Closes #605.

Problem and behavior

Reasoning between tool calls flushed the current tool cluster, so a single investigation produced repeated Thought / tool-group / tool rows. The transcript now projects consecutive reasoning and tool activity in the same turn and work segment into one expandable group. Expanding it renders the original parts in chronological order. Assistant response text, user messages, turn boundaries, visible runtime decisions and deliberate terminal interactions remain separate.

Implementation

  • Widen the internal work-entry model to reasoning or tool parts and derive mixed segments without crossing narrative boundaries.
  • Count actual tools separately from thoughts; expose running, thinking, interrupted and failed activity in the compact summary. Keep labels bounded and preserve the existing tool-only and reasoning-only presentation.
  • Reuse the production reasoning and tool-detail components through one shared work-entry renderer, preserving markdown, complete supplied payloads, copy actions and exact-part search reveal.
  • Carry the widened model through group anchors, row equality and turn folds. Retained anchors preserve disclosure identity as content arrives; fold summaries and changed-file extraction count only real tool entries. Existing virtual measurement and scroll ownership continue to apply.

Verification

  • Canonical projection, scroll anchoring, thread and navigation suites, run through repository-root Turborepo. Coverage includes mixed order and lossless part retention, tool-only counts, terminal/permission/turn boundaries, reasoning updates, streaming settlement, retained disclosure DOM identity/focus and exact reasoning/tool search reveal.
  • Real isolated daemon + current-source frontend + Codex: inspected the persisted mixed transcript at narrow (390×844) and wide viewports, expanded reasoning and tool details, used copy, searched both kinds from a closed fold, reloaded, and observed separate subsequent turns. Lab teardown confirmed clean: true.
  • The browser walk captured settled mixed detail. The exact live mixed expansion interval is covered by the interaction suite; the provider's later monitoring turn emitted only tools.
  • Initial local gate: lint/typecheck passed; 7,189 tests passed and one runtime-provider integration test still expected the old uncollapsed presentation. Its interaction was updated while retaining every order/content assertion; all 58 tests in that suite passed. At the user’s request, remaining gates run in PR CI instead of repeating the shared local queue. The first CodeRabbit and Greptile reviews are complete. The single consolidated review-remediation commit is validated by current-head GitHub CI; no second review round is requested or required under the revised delivery contract.

Impact and limits

Presentation-only internal Web change. No persisted transcript, migration, public protocol, native tool, CLI/HTTP/UDS, extension/hook, configuration or workspace-isolation change. Official agent skill and public API documentation require no change. Cross-surface audit is in docs/_memory/change-impact.md; RT-048 and RT-055 and the dated QA report describe the changed behavior.

The real run used the installed daemon beta.24 with this branch's frontend; no host daemon was restarted. Screenshots and clean teardown are retained in the QA evidence directory. Their sidecar publication is blocked because installed Skeeper 0.3.1 rejects Git's worktreeconfig extension; the QA report explicitly distinguishes local evidence from published artifacts. No unrelated runtime payload/whitespace behavior was changed.

First review and consolidated remediation

CodeRabbit review 5172889527 covered 13f653a; all paginated reviews, inline threads, general comments and collapsed sections were collected. Its four actionable inline findings are addressed together in 2af6168: namespaced React entry keys, trailing progress-tick live-tail detection, consistent cancellation-state normalization/detail, and explicit expanded reasoning-body/order assertions. Existing canonical suites were extended; their remediation executions are delegated to CI. Relevant projection/identity/rendering functions now document their contracts in JSDoc.

Greptile completed its first review on 13f653a with no actionable findings and a successful review check. No post-remediation reviewer coverage is claimed or required. Current-head CI is pending; this PR remains in delivery validation and must not be merged by the executor.

The Vercel site preview on the initial head failed outside the changed surface: its Bun 1.3.14 runner rejected this repository's lockfile version, ignored the lockfile, resolved different Fumadocs/Zod versions and failed site TypeScript. The repository pins Bun 1.4.0, and this PR does not change the site, lockfile or deployment configuration. Branch rules do not require the Vercel preview; it is recorded as a separate external preview limitation, not a successful deployment. GitHub CI results remain the delivery gate.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Mixed reasoning and tool activity now appears together in a unified, expandable work disclosure.
    • Find results can open the relevant disclosure and reveal matching reasoning or tool fields.
    • Streaming and interrupted activity now display clearer status indicators.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved timeline grouping and rendering for mixed reasoning and tool entries.
    • Preserved disclosure state while new activity arrives or the timeline updates.
    • Ensured interrupted and cancelled tool activity is labelled and handled consistently.
    • Disclosures now collapse and reopen cleanly during navigation.

Walkthrough

The session timeline now groups reasoning and tool entries into shared same-turn work disclosures. Rendering, identity, equality, folding, streaming behavior, interruption handling, search reveals, and focus preservation support the mixed work model.

Greptile Summary

This PR changes the session transcript projection so adjacent reasoning and tool activity within the same turn appears as one ordered, expandable work segment.

  • Preserves chronological reasoning and tool details while keeping narrative, permission, terminal, and turn boundaries separate.
  • Stabilizes disclosure identity, equality, search reveal, folding, and streaming-to-settled updates for mixed entries.
  • Counts only actual tools in tool summaries while exposing reasoning, running, stopped, and failed states.
  • Adds focused projection, navigation, interaction, runtime-provider, QA scenario, and rendered-validation coverage.

Confidence Score: 5/5

The PR appears safe to merge from a code-review perspective, with no outstanding actionable findings.

The current implementation preserves mixed-entry ordering and disclosure identity, keeps narrative and interaction boundaries intact, normalizes interrupted tool states, and includes focused tests for search reveal, streaming settlement, folding, and retained DOM identity. The previous Greptile review reported no findings, and the post-review merge only reconciles the shared impact document with the updated base.

178-178: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Keep deliberate terminal tools visible in mixed work rows.

When a settled turn contains terminal text, a summary === null work row with reasoning and a deliberate terminal tool fails isPersistentTurnRow because every(...) requires every entry to be a terminal tool. foldTurnGroup then places the row in the collapsed fold. Preserve the terminal entry when building rowsInsideFold.

terminal entry is preserved when constructing rowsInsideFold while retaining
existing behavior for fully collapsible rows.
