What this PR does

Fixes #3519.

Raises the memory limit of every kubectl-apply container in these charts from 256Mi to 512Mi. requests.memory stays at 64Mi throughout.

  • packages/apps/kubernetes-nodes/templates/talos-reconcile-job.yaml — the Job talos-reconcile Job is OOMKilled at 256Mi and never completes #3519 reports.
  • packages/apps/kubernetes/templates/talos/bootstrap-token-tenant-job.yaml — the post-install,post-upgrade hook Job.
  • packages/apps/kubernetes/templates/oidc-rbac-job.yaml — the bootstrap container.

Adds a unit suite pinning the reconcile Job's floor, and refreshes the two content-hash Job-name fixtures the change rotates.

Scope changed since this PR opened

The talos-reconcile Job moved out of packages/apps/kubernetes and into the kubernetes-nodes chart when worker node pools were split out, and the move carried the 256Mi limit with it. The reported failure is therefore still reachable on main, and the fix now lands in the new location.

Two things followed from that. The talos.reconcileJobMemoryLimit value this PR originally added is gone: it parameterised a Job that now lives in a different chart, and a knob that has to be declared in two places to cover one Job is worth adding only once a deployment is shown to need more than the floor. Happy to add it back if maintainers would rather have the escape hatch up front. And with no new schema field, the terraform-provider-cozystack follow-up this PR previously claimed no longer applies — the box is unticked below.

Why 512Mi

kubectl apply builds an in-memory model of the target API surface before it can compute a patch: full discovery plus the aggregated OpenAPI document. On a Cozystack management cluster that spans several hundred CRDs, and it does not fit in 256Mi. On the reporter's v1.6.0 cluster the container was OOMKilled at exitCode: 137 part-way through the script — it got as far as the KamajiControlPlane certSANs patch and died before the TalosConfigTemplate apply, so nothing downstream of that point ever ran.

The failure was also silent: restartPolicy: OnFailure with backoffLimit: 30 keeps respawning the container while the Job-level status stays active, so the only symptom is a pod with a growing restart count (restarts=8 when observed).

512Mi is a floor, not a measured peak. I have not profiled kubectl's actual RSS, so the claim is that 512Mi clears the reported failure with headroom, not that it is provably sufficient everywhere. The container is short-lived and the request stays at 64Mi, so the headroom costs nothing in scheduling terms; it counts against a tenant ResourceQuota on limits.memory only for the Job's lifetime.

Jobs deliberately left alone

The cleanup container in oidc-rbac-job.yaml stays at 128Mi: it only runs kubectl delete --selector, which does not load the aggregated OpenAPI document. Other 256Mi hits in the repo are long-running Deployments and upstream chart defaults, not short-lived kubectl Jobs.

Upgrade behaviour

The bootstrap-token Job carries a content hash of its rendered spec in its name, so changing the memory limit rotates that name: the next reconcile creates a fresh Job and Helm prunes the superseded one. The fresh Job re-applies a byte-identical payload, which is a no-op and does not roll existing workers. For clusters currently stuck in the OOM loop this is the desired effect — the new Job runs the script to completion, including the apply the old one never reached.

Validation

Rebased onto main at a1b32f2e5.

  • helm unittest packages/apps/kubernetes-nodes: 82 pass, 12 snapshots. helm unittest packages/apps/kubernetes: 150 pass.
  • The new suite is a real guard, not a restatement: reverting the limit to 256Mi fails it with Expected to equal: 512Mi / Actual: 256Mi, and it passes again once restored.
  • make generate in both packages is a no-op on this branch — no generated artefact needs updating, since the change is template-only.
  • make unit-tests is not runnable on macOS: bats-unit-nightly-mirror_test dies on hack/nightly-mirror.sh, which assumes GNU sed. That file is byte-identical to main on this branch, so the failure is not this change; CI runs Linux.

Not validated: no cluster deployment and no RSS measurement.

Downstream repositories

Walked the trigger map against the diff. The change is four template files and one test file, with no schema, no CRD, no values field, no image reference and no CI behaviour touched, so nothing downstream restates it. The terraform-provider-cozystack issue this PR linked before (#19) was triggered by the talos.reconcileJobMemoryLimit schema field, which this revision no longer adds; the issue stands on its own and is no longer a follow-up to this PR.

