This PR adds hack/sh-posix-parse.bats that parses every file this repo hands to /bin/sh with the shell that will actually execute it.

On workstation /bin/sh is often symlink to bash, on ubuntu runners it is dash. So bash-only construct in file whose shebang says sh runs clean locally and is syntax error in CI, and local run that was meant to catch it is not weaker version of CI but different test.

Cost is not one red test. cozytest.sh translates .bats file and dot-sources result into its own #!/bin/sh process, so whole file is parsed before any test runs and one <(...) anywhere in it kills every test in that file. bats-unit-tests stops at first failing FILE, so every suite alphabetically after it never runs either. One process substitution already cost us whole unit lane.

Whole tree sweeps in about a second, so this class lands in unit lane instead of inside bats step that already gave up.

Covered:

  • *.sh with sh shebang, and *.sh with no shebang at all (every one of them here is hack/e2e-chainsaw/_lib/ helper that chainsaw step dot-sources, so it inherits that step's sh and has no shebang of its own to honour).
  • *.bats, translated exactly the way cozytest.sh translates it, because translated text is what dash parses. Checking raw file would be checking document no shell ever sees, @test "x" { is not shell construct. Last test diffs that translation against one extracted from cozytest.sh itself, so change in runner fails loudly instead of guard silently vouching for text CI no longer parses.

Not covered on purpose, so green run is not read as more than it is. Makefile recipes also run under /bin/sh (make default SHELL, and we set none) but recipe line is full of $(VAR) that shell parser reads as command substitution, so real parse there gives confident nonsense. Chainsaw script: blocks run under sh -c and are extractable, but only with YAML parser this suite would then depend on.

This is syntax check only. Bashism that dash parses happily but runs differently (echo -e, source, $HOSTNAME) passes it, catching those needs checkbashisms which runners don't carry.

Declaring bash is documented way out - #!/usr/bin/env bash shebang opts file out entirely, and in most cases that is right repair.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Tests
    • Added automated checks to detect shell scripts and Bats tests that are invalid under POSIX /bin/sh.
    • Added coverage for common syntax errors, shebang handling, nested paths, vendored scripts, and Bats translation consistency.
    • Added safeguards to ensure the scan runs correctly and reports parsing failures clearly.

On a contributor's workstation /bin/sh is often a symlink to bash; on the
ubuntu-* runners it is dash. A bash-only construct in a file whose
shebang says sh therefore runs clean locally and is a syntax error in
CI, so the local run that was meant to catch it is not a weaker version
of CI but a different test.

The cost is not one red test. cozytest.sh awk-translates a .bats file
and dot-sources the result into its own `#!/bin/sh` process, so the
whole file is parsed before any test runs: one `<(...)` anywhere in it
kills every test in that file. And because bats-unit-tests stops at the
first failing FILE, every suite alphabetically after it never runs
either. One process substitution has cost this project a whole unit
lane.

hack/sh-posix-parse.bats is the cheapest version of that load: it parses
each file with the shell that will execute it and does nothing else. The
whole tree sweeps in about a second, so the class lands in the unit lane
instead of inside a bats step that has already given up.

Two surfaces are covered -- *.sh with an sh shebang or with no shebang
at all (every such file here is a hack/e2e-chainsaw/_lib/ helper that a
Chainsaw step dot-sources, so it inherits that step's sh), and *.bats,
translated exactly the way cozytest.sh translates it, since the
translated text is what dash actually parses. A ninth test diffs that
translation against the one extracted from cozytest.sh itself, so a
change to the runner fails loudly rather than leaving the guard vouching
for text CI no longer parses.

Declaring bash is the documented way out: a `#!/usr/bin/env bash`
shebang opts a file out entirely, which is usually the right repair.

Deliberately not covered, so a green run is not read as more than it is:
Makefile recipes, where `$(VAR)` makes a shell parse yield confident
nonsense, and Chainsaw `script:` blocks, which need a YAML parser this
suite would then depend on. This is also a syntax check only -- a
bashism dash parses but runs differently (`echo -e`, `source`,
`$HOSTNAME`) needs checkbashisms, which the runners do not carry.

The new shell-compatibility check may incorrectly reject valid fish or PowerShell scripts because its shebang matching is too broad. The PR is otherwise mergeable, but this bounded test-enforcement issue needs owner awareness or follow-up.

Restrict the accepted shebang to POSIX-shell interpreter tokens.

