What & why

Closes #655.

Selecting the models.dev-only “Claude Fable 5.1” row showed “The provider decides” without an effort slider, although the installed Claude ACP adapter advertised adjustable effort for claude-fable-5-1[1m].

Three production boundaries lost the information: Claude identity mapping could collapse an exact minor version into an older curated model, and ACP catalog discovery retained only the model option without selecting each model to acquire its effort profile. Real application QA then exposed launch seeding ANTHROPIC_MODEL with the logical ID while ACP negotiated its context transport ID, changing the adapter advertisement and rejecting that binding. The active composer also ignored session config-option changes, while configuration writes accepted a successful RPC without matching current-value readback.

This change:

  • Preserves exact Claude versions and private context-window transport bindings. Alias mapping requires one matching advertised version; provider default is no longer inferred from the configured model. Stored selections and favorites keep their original IDs.
  • Selects each advertised model in a disposable ACP session and persists its own options, including standard thought_level categories and future effort strings. Observed absence supersedes static levels; provider default remains distinct. Discovery failure preserves the last successful catalog generation.
  • Seeds native Claude with the same validated transport selected by ACP while preserving the logical public identity. Logical unbound resumes defer catalog validation to the actual next prompt, matching initial acceptance.
  • Requires the returned current value to acknowledge a model/effort/option write before treating it as applied.
  • Distinguishes unconfirmed reasoning capability in the selector. The composer derives eligible live effort controls only for the effective model, separately from pending/queued prompt intent. Dedicated thought-level options are excluded from advanced-option duplicates.

PR #579's real-provider evidence covered Codex, Cursor and OpenCode, not this Claude discovery/negotiation path. Its valid regressions remain intact.

Authored and tested by OpenAI Codex (GPT-6 Astra). This PR remains blocked on real application QA; it is not a delivery-complete claim. CI is green for de400956b6748dc20a99e379aa1f824afb2ba702, and CodeRabbit, Greptile and React Doctor have completed coverage of that head. The accepted application-QA finding remains unresolved.

How you verified it

  • Focused race tests for modelcatalog source discovery and ACP inspection/configuration pass. New regressions cover exact versions, per-model profiles, absent effort, provider defaults and unacknowledged configuration.
  • Focused ACP subprocess + SQLite integration passes, including account isolation and model-specific option/effort recovery through a fresh catalog service. Focused SQLite binding reopen and previous-schema migration tests verify lossless identity/intent preservation.
  • Root Turborepo focused Web run: 119 tests pass across catalog mapping, rendered selector and prompt-runtime hydration. Changed-file formatting/lint passes; React Doctor passes final head de400956b with no new issues.
  • Installed Claude Code 2.1.266 and official ACP adapter 0.78.0: exact Fable 5.1 selection advertised low/medium/high/xhigh/max; low then high were acknowledged; a real prompt completed with end_turn and provider usage identifying claude-fable-5-1. Haiku removed effort. This is direct transport evidence, not a substitute for the application walk.
  • The isolated application renders five advertised stops for Fable 5.1, keeps Fable 5 distinct, and preserves Low and its favorite through browser reload and lab-daemon restart. Rendered evidence. Failed discovery preserves the previous valid rows with an explicit stale warning. Application prompt acknowledgement and recovery remain blocked by account HTTP 429; selected intent remains unapplied. Model switching preserves a valid Low, clears effort for Haiku, and restores the Fable default; rapid accepted Max persists after reload. The narrow viewport also passes (evidence). The rendered walk used Web fac7fe1 with the isolated daemon built through 5511164; later empty/unknown backend semantics have focused coverage. The final-binary successful prompt, real queued-prompt and recovery walk remain blocked. A minimal adapter-only control independently confirmed the account Fable usage limit; the latest application retry also returned a native authentication-resolution failure.
  • Living QA report and existing scenario updates track remaining acceptance evidence.