Release note

fix(kubernetes): raise the memory limit of the kubectl helper Jobs from 256Mi to 512Mi. The talos-reconcile Job was OOMKilled mid-run at 256Mi, dying after the KamajiControlPlane certSANs patch but before the TalosConfigTemplate apply, and retried invisibly because the Job status stays `active` under `restartPolicy: OnFailure`.

Explanation

Issue #3519 targets the talos-reconcile Job. This PR also changes the bootstrap-token-tenant and oidc-bootstrap kubectl containers from 256Mi to 512Mi. Those changes do not implement the reported talos-reconcile failure and are not controlled by talos.reconcileJobMemoryLimit. Their related fixture updates support these additional Job changes.

Test hash rotation for the memory override.

The template hashes the rendered Job spec, and reconcileJobMemoryLimit is part of that spec. This test verifies only the rendered limit. Add a name assertion for the 1Gi render so a regression that removes the memory value from the hashed spec cannot pass.

Note for reviewers: this PR overlaps two siblings from the same batch

These five PRs came out of one production upgrade and were written in parallel, so three files are touched twice.
Flagging it here rather than letting the second merge surprise someone:

No functional interaction is expected in either case; the collisions are textual. Happy to rebase this branch onto
whichever of the three you merge first.

The chart's kubectl-apply containers were capped at 256Mi and got
OOMKilled (exit 137) part-way through their scripts. Under
restartPolicy: OnFailure the pod respawned while the Job-level status
stayed active, which made the failure invisible apart from a growing
restart count.

kubectl apply loads full discovery plus the aggregated OpenAPI document
of the target apiserver before it can compute a patch, and on a
Cozystack management cluster that spans several hundred CRDs. 256Mi is
below the working set. Raise the floor to 512Mi on the three affected
containers: the talos-reconcile Job in kubernetes-nodes, which is the
one cozystack#3519 reports, plus bootstrap-token-tenant and oidc-bootstrap in
the parent chart.

The talos-reconcile Job moved to the kubernetes-nodes chart with the
worker node pools after this branch opened, and the move carried the
256Mi limit with it, so the reported failure is still reachable on
main. The knob this change first carried, talos.reconcileJobMemoryLimit,
is not reintroduced: 512Mi is the floor, and a value that has to be
declared in two charts to cover one Job is worth adding only once a
deployment is shown to need it.

The bootstrap-token Job is named by a content hash of its rendered spec,
so the new limit rotates the name and the pinned fixtures move with it.

Rebased onto main at a1b32f2e5, and the rebase turned up something that changes this PR, so the body is rewritten rather than merely refreshed.

The talos-reconcile Job this PR is about no longer exists in packages/apps/kubernetes: it moved into the kubernetes-nodes chart when worker node pools were split out. The move carried the 256Mi limit with it, so #3519 is still reachable on main and the fix now lands in the new location, alongside the two Jobs in the parent chart that were always in scope.

Two consequences worth flagging before review. talos.reconcileJobMemoryLimit is gone — it parameterised a Job that now lives in another chart, and declaring the same knob in two charts to cover one Job seemed worth doing only once a deployment is shown to need more than the floor; say the word and I will add it back. And with no new schema field, the terraform-provider-cozystack follow-up this PR used to claim no longer applies, so that box is unticked.

The new reconcile_job_memory_test.yaml is a real guard: reverting the limit to 256Mi fails it, and it passes again once restored. 82 tests pass in kubernetes-nodes, 150 in kubernetes, and make generate is a no-op in both since the change is template-only.

Ready for review.

Expose and propagate talos.reconcileJobMemoryLimit. The chart has no supported operator setting. Add talos.reconcileJobMemoryLimit with a 512Mi default to the API and chart values, propagate it through the parent-to-chart path, render it as the Job's memory limit, and add a test with a non-default override. The Job loads management-cluster discovery and aggregated OpenAPI data before applying TalosConfigTemplate; if a larger cluster needs more than 512Mi, the fixed limit can OOM-kill the Job and leave reconciliation incomplete.

mattia-eleuteri NOT LGTM. The 512Mi change is right, but the commit message, two code comments and the PR body say things that are not true of the change as it would land.

