fix(backups): stop the nats, kafka-metadata and rabbitmq backup demos from reading empty values - #4458

Navigate logical layers of code changes, visualize relationships, and explore their blast radius. 📝 WalkthroughWalkthroughKafka and NATS backup helpers now reuse CLI pods with ownership checks and label-based cleanup. NATS passes its password through stdin, and both helpers expose CLI errors. The RabbitMQ runner waits for its default strategy before reading its backup image. The Kafka strategy wait was moved without behavior changes. ChangesReusable CLI pods

NOT LGTM — both fixes are correct, but the nats verify read still throws stderr away, so "a failed read says why" is not true for nats yet.
IvanHunters The attach race is real and exec does not have it. kubectl run -i attaches only after the pod is running, and the attach carries only what the container writes after it registers (kubernetes#27264). An exec'd process starts with its streams already attached. The strategy wait matches the redis demo, and the e2e sandbox ships kubectl 1.33.13 (packages/core/testing/images/e2e-sandbox/Dockerfile:3), so --for=create works there. The chainsaw sentence in the body is also true: hack/e2e-chainsaw/kafka-metadata/chainsaw-test.yaml:91 and hack/e2e-chainsaw/rabbitmq/chainsaw-test.yaml:139 run these same run-all.sh scripts, and hack/select-e2e.sh picks kafka-metadata rabbitmq for this diff.
Blocker: the nats read discards stderr
The only read that goes through nats_cli still sends its stderr to /dev/null. In examples/backups/nats/00-helpers.sh:125, stream_message_count calls nats_cli "$app" stream info "$stream" --json 2>/dev/null. That hides kubectl's error, the kubectl wait error from nats_cli_pod, and the CLI's own message. So when the exec fails, the callers in 04-create-nats.sh, 06-restore-in-place.sh and 07-restore-to-copy.sh still print got '' and nothing else. The PR body (it becomes the merge commit), the nats_cli comment and e146f43 all say the opposite.
The new tests do not pin this. I appended 2>/dev/null to the exec in both nats_cli and kafka_run and ran both bats files through hack/cozytest.sh, and every test stayed green. The redis suite has a case for exactly this: "redis_cmd fails with kubectl's own error when the exec fails".
Fix: drop the 2>/dev/null on the nats_cli call in stream_message_count and keep the one on jq. A missing stream then prints "stream not found" on stderr, which is harmless there. A bats case like the redis one, with a stub exec that fails with a message, would keep it from coming back.
Non-blocking
nats_urlputsNATS_PASSWORDinto the--serverargument, so it now goes in the exec request URL, and the apiserver audit log records that URL atMetadatalevel. Before this PR it was in the throwaway pod's spec, so the exposure moved rather than grew. The redis demo passes its password on stdin for this reason. The nats CLI readsNATS_PASSWORDfrom the environment, sosh -c 'IFS= read -r NATS_PASSWORD; export NATS_PASSWORD; exec nats ...'fed byprintfkeeps it out of argv.- The CLI pod runs
sleep infinityas PID 1, which ignores SIGTERM. Everycleanup.shthen waits the full 30s grace period ondelete pod, and chainsaw runs cleanup twice per suite.--grace-period=1on that delete avoids it. A pod left over inSucceededorFailedalso passes thegetcheck and then waits 5m forReady. CI is not affected, because pre-clean deletes the pod. - In
kafka-metadata/run-all.shthe new "Wait for it rather than read it once" paragraph is glued to the S3/CA comment above it with no#separator line. The S3/CA text now sits above the wait instead of theifit describes, and "it" has no clear subject. The rabbitmq and redis copies keep the two paragraphs apart. - b2e7765 and 28044aa fix the README and the bats from earlier commits of this PR. With a merge commit those fixups stay in history, so folding them into 1b2bd57 and e146f43 keeps each commit correct on its own.
Checked, no finding: image refs are unchanged (natsio/nats-box:0.14.5, and the pinned Strimzi image that chainsaw overrides with the operator's own). Busybox sleep accepts infinity. A rerun is safe, since get || run reuses the pod and cleanup.sh removes it. hack/mariadb-first-boot-waits.bats passes 22/22, and no wait_hr_ready copy or exception changes. The Makefile discovers both new bats files through BATS_UNIT_FILES, and each goes red when its helper is changed back to kubectl run -i --rm.