Execution constraint: the user explicitly requires heavy gates, full builds/typechecks/lint/test suites and delivery checks in GitHub CI, not locally. Local work used focused tests, changed-file lint and one incremental executable solely for the isolated application walkthrough. make gate/make gate-full were not run locally. The final-head CI run is green. Across the PR there are 33 successful checks, zero failures/pending checks and zero check annotations; 17 conditional release/nightly checks are legitimately skipped. Heavy local gates were not substituted for this evidence.

Review disposition: CodeRabbit approved the final head (review 5227551749), with function documentation coverage at 80.49%. Greptile reviewed 53 files with no new comments; its existing application-QA finding remains accepted and unresolved. React Doctor passed. All other actionable findings, including minor naming and documentation warnings, are fixed; the reviewer explicitly withdrew invalid matrix/snapshot and stale-capability suggestions. Complete disposition record.

The remaining step is a successful final-binary Fable application prompt with selected-effort acknowledgement, queued prompts and recovery after native authentication and Fable capacity are available. The isolated lab was cleanly stopped and its evidence retained. No merge is authorized.

Impact

Model catalog and session-runtime behavior changes across Web, CLI, native tools and HTTP/UDS. Routes, tool IDs and config keys are unchanged. Additive reasoning_known and reasoning_apply fields distinguish observed capability from permission to negotiate; OpenAPI, Web types and Go/TypeScript SDK artifacts were regenerated. Provider apply strategies, authoritative configuration matrices, account/profile/workspace isolation and failure visibility remain enforced.

Additive global migration 00120 retains every existing binding and selection while adding a validated per-transport option snapshot; no manual cache repair. Saved exact model selections are not silently upgraded to another version. Refreshing the affected source replaces old discovery results through the existing lifecycle. A distinct version absent from the account's advertisement fails negotiation explicitly.

Updated the model-catalog site documentation, official Compozy runtime-operation skill, canonical QA scenarios and cross-surface audit. No host-runtime update/restart or merge is part of this work.

  • make gate passes locally; this PR is delivered only after its required CI checks are green
  • New or changed behavior is covered by tests, or I explained above why not
  • If an agent wrote or co-wrote this, I named it above and verified the result myself

Walkthrough

The change adds per-model ACP inspection and confirmation, preserves exact Claude transport identities, stores transport configuration snapshots, and propagates reasoning metadata through catalog, session, persistence, and runtime-selector layers.

Changes

ACP inspection and confirmation

Layer / File(s) Summary
ACP inspection and confirmation
internal/acp/*.go, internal/acp/*test.go
ACP inspection records options for each selectable model. Configuration state changes only after provider confirmation. Tests cover isolated options, rejected selections, and preserved prior effort.

Canonical identity and catalog discovery

Canonical identity and ACP catalog discovery
internal/modelcatalog/claude_model_rows.go, internal/modelcatalog/live_sources_acp.go, internal/modelcatalog/live_sources_test.go
Claude transport IDs retain exact versions and avoid ambiguous label matches. ACP discovery returns per-model options and applies reasoning metadata to catalog rows.

Catalog merge and persistence

Layer / File(s) Summary
Catalog merge and persistence validation
internal/modelcatalog/*, internal/api/*, internal/store/globaldb/*, sdk/go/contracts/*
Model reasoning metadata and transport configuration snapshots flow through merges, public contracts, SQLite storage, migration, and reload tests.

Runtime reasoning state and selector presentation

Explanation

The PR addresses the main coding objectives in #655. It preserves exact Claude identities and transport bindings, discovers per-model ACP options, persists observed empty snapshots, retains future effort values, distinguishes unknown and provider-managed reasoning, validates configuration acknowledgement, and updates selector and prompt-runtime hydration. The automated coverage includes ACP inspection, persistence and migration, account isolation, model switching, reload behavior, selector rendering, runtime updates, and queued-state handling. The remaining coding requirement is not complete: #655 requires an isolated Fable 5.1 walkthrough that proves selected effort submission to the actual Claude transport and acknowledgement through effective configuration readback, including recovery behavior. The evidence states that real adapter testing proved effort levels and prompt completion, but application-level acknowledgement and recovery remain blocked by HTTP 429 and authentication failures, and the selected effort is not marked applied.

