fix(tenant): fail fast on an empty tenant apex and correct gateway docs - #4538
Aleksei Sviridkin (lexfrei) merged 11 commits into
Conversation
The gateway parameter description claimed the chart auto-enables a Gateway for tenants whose apex is derived from the parent (empty host) and leaves it off for custom-apex tenants. The resolver tenant.gatewayEffective never inspects host: an unset gateway key always means the tenant owns no Gateway and publishes through the nearest ancestor that owns one, regardless of host. The unit tests in gateway_default_test.yaml already pin this real behavior. Rewrite the description to match the code and regenerate the schema, README, Go types and the tenant-rd CRD. Signed-off-by: IvanHunters <[email protected]>
Add cozy-lib.ns-host-required: it returns the tenant apex like cozy-lib.ns-host, but fails the render when the platform has injected _namespace and its host is empty AND the app sets no host override (.Values.host). Charts that compose a service hostname as .<apex> otherwise emit a malformed trailing-dot host silently when the apex is unset. The guard is scoped to the injected state, so a standalone render (helm lint / helm template with no _namespace, or an empty _namespace map) stays renderable. This mirrors the gateway path, which fails on an empty apex only when a Gateway is actually rendered. Callers use it only at a hostname-emitting site, so a tenant with no apex and no public exposure is unaffected. Signed-off-by: IvanHunters <[email protected]>
The inline comment still described the old, incorrect behavior, that tenant.gatewayEffective returns true for a custom non-derived host. The resolver keys only on an explicit tenant.spec.gateway=true. Align the comment with the code and the corrected parameter description. Signed-off-by: IvanHunters <[email protected]>
Charts that publish a service compose their hostname as .<_namespace.host>. When the injected tenant apex is empty and no per-app host override is set, they used to emit a malformed trailing-dot hostname (e.g. "harbor.") into Ingresses, HTTPRoutes and Certificate dnsNames silently. Source the apex through cozy-lib.ns-host-required at each hostname-emitting site so the render fails with a clear message instead, matching the gateway path. Covered: harbor, postgres (external), qdrant (external), kubernetes (control-plane endpoint), vpn, seaweedfs, bootbox, monitoring (grafana, alerta, oidc client), and system/bucket (adds the cozy-lib subchart symlink it lacked). The guard is placed at the point each resource is actually emitted, so standalone renders, no-exposure tenants and the kubernetes no-etcd beacon path are unaffected. The post-delete cleanup hooks are left unguarded so an empty apex cannot block uninstall. Behavior change: a tenant with an empty injected apex and no host override that enables one of these components now fails its render (HelmRelease NotReady) instead of deploying a broken hostname. In practice the apex is always injected (root has root-host, children inherit it), so this only trips a genuinely misconfigured tenant. Signed-off-by: IvanHunters <[email protected]>

The requested host override can bypass cozy-lib.ns-host-required even when the caller still builds its hostname from the namespace apex. The affected callers do not use .Values.host, so rendering can produce incomplete names such as <release>. or <bucketName>..
Make override eligibility caller-specific, or require the apex unconditionally in callers that do not use .Values.host.

IvanHunters NOT LGTM. Two things block this: the guard breaks the kubernetes chart on the no-etcd path, which is why "Unit & controller tests" is red, and the new gateway description promises an opt-out that the chart does not have.
Business context: tenant apps build their public hostname as .<apex> and silently emit a broken harbor.-style name when the apex is empty. This PR turns that into a render error, and also corrects the tenant gateway parameter docs.
B1: the kubernetes chart no longer renders with no etcd and an empty apex
oidc-rbac-job.yaml:50 calls cozy-lib.ns-host-required at the top of the template, and that template renders on every path, including the awaiting-etcd one and oidc.mode: None. So a whole-chart render with _namespace.etcd: "" and _namespace.host: "" now fails. That is exactly the fixture hack/admin-kubeconfig-invariant.bats uses (packages/apps/kubernetes/tests/values-ci-no-etcd.yaml), and it is the failure in run 36421305493 (attempt 1, created 2026-09-28T12:21:27Z). E2E was skipped behind it.
