NOT LGTM. The mechanism is right and the headline result reproduces, but the reason recorded for why the widened key branch stays narrow is wrong in three places, one of them a commit body saying a test holds it.
Business context: a package left on its committed ref runs a release image in a lane meant to exercise the tree under review, and this removes the two causes of that.
Most of this PR is claims about behaviour, so, what I checked rather than read.
drift=5 to drift=0 reproduces. I rebuilt artifact copies of the five named packages by running each package's own yq -i stamp over its committed values.yaml, then ran the script from main and from this head over that tree. Five drifted, then none, same five names. The cozystack-api diff comes out byte-identical to the one in the description, 4d3 and 6c5 included.
The controller pin is as stale as claimed: e8bf0521... was last written by Prepare release v1.6.0-rc.4 on 2026-07-21 and has not moved since, while the MongoDB, RabbitMQ, Redis and Kafka drivers all landed after it.
21 tests against 21 @test blocks, green under the bats binary and under hack/cozytest.sh alike. I mutated eleven single lines of the script, one per claim the tests make. Every one reddens at least one test.
The Finalize check run on this head carries one annotation and it is the Node 20 deprecation notice, so the clean-run silence holds in CI too.
Blockers
B1: the trailing colon is not what keeps the key branch off imagePullPolicy
hack/overlay-main-images.sh:93, hack/overlay-main-images_test.bats:246, commits 895b30f7 and dffa880d.
The script comment says the key has to end at image, "so imagePullPolicy: and imagePullSecrets: still do not match". 895b30f7 repeats it. dffa880d goes further: "Remove it and imagePullPolicy matches the key branch, so a file differing only on a pull policy is overlaid ... The comment asserting that narrowness now has a test behind it."
Evidence: the branch is ^[[:space:]]*(- )?[A-Za-z]+[Ii]mage:... and [A-Za-z]+ needs a letter before image. A key that begins with image has nothing to put there, so neither key matches with the colon or without it. I ran the classifier as it stood at dffa880d and as it stands here, each with and without the colon, against imagePullPolicy: IfNotPresent, imagePullPolicy: Always, imagePullSecrets: [] and imagePullPolicy: docker/whatever. No match in any of the sixteen. Delete the colon from this head and run the suite: test 15 stays green and test 14 goes red instead, because clientImage: "ghcr.io/..." stops matching once the value scan starts at : ".
So the colon is load-bearing for the opposite reason to the one recorded, and the recorded one is what the next maintainer acts on. The comment above test 15 carries the same claim, and the test does not hold it: the only mutation that reddens test 15 is one that discards the whole drift filter, and that reddens four other tests with it.
Fix: record what actually narrows the branch, a letter required before image and a / required in the value, and drop the sentence in dffa880d about a test standing behind the colon. Test 14 is what holds it.
B2: dffa880 explains itself through this pull request's own state
"...the two commits before this one added three EXIT traps to a file declaring eleven, which is why Unit & controller tests is red."
Evidence: contributing.md makes review-iteration and planning vocabulary in a commit body blocking on the text alone. Merges here are merge commits, so this body lands on main, where the job is not red and "the two commits before this one" needs the series reconstructed to resolve.
Fix: state it as a property of the file. A .bats file under hack/ installs no EXIT trap beyond the debt its header declares, and these tests were installing three.
Non-blocking
- The description is stale on three counts: five commits not four, eight new cases not six, and the plan and
okcount agree at 21 not 19. Those are the numbers a reviewer checks the work against. - Eleven
trap ... EXITlines survive in the older tests and still do what the third commit describes. I broke test 7 on purpose:bats hack/overlay-main-images_test.batsexits 1 but prints twentyoklines and nonot okat all, so nothing names the test that failed.hack/cozytest.shnames it, somake unit-testsis fine, but the file header points the reader at the bats invocation. Pre-existing, and this change adds no traps. - The widened branch takes any key ending in
imageorImagewhose value holds a/before the first space, which covers values that are not references at all: a host path, a URL. Nothing in the tree hits that today. Outsidecharts/the only such keys are the three backup client ones, exporterImage, mariadbImage, maxscaleImage, tinkWorkerImage, kubectlImageand two emptyvddkImage. Nearest miss isuseUnprivilegedImage: false, kept out by the shape of the value rather than by the key, and it sits undercharts/, which the walk prunes anyway. hack/lib/image-refs.shalso enumeratesIMAGE_REF_EXTRA_FILES, still invisible to this walk. Unchanged here and documented as a deliberate exception indocs/agents/image-refs.md.