Resolution

Complete and document the isolated Fable 5.1 application-level walkthrough. Prove selected-effort transport submission, configuration readback acknowledgement, failure recovery, reopening, and model-change behavior. If the installed adapter cannot provide the capability, prove that limitation at the supported boundary and report the unresolved limitation without marking the effort as applied.

Summary

This PR repairs exact Claude model identity and model-specific ACP reasoning discovery across catalog persistence, session negotiation, generated contracts, and the Web runtime selector.

  • Preserves logical model identities while retaining exact transport bindings and per-model option snapshots.
  • Inspects each advertised ACP model and requires provider readback before treating configuration as applied.
  • Carries confirmed reasoning capability and application policy through API and generated client types.
  • Hydrates live reasoning controls for the effective session model while preserving pending prompt intent.
  • Adds migration, integration, selector, persistence, and negotiation coverage.
  • The required final application-level prompt, queued-prompt, and recovery QA remains blocked and explicitly incomplete.

Validate selections against the matching transport snapshot.

row.ConfigOptions contains only the preferred transport projection. Each binding now has its own ConfigOptions snapshot. When a non-preferred binding supports an option that the preferred binding does not, this call validates the binding selection against the wrong descriptor set and can reject the source update.

Pass row.TransportBindings[index].ConfigOptions to normalizeModelCatalogBindingSelections.

Move default-runtime resolution out of this effect.

runtimeValueFromEffective returns a new object on each call. When an effective provider exists, ordinary rerenders can therefore rerun this effect and dispatch defaultRuntimeResolved again. defaultRuntimeResolved compares values with sameValue and returns no state update for equal values, so this does not create an update loop. It still performs a redundant dispatch and violates the repository rule that useEffect is only for external-system synchronization, not derived state or event responses.

Resolve the defaults in the store input/change path instead of synchronizing them from this effect.

Isolated application evidence: exact Fable 5.1 is selected in the full list and recent/favorites, starred, with Low retained after browser reload and a lab-daemon restart. Fable 5 remains a separate identity. The stale-source banner is intentional: discovery returned account HTTP 429 and preserved the last valid capability snapshot.

Fable 5.1 selected and favorited with Low effort after reload; stale catalog warning remains visible

The installed adapter separately acknowledged low/high and completed a real Fable 5.1 prompt. The application prompt still fails explicitly on the account's HTTP 429; selected Low is not represented as applied. Full application recovery and final-head CI/review evidence remain pending.

@coderabbitai Please assess the explicit dispositions below, especially the distinction between matrix coordinates and post-selection ACP controls.

Follow-up on review 5226811054 (including its collapsed/out-of-diff findings):

  • Binding-selection validation (major): after tracing the released extension contract, the proposed replacement is not valid. ModelSourceRow.ConfigOptions declares the logical configuration-matrix dimensions; ModelSourceTransportBinding.OptionSelections selects a supported transport using those dimensions. The newly stored binding ConfigOptions is the ACP control snapshot after that transport is selected. These are different domains. Live ACP discovery does not create OptionSelections; extension mappings do not expose the new per-binding snapshot field. See internal/extension/contract/model_source.go and modelSourceTransportBindings in internal/extension/model_source_options.go. Existing SQLite foreign keys deliberately preserve the logical coordinate contract. The round-trip regression now includes a context=standard matrix coordinate and a separate post-selection effort=low control, preserving both without weakening any constraint. Proposed disposition: invalid cross-domain validation; comments clarify ownership. Please confirm.
  • Default-runtime effect (nitpick): the redundant object dependency is removed: synchronization now depends on the server agent/effective input, and derives the default inside the effect. This effect synchronizes the external XState store consumed by imperative prompt snapshots, consistent with React's external-system effect contract: https://react.dev/reference/react/useEffect. It does not mirror local React derived state. Removing the synchronization would leave getSessionPromptRuntimeSnapshot stale. The canonical hook tests pass; this remains subject to the next React Doctor run.
  • Generated contract coverage: the current-head GitHub Preflight (codegen + installer + language) check passed at 5511164: https://github.com/compozy/compozy/actions/runs/35134230514. It independently verifies regeneration, including excluded OpenAPI/Web/SDK generated files. No generated contract changes are planned in the follow-up batch.
  • Docstring warning: added behavioral documentation to touched production and canonical test functions; awaiting the next coverage result, not claiming the threshold passed yet.