I reproduced it locally. helm template of the chart with values-ci-no-etcd.yaml exits 1 at head with execution error at (kubernetes/templates/oidc-rbac-job.yaml:50:75): the tenant apex (_namespace.host) is empty ..., and exits 0 at the merge base 29932dd. make bats-unit-admin-kubeconfig-invariant fails on the second test at head.
This also contradicts what the PR says about itself. The PR body and the commit message both say the kubernetes no-etcd beacon path is unaffected. The comment in tests/host_guard_test.yaml says that path "must keep rendering even with an empty apex". The new test only renders templates/cluster.yaml, so it can't see the job template.
The fix is one of two, and the text has to match whichever you pick. Either move the guard in the OIDC job to where the endpoint is actually consumed, so the no-etcd render keeps working. Or decide that an empty apex is never valid here, set a host in values-ci-no-etcd.yaml, and drop the "no-etcd path is unaffected" claim from the PR body, the commit message and the test comment.
B2: gateway: false does not opt out of inheritance
The new description says "set to false to opt out of Gateway publishing entirely, including inheritance". The chart doesn't do that. In namespace.yaml:59-62, $gateway starts as $parentNamespace.gateway and is replaced only when tenant.gatewayEffective returns "true". For an explicit false the helper returns "false" (_helpers.tpl:92), which is the same result as unset, so the parent's gateway stays.
Rendered to check: helm template tenant-alice packages/apps/tenant --namespace tenant-root --set gateway=false --set-json '_namespace={"gateway":"tenant-root","host":"example.org","ingress":"tenant-root"}' --show-only templates/namespace.yaml writes namespace.cozystack.io/gateway: "tenant-root" and gateway: "tenant-root" into the injected values. The TenantGateway controller keys on that label, so apps in this tenant keep publishing through the parent's Gateway.
This text ships into the CRD, the schema and the README, and a user could rely on it to keep a tenant off the public Gateway. Please drop the false sentence, or say that false behaves like unset. It needs to change in values.yaml, then regenerate. The pre-existing comment in tests/gateway_default_test.yaml ("parked, no inherit") makes the same wrong claim. It is not in this diff, but this PR relies on it.
Non-blocking
- The cozy-lib case "does not fail on an empty apex when a host override is set" sets no
_namespace, so it passes through the standalone branch and never reaches the override check. I replaced(not (.Values.host | default ""))withtruein the helper and all 53 cozy-lib tests still passed. The harbor suite catches it, so the gap is only in the library test. Adding a_namespacewith an empty host to that case fixes it. - The guarded sites in postgres, vpn, bootbox, seaweedfs, monitoring, bucket and the OIDC job have no guard test. Harbor, qdrant and kubernetes'
cluster.yamldo, and reverting each of those three sites turns its suite red. - The error text tells the user to "set this app's host value", but
system/buckethas nohostvalue.
The rest checks out. The helper is safe on an absent or empty _namespace map, and the harbor and bucket cleanup hooks are left unguarded as described. The charts/cozy-lib symlink in system/bucket resolves and the chart renders standalone. The regenerated README, schema, CRD and Go type match values.yaml, and the codegen drift check is green.

This template renders on every path, including no-etcd and oidc.mode: None. With an empty apex it now fails the whole chart render, and that is the red admin-kubeconfig-invariant bats test. The guard needs to move to where the endpoint is used, or the fixture and the "no-etcd path is unaffected" claim need to change.