This is not what excludes them. [A-Za-z]+ requires a letter before image, and a key that begins with image has none, so imagePullPolicy: and imagePullSecrets: fail the branch with the colon or without it. I ran both classifier revisions, each with and without the colon, against both keys including a slash-bearing value: no match in any combination.
The colon does matter, for the other direction. Remove it and clientImage: "ghcr.io/..." stops matching, because the value scan then starts at : " and the " ends [^"[:space:]]* before any /. Test 14 goes red on that mutation, test 15 stays green.

The test does not hold this. Drop the colon from the key branch and this test still passes, because imagePullPolicy never matched the branch in the first place. The only mutation that reddens it is one that discards the whole blank-line filter, and that reddens tests 17, 18, 20 and 21 as well.

NOT LGTM. The script comment records the right reason now. The same wrong one is still in two other places: the comment above the pull-policy test, and the body of the commit that widened the branch.
Closed since the last round: the script comment names both narrowings and gives the colon back the job it actually does, and the trap commit was rewritten so it no longer explains itself through this pull request's own state. The description is right on all three counts that were stale (six commits, eight new cases, 21).
Re-measured rather than assumed, since the file moved. 21 ok against 21 @test blocks, green under hack/cozytest.sh. The EXIT-TRAP DEBT: 11 header against 11 trap ... EXIT lines, and hack/bats-no-exit-trap.bats green. The classifier is byte-identical to the previous head, and the whole tree diff between the two heads is the new commit's fourteen comment lines, so I spot-checked instead of replaying the mutation ladder.
Blockers
B1: the comment above the pull-policy test still credits the colon
hack/overlay-main-images_test.bats:243-247: "the classifier accepts a prefix before image only up to a colon for exactly that reason ... drop the colon from the key branch and this file is overlaid on a policy change, silently replacing the ref the PR asked for."
Evidence: I dropped the colon from the key branch on this head and ran the suite. a suffixed image key is a ref, not a config change goes red. a key merely STARTING with image is config, not a ref stays green, which I checked on its own with bats --filter "STARTING with image". The comment predicts the opposite of what the file does, and the script comment now says as much, so the two texts this pull request ships disagree. This is the one a reader hits first when asking what the test holds.
Fix: the correction the script comment already took. A letter is required before image, and that is what keeps both pull-policy keys out, with the colon or without it.
B2: the widened-branch commit body still carries the claim
6acb3816: "The trailing colon keeps it narrow: imagePullPolicy and imagePullSecrets are still config, because the key has to end at image."
Evidence: the branch was rewritten for this round. Every commit carries a new hash, and the trap commit's subject and body were rewritten along with it, so the rewrite reached this body and left it standing. Merges here are merge commits, so it lands on main as it reads, and no later commit can edit it.
Fix: reword it in the rewrite that is already happening.
Non-blocking
- The script comment cites "test 14" by ordinal. Nothing in the file carries that number, it comes from the runner's output order, and an insertion above line 231 moves it with nothing to catch the drift. The test has a name.
…main A file whose config differs from the artifact beyond its image lines keeps the committed ref. That is the safe answer, and it is not a neutral one: the component then runs its last release image in a lane whose job is to exercise the tree under review, and the only trace is one line among hundreds of overlay lines. Six packages took that path on a recent run, backupstrategy-controller among them, which is why four backup round-trip suites refused Kinds the tree supports and three unrelated pull requests each spent a round establishing the red lane was not theirs (#4257). Summarise the drifted packages in one GitHub annotation. Nothing about which files are overlaid changes; a run with no drift emits nothing. Assisted-by: LLM Signed-off-by: IvanHunters <[email protected]>
The classifier accepted a key only when it was exactly image, repository, registry, tag or digest. A chart that renders several images names the extras after what they are for, so backupstrategy-controller carries chBackupClientImage, rabbitmqBackupClientImage and redisBackupClientImage. The first two reach the classifier through the @sha256: branch; the third is pinned by tag alone, so it read as a config change and cost the WHOLE file its overlay. That package therefore kept its committed release ref in every lane that did not rebuild it, and served an image from v1.6.0 (22 July) against a tree carrying four backup strategy drivers added after it. Five of the seven chainsaw failures behind #4257 trace to that, across three unrelated pull requests. Accept a prefix before image in the key branch. Assisted-by: LLM Signed-off-by: IvanHunters <[email protected]>
…ey branch hack/bats-no-exit-trap.bats audits every .bats file under hack against the debt its own header declares, and this file was installing three traps beyond it. An EXIT trap inside an @test body replaces the one the bats binary installs for its own bookkeeping, so a test that then fails prints no TAP line at all and the suite reads as green. That is the reason the count is exact rather than a ceiling, and the reason the answer here is to stop installing the handler rather than to raise the number. Clean up at the end of the body instead: both runners set -e, so on failure the cleanup is unreachable and the scratch directory survives for inspection. The key branch had nothing holding its shape. A test now pins each half: that a suffixed key such as clientImage is read as a ref, and that a key merely beginning with image is not. Assisted-by: LLM Signed-off-by: IvanHunters <[email protected]>
The overlay keeps a package on its committed release ref when the artifact copy
differs from the repo on any line that is not image-reference-bearing. A blank
line is such a line, and the build produces one on its own: yq -i re-emits the
document when it stamps a digest, and a blank line separating two top-level keys
does not come back.