# Claude Fable 5.1 reasoning — issue 655

Status: implementation and isolated application QA in progress. Not delivery evidence yet.

P2 Required QA Remains Pending

This report still marks application verification as in progress and says live prompt acknowledgement, model switching, and successful recovery remain unverified. The repository requires affected user-visible QA scenarios to be updated and verified before delivery, so this requirement must be satisfied before merging.

Context Used: CLAUDE.md (source)

Agreed; this acceptance requirement remains open and the PR must not be delivered or merged yet. The isolated app now verifies full/recent/favorite selection, Low preservation on a Sonnet switch, clearing effort for Haiku, restoring Fable's advertised default, and persistence of a rapidly accepted Max selection after reload. The real prompt still lacks a successful application-level reply.

A minimal control using the same installed official Claude adapter, exact Fable 5.1, and no CompozyOS system context/MCP servers acknowledged Low, then rejected the prompt with errorKind=rate_limit: “You've reached your Fable limit.” This confirms an account-level external blocker independently of application configuration. We are preserving the failure and selected intent; no alternate model or mocked response is counted as completion. Successful application prompt/recovery and queued-prompt walkthrough remain pending until Fable capacity returns. This thread stays unresolved.

Additional isolated rendered walkthrough on code head fac7fe1:

  • Fable 5.1 Low → Sonnet 5 retained Low; selecting Haiku cleared effort and removed the slider; selecting the Fable favorite restored its advertised High default.
  • From Low, rapid End/Home/ArrowRight input accepted Max and temporarily disabled further selection during persistence. Public readback and browser reload retained Max (no out-of-order replacement).
  • At a 390×844 viewport, the 320-pixel picker stays inside the viewport without horizontal page overflow, and the reasoning control remains visible.
Fable 5.1 selected and favorited with its reasoning slider at Max in a narrow viewport

Provider acknowledgement through the application and the real queued-prompt/recovery walk remain incomplete. The direct minimal adapter control confirmed the account's Fable usage limit; a later application retry also returned a native authentication-resolution failure. The application retains selected intent without claiming it was applied.

@coderabbitai review

The final documentation head is 9f8c20f; production code is unchanged from fac7fe1. The last completed review still covers 5511164, while the fac7fe1 processing marker disappeared after the documentation push and no completed review of that code was published. Please complete coverage of the unreviewed remediation, including empty-snapshot preservation, absent-policy semantics, hook simplification and touched-function documentation.

Please also explicitly assess the two out-of-diff/nitpick dispositions in #658 (comment). We are retaining the real-provider QA blocker and are not asking for a delivery-complete or merge approval.

@pedronauck Confirmed. The binding-selection finding was based on an incorrect cross-domain assumption.

  • ModelSourceRow.ConfigOptions defines logical configuration-matrix coordinates.
  • ModelSourceTransportBinding.OptionSelections selects a transport binding through those coordinates.
  • The new ModelTransportBinding.ConfigOptions field stores the ACP control snapshot after transport selection.
  • internal/extension/model_source_options.go validates OptionSelections against the row-level matrix options.
  • internal/store/globaldb/global_db_model_catalog_bindings.go keeps that validation and persists the ACP snapshot separately as config_options_json.
  • Live ACP discovery populates binding ConfigOptions only. It does not create OptionSelections.

The existing foreign keys correctly apply to matrix selections. They must not validate post-selection ACP controls. The context=standard and effort=low round-trip case preserves the required separation. I withdraw the binding-selection validation finding.

The default-runtime effect disposition is also valid. The effect writes server-derived defaults into the external XState store. getSessionPromptRuntimeSnapshot reads that store outside React rendering. The effect is therefore required. The derived-object dependencies were removed. The effect now derives defaults from agent and input.effectiveRuntime inside the effect. This avoids the prior redundant dependency issue. The current-head react-doctor check is successful.