| ## @param {bool} [gateway] - Deploy own Gateway API Gateway (backed by Cilium Gateway API controller). When unset (the default), the chart auto-enables the Gateway for tenants whose apex is derived from the parent (i.e. `host` is empty), and leaves it off for tenants with a custom non-derived apex. Set to `true` or `false` explicitly to override that auto-behaviour. Note: leave the key absent (do not write `gateway: null`) — the chart distinguishes "unset" via missing-key, not via null value, to satisfy the JSON schema generated from this comment. | ||
| ## @param {bool} [gateway] - Deploy own Gateway API Gateway (backed by Cilium Gateway API controller). When unset (the default), the tenant does not own a Gateway and instead publishes through the nearest ancestor tenant that owns one, regardless of whether `host` is empty or custom. Set to `true` to give the tenant its own Gateway with its own LoadBalancer IP and Certificate; set to `false` to opt out of Gateway publishing entirely, including inheritance. A tenant with a custom (non-derived) `host` that needs its apex publicly reachable must set `true` explicitly, because an ancestor's TLS certificate does not cover a custom apex. Note: leave the key absent (do not write `gateway: null`): the chart distinguishes "unset" via missing-key, not via null value, to satisfy the JSON schema generated from this comment. |
There was a problem hiding this comment.
gateway: false still inherits. namespace.yaml keeps $parentNamespace.gateway unless tenant.gatewayEffective returns "true", and explicit false returns "false" just like unset. Rendering a child with gateway=false under a tenant-root gateway writes namespace.cozystack.io/gateway: "tenant-root". Please drop the "opt out ... including inheritance" sentence and regenerate.
The oidc-rbac bootstrap Job renders unconditionally, including the no-etcd bootstrap path and with OIDC disabled, so guarding its OIDC_SERVER_URL apex failed a render that must succeed: helm template of the chart with no etcd DataStore (hack/admin-kubeconfig-invariant.bats) aborted instead of emitting only the awaiting-etcd beacon. A running cluster's apiserver endpoint is already guarded in cluster.yaml (etcd present), which is the meaningful malformed-hostname case, so revert the oidc-rbac-job guard rather than gate it further. Restore the no-etcd unit fixture to an empty host so it keeps exercising that path. Signed-off-by: IvanHunters <[email protected]>
The rewritten gateway description claimed setting false opts out of Gateway publishing entirely, including inheritance. It does not: tenant.gatewayEffective returns "false" for both an explicit false and an unset key, so namespace.yaml keeps _namespace.gateway pointing at the nearest ancestor that owns a Gateway and the tenant still publishes through it. State that false currently behaves the same as unset, and fix the matching stale comment in gateway_default_test.yaml. Signed-off-by: IvanHunters <[email protected]>
The override case injected no _namespace, so it passed through the absent-map branch and never reached the .Values.host override check. Inject a non-empty _namespace with an empty host so the case actually covers the override skip. Signed-off-by: IvanHunters <[email protected]>
…arts Add host_guard_test.yaml for postgres, vpn, bootbox, seaweedfs, monitoring and bucket. Each renders its guarded template with a non-empty injected _namespace whose host is empty and no per-app host override, and asserts the ns-host-required failure, plus a positive render case with the apex set. Completes guard coverage alongside the existing harbor, qdrant and kubernetes tests. Signed-off-by: IvanHunters <[email protected]>

IvanHunters NOT LGTM. Both earlier blockers are fixed, but E2E is now red because of this PR: in the cluster the bucket system chart can't find the new helper, so the platform install doesn't finish.
B1: cozy-bucket fails to install because it gets no cozy-lib in the cluster
E2E (in-tree) failed at "Install Cozystack into sandbox" in run 36425702523 (attempt 1, created 2026-09-28T13:01:42Z). The run report shows tenant-root/bucket-cozy-backups-system stuck with this error:
cozy-bucket/templates/ingress.yaml:1:13
executing "cozy-bucket/templates/ingress.yaml" at <include "cozy-lib.ns-host-required" .>:
error calling include:
template: no template "cozy-lib.ns-host-required" associated with template "gotpl"
bucket-cozy-backups and backupstrategy-controller then time out waiting on it.
