fix(kamaji): drop any subchart nested under the vendored kamaji chart - #4459
Conversation
The vendored kamaji chart declares a kamaji-etcd dependency gated on kamaji-etcd.deploy. That condition is never evaluated here: Helm's processDependencyEnabled returns before recursing when the chart it starts from declares no dependencies, and this umbrella declares none. A chart placed under charts/kamaji/charts would therefore render whatever the values say, deploying an etcd nobody asked for. Upstream does not ship that directory today, so the update recipe produces the same tree as before; removing it after extraction keeps it that way if upstream ever starts committing the packaged subchart. A subchart under charts/kamaji/charts deploys unconditionally through this umbrella, so the suite asserts that no template there produces a document. It is the package's first helm-unittest suite, so the Makefile gains the test target the repository sweep discovers, and the suite directory is kept out of the packaged chart. A guardrail, nothing more. The nested subchart is already gone from both the merge base (564f540) and the head (dd1fbf9), so this PR removes no vendored content. It changes the update recipe, adds a helm-unittest suite, and ignores tests/ at package time. None of that is rendered, so helm template of cozy-kamaji comes out identical and existing installs upgrade with zero manifest churn.
I reproduced the mechanism the comment describes. Put a kamaji-etcd chart back under charts/kamaji/charts/ and cozy-kamaji still renders its StatefulSet, even with --set kamaji-etcd.deploy=false and --set kamaji.kamaji-etcd.deploy=false. The parent declares no dependencies, so Helm never evaluates the subchart condition, and a vendored subchart cannot be switched off. Deleting it outright is the right call, and cozystack sets no kamaji-etcd values in the first place (tenant control planes run on managed DataStores), so the subchart really is dead weight.
The test is worth keeping. I dropped a dummy subchart back in with a template at templates/, then at templates/sub/, then at templates/a/b/, and the suite caught all three. make unit-tests picks it up, since the test target resolves to helm unittest . like the sibling packages, so CI actually runs it. Checked against helm-unittest 1.0.3.
Non-blocking notes:
- [NIT]
charts/kamaji/Chart.yaml+charts/kamaji/Chart.lock: once the recipe runsrm -rf charts/kamaji/charts, the vendored chart still lists thekamaji-etcddependency and the lock still pinskamaji-etcd 0.15.0with no chart behind them. Harmless on the render path, just inconsistent inside the tree. - [NIT]
tests/nested_subchart_test.yaml: the suite renders with default values and only looks attemplates/, so a reintroduced subchart that ships resources only throughcrds/, or renders nothing by default, would slip past. Thermwipes any nested subchart wholesale, so this is an edge of the coverage, not a hole in it.
On the earlier suggestion to make the selector recursive: charts/kamaji/charts/*/templates/* already matches templates at any depth in helm-unittest 1.0.3. The templates/sub/ and templates/a/b/ cases above both fail as expected, so there's nothing to change there.
What this PR does
A subchart nested under the vendored kamaji chart would deploy no matter what the values say, so this PR removes that directory in
make updateand adds a test that fails if anything renders from it. The vendored chart declares akamaji-etcddependency gated onkamaji-etcd.deploy, and the subchart itself is not vendored. The issue proposed pinningkamaji-etcd.deploy: falsein the package values. I tested that, and it would not have helped: through this package the condition is never evaluated at all.Helm skips the condition because the umbrella chart declares no dependencies.
processDependencyEnabledreturns immediately when the chart it starts from has nodependenciesin itsChart.yaml, andcozy-kamajihas none. The vendoredkamajichart is loaded fromcharts/without being declared, so Helm never recurses into it and never reads itskamaji-etcd.deploycondition. The same early return is in Helm v3 and v4. I putkamaji-etcd-0.15.0.tgzintocharts/kamaji/charts/and rendered the package three ways:kamaji-etcdkamaji.kamaji-etcd.deploy: falsein the package values: the same etcddeploy: falseedited into the vendoredcharts/kamaji/values.yaml: the same etcdRendering
charts/kamajion its own withkamaji-etcd.deploy=falserenders no etcd, which confirms the umbrella is what skips the condition. So any chart that ends up undercharts/kamaji/charts/deploys whatever the values say, and no values change can close the hazard. This PR changes two things:
make updateremovescharts/kamaji/chartsafter extracting the upstream chart. Upstream does not ship that directory today, so the recipe still reproduces the current tree exactly. I checked that by running it on a copy of the package. I also ran it against a fake upstream tarball that carried the subchart: the directory was extracted and then removed.charts/kamaji/charts/renders a document, and atesttarget letshack/helm-unit-tests.shpick it up inmake unit-tests. With the subchart tgz dropped in, the suite fails. With thermline removed from the recipe, the fake-upstream update leaves the tgz behind and the suite fails too./testsis anchored in.helmignore, so the packaged chart's file list is unchanged.I left the
kamaji-etcdblock in the vendored values alone. It is not quite dead:certmanager_issuer.yamlreads it to decide whether to keep the self-signed issuer. That only matters whencertManager.issuerRef.nameis set, and this package does not set it.helm templateoutput is byte-identical to main.Closes #4397