The #!*sh* pattern matches #!/usr/bin/fish and #!/usr/bin/pwsh. spp_audit then passes these files to dash -n, which can reject valid non-POSIX syntax. Accept only sh or dash, including supported env forms, and add fish and pwsh fixtures.

myasnikovdaniil NOT LGTM — on top of current main two of the nine tests fail, and the bash fallback the header describes fails two more.

Business context: catch dash syntax errors in files run by /bin/sh in the unit lane, so a bashism that parses under a workstation's bash-as-sh stops killing a whole bats file in CI.

The idea itself works. I added diff <(echo a) <(echo b) to hack/e2e-chainsaw/_lib/etcd-probe.sh and the first test caught it. In the PR's CI run the whole suite took under a second.

B1. Red after merging with main

The PR's CI ran on a base from 2026-09-02. I merged the head into main at c983b5c and ran the file with dash installed, under both hack/cozytest.sh and bats.

The first test fails on 8 files. Seven are fixtures in hack/testdata/install-wait/. They have #!/bin/sh and are broken on purpose, because hack/run-kubernetes-install-wait_test.bats reads them as data and nothing executes them. The eighth is packages/system/backupstrategy-controller/files/kafka-backup.sh. It has no shebang, its first line is # shellcheck shell=bash, and templates/strategy-kafka-default.yaml:70 runs it with /usr/bin/bash -c. So "no shebang means sh" is no longer true in this tree.

The last test fails with "could not extract cozytest.sh's translator". Main now starts that awk program with LC_ALL=C awk ', and the /^awk '$/ range never opens. The drift check did its job here. spp_translate also needs the same LC_ALL=C, main added it because BSD awk aborts on multibyte titles.

CI runs make unit-tests ... -j4 -k, so after merge this file is red in the unit lane of every PR.

Fix: rebase, exclude fixture trees like hack/testdata/, and don't audit a shebangless file that declares # shellcheck shell=bash. Match the LC_ALL=C prefix when extracting the translator and add it to spp_translate.

B2. The bash fallback fails the suite's own tests

Without dash the file uses sh (hack/sh-posix-parse.bats:73-77) and calls that a degraded check. Bash 5.1 and newer accepts process substitution even in POSIX mode. bash --posix -n on diff <(echo a) <(echo b) exits 0 on bash 5.3, while bash 3.2 still rejects it. So on a box where /bin/sh is a modern bash (Arch, which the header names), the fixtures at lines 189 and 228 are not reported, two tests fail, and make unit-tests is red for someone who changed nothing.

Fix: build those two fixtures from syntax every shell rejects, like the unterminated if in the third test, or skip the process substitution asserts when SPP_SH is not dash.

B3. Title and body claim more than the file checks

The PR body and the commit message both land in main as they are.

The title says every /bin/sh surface, but the walk only picks up *.sh and *.bats. There are 46 extensionless #!/bin/sh migration scripts in packages/core/platform/images/migrations/migrations/ that run in production, and none of them are checked. They all parse under dash today, so this is a gap and not a live bug. Twenty-seven first-party chart templates also carry inline /bin/sh scripts. The "Not covered" part names Makefile recipes and Chainsaw blocks, but not these two.

Two sentences are stale on main. "Every one of them here is a hack/e2e-chainsaw/_lib/ helper" is false because of kafka-backup.sh from B1, and the same sentence is in the file header and in the fifth test's comment. "bats-unit-tests stops at first failing FILE" is false too: the Makefile has one target per file now and CI passes -k. One <(...) still kills every test in its own file, that part holds.

Fix: either find candidates by shebang over tracked files, which picks up the migrations, or narrow the title and the "Not covered" list to what is walked. Drop or rewrite the two stale sentences.

Non-blocking

  1. find "$SPP_ROOT" walks gitignored trees. In a checkout with .claude/worktrees/ it finds 21977 candidates against 254 tracked ones, and reports other worktrees' files as offences. go-module-tests in the Makefile moved to git ls-files for this reason, and it would also give you the shebang-based walk from B3.
  2. [[ ... ]] and local -a x both pass dash -n. I added them to etcd-probe.sh and the suite stayed green. [[ is the most common bashism, so I'd list it next to echo -e and source in the stated limits.
  3. The open bot thread at line 115 is correct: '#!'*sh* also matches #!/usr/bin/fish and #!/usr/bin/pwsh. No tracked .sh uses either today, so it's a cheap fix and not a live defect.