Business context: the talos-reconcile Job in kubernetes-nodes is OOMKilled at 256Mi and keeps restarting under restartPolicy: OnFailure, so the TalosConfigTemplate apply never runs (#3519).

What I checked. A trial merge of 479d966 onto current main (717d091) is clean, and all three containers still render at 512Mi there. No other kubectl Job in kubernetes or kubernetes-nodes is left at 256Mi: pre-delete-unpin, delete.yaml and the oidc cleanup container sit at 128Mi and run delete or patch, not apply. helm unittest on the merged tree passes in both charts. Putting the reconcile limit back to 256Mi fails the new suite, and doing the same to bootstrap-token fails both hash fixtures. I'm fine with 512Mi as an unmeasured floor: the OOM at 256Mi is observed, and the request stays at 64Mi.

What needs to change:

  1. The third paragraph of the commit message tells the history of this branch ("after this branch opened", "The knob this change first carried, talos.reconcileJobMemoryLimit, is not reintroduced"). That knob never existed on main, so a reader of git log has nothing to attach it to. docs/agents/contributing.md (Commit Format and Review Blockers) rules this out. Please drop the paragraph. The first two paragraphs already give the reason.

  2. The new comments in oidc-rbac-job.yaml and bootstrap-token-tenant-job.yaml say "At 256Mi it is OOMKilled at exit 137" as if it was observed. The only observed OOM is the talos-reconcile Job, and the PR body says no RSS was measured. The bootstrap-token container talks only to the tenant apiserver through the admin kubeconfig (automountServiceAccountToken: false), and that API surface is much smaller than the management cluster's. Please reword both comments to say the limit is raised as headroom to match the reconcile Job, or drop them.

  3. The PR body becomes the merge commit message, and two things in it are wrong. It calls bootstrap-token-tenant-job.yaml "the post-install,post-upgrade hook Job", but that Job is a main-phase resource and already was at a1b32f2; its header comment explains why it left the hook. The hook Job with post-install,post-upgrade is the oidc bootstrap one. The upgrade section also mentions only the bootstrap-token rename. The talos-reconcile Job is named by a hash of its whole spec too ($jobSpec | sha256sum | trunc 6), so every pool gets a new reconcile Job on upgrade and runs it once. That is safe, since the TalosConfigTemplate re-apply is byte-identical and Helm prunes the old Job, but the body should say so.

  4. The oidc bootstrap limit is not covered by any test. With it set back to 256Mi on the merged tree, all tests in packages/apps/kubernetes still pass. The chart already has oidc_test.yaml, so one equal assert on the bootstrap container's limits.memory, like in the new reconcile suite, is enough.

CI on 479d966 is green, but the runs are from 2026-09-21 and E2E (in-tree) was skipped, so this change has not been through e2e.

Closing this as superseded by #4163, merged today. That PR switches the talos-reconcile Job's TalosConfigTemplate apply to --server-side --force-conflicts, which removes the cost this PR was sizing the limit for: on a 438-CRD management cluster, a client-side apply against an existing object peaks at 292Mi, and the server-side apply at 56Mi. The Job now fits the existing 256Mi limit with room to spare, so raising it to 512Mi would fix nothing on main, and the comment this PR adds to talos-reconcile-job.yaml would describe a code path that no longer exists.

The two parent-chart Jobs, bootstrap-token-tenant and oidc bootstrap, were never observed to OOM, as Aleksei Sviridkin (@lexfrei) pointed out. They run a client-side apply against the tenant apiserver, whose API surface is much smaller. If one of them is ever seen OOMKilled, the fix should be the same as #4163, a server-side apply in its own PR, rather than a higher limit.

Thanks Aleksei Sviridkin (@lexfrei) for the review. All four points checked out on a trial merge onto main: with the oidc bootstrap limit set back to 256Mi, all 317 tests in packages/apps/kubernetes still pass, and the PR body was wrong about which Job is the Helm hook and silent about the talos-reconcile Job's rename on upgrade.
