NOT LGTM. The code is fine, but the commit trailer and the rationale have to change before this lands in main.
mattia-eleuteri I rebased the branch onto current main. The only conflict was the generated packages/system/postgres-rd/cozyrds/postgres.yaml, so I took main's file and regenerated it with make generate (cozyvalues-gen v1.7.0, the version CI pins). Your change itself is the same as before, and all 146 chart tests pass.
Business context: tenants want preloaded modules like pg_stat_statements, and the shared_preload_libraries parameter stays blocked because it accepts a path.
Blockers
B1: model name in a commit trailer
The commit carries Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <[email protected]> next to Assisted-by: LLM. The repo takes exactly one Assisted-by: LLM trailer and no model or vendor names (docs/agents/contributing.md). The repo merges with merge commits, so this trailer would land in main as is. Please drop the Co-Authored-By line and keep Assisted-by: LLM.
B2: three of the four modules are already reachable
The commit message and the PR body say the block makes pg_stat_statements, auto_explain, pgaudit and pg_prewarm unreachable. For three of them that is not true. CloudNativePG has a managed extensions list in pkg/postgres/configuration.go (ManagedExtensions, checked on v1.30.0, the operator version in this repo). If any user parameter starts with pg_stat_statements., auto_explain. or pgaudit., the operator adds that library to shared_preload_libraries itself, and for pg_stat_statements and pgaudit it also runs CREATE EXTENSION. The chart already passes such keys through: on main, postgresql.parameters."pg_stat_statements.track": all renders straight into spec.postgresql.parameters. Only pg_prewarm has no path today.
The field can still be worth having. It is an explicit switch, and it covers pg_prewarm. But the commit body and the PR body both end up in main, so the reason they give has to be correct. Please rewrite them to say what is really new here: pg_prewarm, and preloading without setting a tuning parameter. A line in the sharedPreloadLibraries description about the existing route would also help, because a tenant who removes a module from the list while a pg_stat_statements.* parameter is set will still have it preloaded.
Non-blocking
- The template allowlist check in
db.yamlis not pinned by any test. I replaced its condition withfalseand all 146 tests stayed green. helm-unittest always validates the schema, so the enum rejects bad values before the template check runs. This is fine as a backstop, but the comment above it is the only thing that says it works. - I checked the images this chart uses.
ghcr.io/cloudnative-pg/postgresql:13.22and:18.1, the oldest and newest tags infiles/versions.yaml, both have all four.sofiles in$libdir. - "Changing the list restarts PostgreSQL" is correct. It would help to say that the primary restarts too, so writes stop for a short time.
shared_preload_libraries is blocked in postgresql.parameters, and rightly so: the parameter is free text and accepts a path, so it can point at a writable location such as the PGDATA volume. What the block leaves is an indirect route. CloudNativePG preloads pg_stat_statements, auto_explain and pgaudit by itself as soon as a parameter under their prefix is set, such as pg_stat_statements.track, so enabling one of them today means setting one of its tuning parameters, even to its default value. pg_prewarm has no route at all, and its autoprewarm worker only runs when the module is preloaded. postgresql.sharedPreloadLibraries is the explicit switch. It is a closed enum of four module names that already ship in the CloudNativePG PostgreSQL image, rendered onto the CNPG Cluster field of the same meaning, which the operator merges with the libraries it preloads on its own. A bare name can only resolve inside $libdir, which sits on the read-only image filesystem, and dynamic_library_path stays blocked, so no path can be introduced. The blocklist on postgresql.parameters is left untouched. The template repeats the enum as a backstop for renders that skip schema validation. helm-unittest always validates the schema and never reaches it, so a bats suite renders with --skip-schema-validation to keep the backstop, and its agreement with the enum, under test. Verified on a live CloudNativePG 1.27.3 cluster: with the field set, the operator writes shared_preload_libraries into postgresql.conf, SHOW reports the modules, and pg_stat_statements returns rows. Changing the list restarts PostgreSQL on every instance, the primary included, through the instance manager and without restarting the pod. Aleksei Sviridkin (@lexfrei) addressed in 25cdd51, force-pushed as a single commit on the same base you rebased onto, since B1 needs the commit message rewritten. B1: the B2: confirmed against Non-blocking 1: added Non-blocking 3: the description now says the restart covers every instance, the primary included, so writes pause briefly. Regenerated with cozyvalues-gen v1.7.0; all 146 chart tests pass. |

mattia-eleuteri LGTM. The trailer and the rationale are fixed. The new bats goes red when I disable the template check or add or drop a name in the template list.