The cited Preflight (codegen, installer, product language) job passed for 551116428139e543609ed4c843e6f355ee9cc327. It completed generated-artifact verification successfully. The overall CI workflow failed in a separate Go race-test shard, so the successful Preflight job is valid code-generation evidence but not evidence of an all-green workflow.

The added comments describe the changed ownership, discovery, persistence, and synchronization behavior. The documentation warning does not require another code change from this review. I cannot confirm a coverage threshold from the supplied evidence. The current-head CI coverage remains in progress.

@pedronauck Completed the remediation review for 9f8c20f142353b492944b1c277e470ce4a55db80. I found no new blocking issue in the requested scope.

  • Empty snapshots: nil remains “unobserved.” An empty non-nil ConfigOptions slice remains “observed with no adjustable options.” The clone, normalization, SQLite JSON round-trip, and merge paths preserve this distinction. An observed empty preferred binding clears lower-priority effort metadata.
  • Absent policy: applyEffectiveReasoningProfile now distinguishes an absent MergeOptions.ReasoningApply entry from an explicit false entry. Only explicit false produces reasoning_apply: "none" and marks provider-managed capability as known.
  • Hook simplification: The useSessionPromptRuntime effect remains necessary. It updates SessionPromptRuntimeStore, and getSessionPromptRuntimeSnapshot reads that store outside React rendering. The effect now derives defaults from agent and input.effectiveRuntime inside the effect. This removes the redundant derived-object dependencies.
  • Documentation: The changed function comments describe ownership and behavior. The QA documents correctly mark provider acknowledgement, queued prompts, and recovery as blocked verification. They do not claim completion.

I also explicitly confirm both prior dispositions:

  1. Binding-selection validation: Withdrawn. ModelSourceRow.ConfigOptions and ModelTransportBinding.ConfigOptions have separate domains. OptionSelections must validate against row-level matrix coordinates. Binding-level ConfigOptions is the inspected ACP control snapshot after transport selection. I used the previously clarified contract distinction for this assessment.
  2. Default-runtime effect: Withdrawn. The synchronization is for the external prompt-runtime store. Removing it would permit stale imperative snapshots.

react-doctor and the code-generation preflight are successful at the reviewed head. Other CI jobs remain in progress. The real-provider QA blocker remains valid and is not treated as delivery-complete evidence.

Review disposition for de400956b6748dc20a99e379aa1f824afb2ba702:

  • CodeRabbit completed the incremental review and approved this head (review 5227551749). Per-binding profiles, explicit capability provenance, empty-catalog hydration, observed-empty persistence, absent apply policy, and test naming findings are fixed with canonical regression coverage. All CodeRabbit inline threads are resolved. Function documentation coverage is now 80.49%, passing the configured 80% threshold.
  • CodeRabbit explicitly withdrew the configuration-matrix validation suggestion after confirming that logical option coordinates and post-selection ACP snapshots have distinct contracts; existing SQLite foreign keys remain intact. It also confirmed the corrected external-store effect and withdrew the proposal to keep stale effort levels when a complete ACP snapshot removes the thought-level option.
  • Greptile reviewed this head (53 files, zero new comments). Its existing application QA finding is accepted and unresolved. CodeRabbit's linked-issue warning points to the same outstanding acceptance evidence.
  • React Doctor passed this head with zero annotations/new issues. The previous hook complexity finding is fixed.

The remaining real-provider gap is not waived: the isolated application must successfully submit Fable 5.1 with the selected effort, confirm effective configuration, and exercise queued prompts/recovery with the final binary. A minimal official-adapter control independently confirmed the account Fable usage limit; the latest application retry also encountered native authentication resolution failure. The inspected rendered selector, persistence, model-switch and narrow-viewport evidence do not substitute for that final walk.

The isolated lab has been cleanly stopped and its evidence retained. No operator session or host daemon was restarted. This PR remains open and must not be delivered or merged as complete until the real-provider acceptance gap is closed.
