per version

These are local observations, not a measured reduction in total GitHub Actions time or the entire Go suite. The first four rows measure warm repeated work. Other validation/worktree activity overlapped some samples; the report records that limitation and variation. Web and migration figures are single-run observations. No aggregate memory improvement is claimed for threads versus forks, and these percentages must not be added together.

The unchanged-input development walk reached daemon readiness in 4.640 s and Vite readiness in 5.488 s. This is a warm startup observation, not a cold-install or browser-load benchmark.

See the performance report for mechanisms, reproduction, profiling findings, and rejected changes. In particular, a global Go processor-cap change and a production migration-directory cache were rejected because their measured CPU benefit did not justify them. Mechanical test-deletion candidates were not applied in bulk.

How you verified it

Automated validation

  • make gate: passed all affected lanes before commit, including script integration, Mage tests, Go lint/race tests, and root Turbo lint/typecheck/test. Valid compiler/Turbo evidence was reused after complete runs.
  • bunx turbo run test --filter=compozy-web --force: all 6,807 cases passed. Normalized (fullName, status) lists from both pools have the same SHA-256: c33a49a23e2612e9b86571a5ebada06e8d97a0014ff14c9005ef741eeed55f51.
  • Root Turbo verification: 8,158 passing JavaScript tests across Web, UI, site, Desktop, SDKs, and lint plugins; 24 successful tasks.
  • Complete affected Go storage race coverage passed, including GlobalDB (880.961 s in the uncached validation run), store, sessiondb, and workspacedb. This is correctness evidence, not a full-suite speed comparison.
  • make test-e2e-runtime: 262 passing cases: daemon 178, HTTP 21, UDS 51, runtime harness 8, remote-gateway CLI 4. Asset-build logs confirm descendant reuse of the successful parent codegen check.
  • Existing gate integration suite: real Make/temp-Git fixtures prove successful reuse, source/artifact invalidation, artifact deletion, uncached failures, repair, and GOFLAGS invalidation for both new modes.
  • Existing development-readiness suite: real Bash/Go builds check unchanged executable bytes, source changes, embedded-data changes, and retention of the runnable binary after compilation failure. Readiness ordering remains covered.
  • Lint-plugin tests exercise actual Oxlint processes; all 47 pass with the original failure assertions intact.
  • git diff --check and shell syntax checks passed. Hooks run the existing formatter/linter and commit-message checks, with automatic Git stash/revert disabled to respect repository instructions.

No standalone test files were added: the new behavior is covered in its existing owning suites. The two removed codegen success cases were exact same-layer duplicates; error and drift coverage remains.

Real development QA

The isolated RT-dev-bootstrap-ready walk reached onboarding through Vite and survived browser refresh. CLI status, direct HTTP, and Vite-proxied requests reached the same isolated daemon; status/workspace/task requests succeeded. A deliberate invalid Go edit left the API serving HTTP 200, and removing it restored a successful build with unchanged daemon bytes. No visual redesign was introduced.

The targeted evidence audit passed with zero blockers/warnings. Both owned environments recorded clean teardown with no survivors. See the QA report and the updated readiness scenario.

Existing jsdom/reduced-motion/failure-path diagnostics, macOS linker deprecation messages, and Web bundle/plugin notices remain visible; none were suppressed. Lint reported zero issues. The full Playwright suite and live-provider journeys were not part of the local targeted QA.

Raw local logs, benchmark JSON, CPU profiles, and checksums are retained in .compozy/tasks/tests-cleanup/performance/ on the implementation worktree; they are ignored local evidence, not committed binaries or PR attachments. The durable performance and QA reports are committed.

Agent authorship: OpenAI Codex implemented, reviewed, benchmarked, and executed the validation described above. Human review/verification has not been represented as completed.

PR CI: CI run 33994685570 passed for commit a4dac0f0fcc6dacc4f5ec64ec87446510310cf55. All eight Go race shards, all four E2E Web shards, E2E runtime, E2E Desktop, frontend verification, Desktop verification, preflight, Go format/lint/build/boundaries, SDK tests, and platform checks passed. React Doctor and the preview deployment also passed. All reported checks are successful or intentionally skipped; no pending or failed checks remain. This adds remote browser coverage to the local evidence above, without claiming a before/after CI performance comparison.

Impact

Surface Impact
Native tools, CLI, HTTP, UDS No compozy__* IDs, verbs, flags, routes, DTOs, or output contracts changed. The supervisor invokes the existing config CLI through the ready executable.
Extensions, hooks, bridges, SDK contracts No public interface change. E2E preparation reuses a successful generation check; the lint fix reads the existing UI inventory.
User config and persisted state No config.toml shape, SQLite schema, migration SQL, or persisted layout change. No compatibility shim or data migration is required.
Workspace isolation Runtime data paths are unchanged. Test preparation clones empty prefixes only; seeded upgrade and isolation assertions remain. Development QA used an isolated home, ports, and sockets.
Web Vitest execution and development orchestration change; three local identifiers are renamed. Rendered behavior is unchanged.
Developer tooling New make codegen-dev; consistent existing build-directory override; content/context-keyed reuse; restored lint-plugin workspace/CI selection.
Official skill No update to skills/compozy/ is needed because public tools and runtime semantics are unchanged.
Documentation Add the performance runbook and QA report; update RT-dev-bootstrap-ready. Public site documentation is unaffected.

The cross-surface analysis is recorded in the committed performance report. Internal consumers move together; no obsolete aliases or legacy branches were introduced.

  • make gate passes locally; this PR is delivered only after its required CI checks are green
  • New or changed behavior is covered by tests, or I explained above why not
  • If an agent wrote or co-wrote this, I named it above and verified the result myself

Local gate, PR CI, and agent verification are complete. The final checkbox is reserved for the human author's own verification.

Greptile Summary

This PR reduces repeated development and verification work while preserving generated-artifact validation and failed-build recovery.

  • Adds content- and toolchain-keyed evidence lanes for code generation and drift checking.
  • Reuses Go executable build IDs while retaining atomic Air binary publication.
  • Restores lint-plugin workspace coverage and follows the current UI export inventories.
  • Adjusts migration fixtures and Vitest execution to reduce test overhead without changing runtime contracts.
  • Removes a tracked generated test executable and documents the measured performance and QA evidence.

Confidence Score: 5/5

The PR appears safe to merge, with no concrete correctness, security, migration, or test-coverage regression identified.

The new evidence reuse remains tied to repository and tool context, Air publication preserves the previous executable on failure, migration fixtures still perform real upgrades, and the restored tooling tests are selected by Turbo and CI.

Assert the compiler diagnostic from the invalid source.

build(false) accepts any non-zero exit from build-air.sh, including failures from cp, mkdir, or go build unrelated to the invalid source. Assert that the captured output contains the Go compiler syntax error for "this is invalid Go".

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Assert that expected failures report artifact drift.

runGate returns a generic process error for any failure from make codegen-check or make codegen. The call-count assertion only proves that the target ran, so a later unrelated command failure can satisfy wantFailure. Assert the expected *exec.ExitError and a stable cmp drift diagnostic for each failure case.