Thanks, all four land. Pushed fe8503b. Blocker. The nats read keeps the exec's stderr now: 1. Password off argv. 2. Pod lifecycle. The CLI pod carries 3. Comment. The kafka strategy-wait paragraph is its own block above the 4. Folding b2e7765/28044aa. Left as-is: my setup avoids force-pushing the branch, and it squash-merges (like #4399), so they collapse into the single commit. If you'd prefer a rebased history I can arrange it. |

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win
Username-only NATS URL disables password auth. nats_url puts ${NATS_USER} in the URL with no password. When the URL has a user and no password, nats.go connectProto sends the username as an auth token. It then ignores the option user and password: if no password, assume username is authToken. The NATS_PASSWORD that nats_cli reads from stdin is never sent, so every nats_cli call fails authentication. The bats test locks in this URL shape, and its nats stub does not check credentials, so it cannot catch the problem.

IvanHunters Code looks good now, only the history is left. This repo doesn't squash: squash merge is off, and #4399 went in as a merge commit. So all six commits land in main as they are. Please fold b2e7765eb, 28044aa2a and fe8503b8a into the commits they fix, and drop the "Addresses the review" line from fe8503b8a. A force-push is fine.
The rabbitmq and kafka-metadata backup demos read the platform's cozy-default-<engine> strategy once, right after install, where the Helm upgrade that renders it is gated on dependsOn and can leave it absent for minutes; the demo then failed immediately instead of waiting. Replace the single read with kubectl wait --for=create, so it polls through NotFound and fails only on a real error. Assisted-by: LLM Signed-off-by: IvanHunters <[email protected]>
kafka_run seeded and verified topics through a throwaway `kubectl run -i` Pod per call. That Pod's stdout returns over an attach that only carries what the container writes after the attach registers, so a CLI that finishes first comes back empty with exit 0 -- the empty-read defect fixed for the redis demo. Run one long-lived CLI Pod and `kubectl exec` into it: an exec'd process owns its pipes, so its output cannot be lost that way, and stderr stays attached (the topic_meta / topic_partitions reads keep it) so a failed read says why. The Pod carries cozystack.io/backup-demo=kafka-metadata: kafka_cli_pod reuses only a Ready Pod the demo owns, replaces a leftover in a terminal phase, and refuses a same-named Pod it does not own; cleanup.sh reaps by that label with --grace-period=1. Unit tests under hack/ pin the exec path -- a throwaway run Pod or a re-added stderr redirect reddens them. Assisted-by: LLM Signed-off-by: IvanHunters <[email protected]>

IvanHunters LGTM, thanks.
What this PR does
The nats, kafka-metadata and rabbitmq backup demos carried the two empty-read defects the redis demo already fixed.
Empty read from an attach race (nats, kafka-metadata). Both seed/verify helpers ran each CLI call in a throwaway
kubectl run -ipod. That pod's stdout returns over an attach that only carries what the container writes after the attach registers, so a CLI that finishes first comes back empty with exit 0. Neither NATS nor Kafka ships a long-lived pod that carries its CLI (unlike rabbitmq, which already execsrabbitmqctlin its-server-0pod), so each demo now runs one long-lived CLI pod andkubectl execinto it: an exec'd process owns its pipes, so its output cannot be lost that way, and stderr stays attached so a failed read says why.cleanup.shremoves the pod.Single read of the platform strategy (rabbitmq, kafka-metadata). Both runners read the platform's
cozy-default-<engine>strategy once, right after install, where the Helm upgrade that renders it is gated ondependsOnand can be absent for minutes. Both nowkubectl wait --for=createfor it, so it polls through NotFound and fails only on a real error.Unit tests for the two rewritten helpers are added under
hack/, in thecozytest.shdialect, and assert the reply comes back through exec (a throwaway run pod makes the stub fail).Validation: kafka-metadata and rabbitmq are exercised by their in-tree chainsaw E2E suites. The nats demo has no chainsaw suite in this repository, so its change is covered by the unit test only.