So a file the PR never touched differs from the artifact on a line carrying no
configuration, and loses its overlay for it. That was the whole of the remaining
drift list. Against the public nightly artifact at its own revision, with the
tree checked out at that same revision:
before drift=5 overlaid=29 core/platform, cozystack-api, dashboard,
kubeovn-webhook, linstor-gui
after drift=0 overlaid=34
Each of the five differed from the artifact by one blank line and its own ref,
nothing else, which is reproducible locally by running the stamping assignment
over the committed file. cozystack-api and dashboard are not peripheral: an e2e
result about either was a result about the last release rather than about main.
Discount blank lines before the test. A line with content still counts, so a
real config difference keeps the committed ref as before.

… key branch `! grep -q …` is a pipeline preceded by `!`, which POSIX exempts from set -e, and hack/cozytest.sh appends `return 0` to every converted test function, so a failed negation was discarded twice over. That line was the only assertion in 'no annotation when nothing drifted': mutating the drift>0 guard to `true` left the suite green under both runners. Replace all three negations with an explicit if/exit; the mutation now reddens test 19. The prefixed *Image branch matched any key ending in image, including operator-settable ones the build never stamps: vddkImage (core/platform, migration-controller) defaults to "" and a change there was absorbed from the artifact in silence, the opposite of what this script is for. Require the value to hold a repository path, which a ref always does and "" does not. The annotation counted ref-bearing files while naming deduplicated dirnames, so one package with a drifted values.yaml and a drifted images/*.tag read as two, and named <pkg>/images, which is not a package. Count the named list instead. Assisted-by: LLM Signed-off-by: IvanHunters <[email protected]>
Two comments credited the trailing colon with keeping imagePullPolicy and imagePullSecrets out of the key branch. It does not: the branch requires a letter before image, which a key beginning with image has nothing to supply, so neither matches with the colon or without it, even when the value carries a slash. The colon earns its place elsewhere, as the point the value scan starts from, and removing it reddens the suffixed-key test rather than the pull-policy one. A reader acts on the recorded reason, so a wrong one costs more than none. Refer to that test by name rather than by ordinal: the number comes from the runner's output order and moves when anything is inserted above it. While here, give the pull-policy test a failure message about pull policies: it read 'a PR-edited package was overlaid', which belongs to a different case. Both fixed in B1. The comment above the pull-policy test said the opposite of what the file does. It now says what the script comment says: the letter required before B2. The series was rebuilt again, so every hash moved. The tree at the head is identical to what you reviewed at Non-blocking 1. Taken. The script comment referred to "test 14" by ordinal; it now names the test. You are right that nothing in the file carries that number and an insertion above it would move it silently. LGTM. Both blockers are closed.
The comment above the pull-policy test now names the letter the branch demands before image and gives the colon back its real job. The widened-branch commit body dropped the claim as well. The script comment's "test 14" became the test's name, which covers last round's non-blocking note. This time I grepped both files and all six commit bodies for the claim in any wording instead of rechecking the two places I had quoted, and what is left about the colon is correct.
Re-measured after the rewrite. 21 ok against 21 @test blocks, green, and the file uses no bats run/$status/$output. EXIT-TRAP DEBT: 11 against 11 trap ... EXIT lines, trap audit green. With comments stripped the script is byte-identical across the two heads, so the classifier did not move and I reproduced only the mutation the dispute turned on: dropping the colon reddens a suffixed image key is a ref, not a config change and leaves a key merely STARTING with image is config, not a ref green. The drift guard still fires on a content line, and a real config line still counts as drift alongside a blank line holds it. Rebuilding artifact copies of the five packages with each one's own yq stamp over its committed values.yaml gives drift=5 on the parent of the first commit and drift=0 here, with every non-ref line in those five diffs blank.