What this PR does
postgresql.sharedPreloadLibraries, a closed enum of four module names that already ship in the CloudNativePG PostgreSQL image, rendered onto the CNPGClusterfield of the same meaning.shared_preload_librariesentry in thepostgresql.parametersblocklist exactly as it is.tests/shared_preload_libraries_test.yaml: absent by default, single and multiple libraries, no interference withparameters, schema rejection of a non-allowlisted name and of an absolute path, and the parameter blocklist still firing when the allowlist is in use.hack/check-postgres-preload-allowlist.bats, which renders the chart with--skip-schema-validationto exercise the template-side allowlist that helm-unittest never reaches, and checks that it matches the schema enum.shared_preload_librariesis blocked inpostgresql.parameters, and rightly so: the parameter is free text and accepts a path, so it can point at a writable location such as the PGDATA volume. The block does not make every preloadable module unreachable, though. CloudNativePG carries a managed extensions list (ManagedExtensionsinpkg/postgres/configuration.go, checked on v1.30.0, the operator version in this repo): as soon as a parameter under thepg_stat_statements.,auto_explain.orpgaudit.prefix is set, the operator adds that library toshared_preload_librariesitself, and forpg_stat_statementsandpgauditit also runsCREATE EXTENSION. The chart already passes such keys through, sopostgresql.parameters."pg_stat_statements.track": allworks on main today. What this PR adds is narrower than a missing capability.
pg_prewarmhas no route at all, and its autoprewarm worker only runs when the module is preloaded. For the other three, the field is an explicit switch that does not require setting one of their tuning parameters, even to its default value, just to get the library loaded. The two routes combine rather than override: the operator merges this list with the libraries it preloads on its own, so removing a module fromsharedPreloadLibrariesdoes not unload it while a parameter under its prefix is still set. The field description says so.The distinction this PR draws is between a library name and a library path. Nothing needs to be injected to preload these four:
pg_stat_statements.so,auto_explain.so,pgaudit.soandpg_prewarm.soare already in$libdirin the image, and that directory is on the read-only root filesystem, so it cannot be written to.dynamic_library_pathstays blocked, so$libdirremains the only search path. A bare name from a fixed enum therefore has no way to reach code that is not already in the image, which is the property the blanket block was protecting. The enum in
values.schema.jsonis the primary guard and rejects a bad value before rendering starts. The template carries the same list as a backstop for renders that bypass schema validation, using the existing fail-fastSECURITY:idiom from the parameter blocklist a few lines below it. helm-unittest validates the schema on every render, so it never reaches that backstop; the bats suite renders with--skip-schema-validationinstead. I checked that it fails when the template condition is replaced withfalse, and when the template list gains a name the enum does not have.I verified the mechanism end to end on a live CloudNativePG 1.27.3 cluster rather than assuming it: with
spec.postgresql.shared_preload_librariesset, the operator writesshared_preload_libraries = 'pg_stat_statements'intopostgresql.conf,SHOW shared_preload_librariesreports it, andSELECT ... FROM pg_stat_statementsreturns rows. Adding a second module to the list took effect too, and the CNPG instance manager restarts PostgreSQL in place for it, with no pod restart. That restart covers every instance, the primary included, so writes pause briefly. The CRD documents the field as additive to the operator's own defaults, so this does not clobber anything CNPG needs to preload itself.Scope note: the four names are the modules in the image that are useful to a tenant and safe to preload. Anything requiring a background worker or a shipped-but-privileged module was deliberately left out, and the enum is the single place to extend if that changes.

Downstream repositories
packages/apps/postgres/values.schema.jsongains a field, which per the trigger map reachescozystack/terraform-provider-cozystack: its postgres resource carries a hand-maintained schema and its own expand/flatten pair, with no codegen fromvalues.schema.json, sosharedPreloadLibrarieswill be invisible to Terraform users until it is added there by hand. The enum matters twice over there, because the provider restates enums asstringvalidator.OneOflists. I searched that repository and found no open PR or issue covering it (the only open PR is a dependabot Go module bump). I have not filed the follow-up, so I am leaving the box unticked rather than claiming work that does not exist. The same gap applies tousers.<name>.createRolein #3505; one follow-up there can cover both fields.I walked the rest of the map against the diff and found nothing else: no package is added, renamed or removed, no existing version enum changes, no default changes,
release.prefixand the output Secret and Service names are untouched, and no CRD outside the regeneratedpackages/system/postgres-rd/cozyrds/postgres.yamlis affected. TheREADME.mdparameter table is regenerated here and postgres is already in the website generator's app list, so the website path stays automated.Release note