hack/overlay-main-images.sh:99is 134 characters where the rest of the block stays under 84. The test name went in without a rewrap.609a014csays "the mutation now reddens test 19" — the same ordinal pointer the script comment just lost, and a commit body cannot be fixed afterwards.- The description says seven packages took that path on the run behind #4257.
618ab584says six, citing the same run. e9f666bcsays each of the five differed from the artifact by one blank line and its own ref. Running each package's own stamp over the committed file, which is the check that body names, costscore/platformthree blank lines (149, 623, 804). The other four lose one each.
What this PR does
Six commits against one script: one reports a silent degradation, three remove causes of it, two repair the tests and the reasons recorded beside them.
Why it matters. A file whose config differs from the current-main artifact beyond its image lines keeps its committed ref. That is the right safe answer, and it is not a neutral one: the component then runs its last RELEASE image in a lane whose job is to exercise the tree under review, and the only trace is one line among hundreds. Seven packages took that path on the run behind #4257. One of them,
backupstrategy-controller, served an image from v1.6.0 (22 July) against a tree carrying four backup strategy drivers added after it, so five of that run's seven chainsaw failures came from there, and three unrelated pull requests each spent a review round establishing that the red lane was not theirs. After this PR that list is empty. Against the public artifact at its own revision, with the tree checked out at that same revision:
Naming the drifted packages. One GitHub annotation after the existing tally. Which files get overlaid does not change, and a run with no drift emits nothing.
Cause one: a suffixed image key. The classifier accepted a key only when it was exactly
image, repository, registry, tagordigest. A chart rendering several images names the extras after what they are for, sobackupstrategy-controllercarrieschBackupClientImage,rabbitmqBackupClientImageandredisBackupClientImage. The first two passed only through the@sha256:branch; the third is pinned by tag alone, so it read as a config change and cost the whole file its overlay. The fix accepts a prefix beforeimage, and two things keep it narrow. A letter is required beforeimage, which a key beginning with it has nothing to supply, soimagePullPolicyandimagePullSecretsstay config; the trailing colon is not what does that, and they match neither with it nor without. The value must also hold a repository path, which keeps out operator-settable knobs named after an image:vddkImage: ""incore/platformandmigration-controlleris configuration the build never stamps, and absorbing it would be the opposite of what this script is for.Cause two: a blank line the build removes itself.
yq -ire-emits the document when it stamps a digest, and a blank line separating two top-level keys does not come back. So a file the PR never touched differs from the artifact on a line carrying no configuration at all, and loses its overlay for it:Running the stamping assignment over the committed file reproduces that diff exactly, which is the second signal behind the diagnosis rather than the first one twice. Blank lines are now discounted before the test; a line with content still counts, so a genuine config difference keeps the committed ref as before.
This accounted for all five remaining packages, and it retires the explanation offered in #4265, which ruled
yqreformatting out. That was wrong: the round-trip check behind it did not cover the blank line.cozystack-apianddashboardare not peripheral here. An e2e result about either was a result about the last release rather than aboutmain.Repairing the tests.
hack/bats-no-exit-trap.batsaudits every.batsfile underhackagainst the debt its own header declares, and this file was installing three traps beyond it. An EXIT trap inside an@testbody replaces the one the bats binary installs, so a failing test prints no TAP line at all and the suite reads as green. The answer is to stop installing the handler rather than to raise the number, so those tests clean up at the end of the body instead.Tests

okcount agree at 21, which is the reconciliation the trap audit exists to protect. Green under thebatsbinary and underhack/cozytest.sh, which is whatmake bats-unit-testsruns and the only one of the two whose result decides the gate. What this does not close
redisBackupClientImageis still pinned by tag with no digest, and the tag it names does not exist:Only nightly tags are published, so
redis-backup:v1.6.0resolves to nothing. Pinning it needs a published release tag first, which is #4264 rather than this PR.Making the overlay line-wise, so image lines transfer even when other lines genuinely differ, would go further still. It trades away the guarantee the script is built on, that a file comes wholly from one source, and that guarantee is deliberate and commented: a maintainer decision rather than a quiet change from a reviewer.