The charts/cozy-lib symlink makes the chart render locally and in helm-unittest. The cluster doesn't render from the symlink, though. It renders from the ExternalArtifact built from the PackageSource, and in packages/core/platform/sources/bucket-application.yaml only the bucket component lists libraries: ["cozy-lib"]. The bucket-system component (path: system/bucket) lists nothing. I checked every other chart this PR guards, and the other system and extra charts that call cozy-lib. Each one has cozy-lib in its PackageSource component. So bucket is the only one that breaks. It breaks every bucket install, including the platform's own backups bucket, so this isn't just a test problem.
Fix: add libraries: ["cozy-lib"] to the bucket-system component.
B2: the PR body still says the OIDC bootstrap is guarded
The PR body becomes the merge commit message. It still lists "kubernetes (control-plane endpoint and OIDC bootstrap)" under the covered charts, but 6602c08 removed the OIDC guard. oidc-rbac-job.yaml:50 is back to the merge-base line, so with an empty apex the OIDC server URL still comes out as https://<release>.:443. That's the same as before this PR, which is fine, but the body shouldn't promise it. The "Tests:" line is out of date too, since guard tests now exist for every covered chart and not only for harbor, qdrant and kubernetes.
What I checked is fixed
The no-etcd render with values-ci-no-etcd.yaml exits 0 and make bats-unit-admin-kubeconfig-invariant passes. With gateway=false under a tenant-root parent, the child still gets namespace.cozystack.io/gateway: "tenant-root". That matches the new description, and values.yaml, the schema, README, the Go type and the CRD carry the same text. I replaced the override check in the helper with true and the cozy-lib suite now goes red. I also swapped ns-host-required for ns-host one file at a time, and the new tests catch it in postgres, vpn, bootbox ingress, seaweedfs, bucket ingress and grafana.
Non-blocking
- Nine guarded files still pass every test when the guard is removed. They are harbor
harbor.yamlandhttproute.yaml, bootboxmachines.yaml, seaweedfsclient/cosi-deployment.yaml, bucketdeployment.yamlandhttproute.yaml, and monitoring_helpers.tpl,alerta/alerta.yamlandgrafana/httproute.yaml. So "Completes guard coverage" in the 0f4d39f message says more than the tests do. That message also mentions a positive case with the apex set, but the postgres suite's second case is external=false with an empty apex. - The header table in
tests/gateway_default_test.yaml:14still saysgateway=false explicit → OFF own (parked, no inherit). You fixed the test comment below it but not this line. - The repo merges with merge commits, so 37f5936 lands in main as it is. Its message says the no-etcd beacon path is unaffected, and at that commit it isn't, because 6602c08 is what fixes it. contributing.md doesn't require squashing fixups, so this doesn't block. Folding 6602c08 into 37f5936 would make that message true at its own commit.

In the cluster this fails with no template "cozy-lib.ns-host-required" (E2E run 36425702523). The symlink only helps local renders. The bucket-system component in packages/core/platform/sources/bucket-application.yaml needs libraries: ["cozy-lib"], the same as bucket and the other guarded charts.
system/bucket now calls cozy-lib.ns-host-required, but in a cluster the chart is built from the ExternalArtifact per its PackageSource, not from the charts/cozy-lib symlink used by helm and helm-unittest. The bucket-system component did not list cozy-lib, so the built chart lacked the helper and every cozy-bucket install (including the platform backups bucket) failed to render. Attach the library to the component, as the apps/bucket component already does. Signed-off-by: IvanHunters <[email protected]>
The rules-under-test header still described gateway=false as "parked, no inherit". It behaves like unset and still inherits. Align it with the fixed comment below it. Signed-off-by: IvanHunters <[email protected]>
Add per-template guard suites so each guarded hostname site is exercised on its own: harbor harbor.yaml and httproute.yaml, bootbox machines.yaml, seaweedfs cosi-deployment.yaml, bucket deployment.yaml and httproute.yaml, monitoring alerta.yaml, grafana httproute.yaml and the grafanaHost helper via oidc-keycloak.yaml. Each suite renders only its target template, so removing that file's guard reddens it. Also add a postgres positive case that renders the Certificate with an apex set (external=true). Both blockers addressed, plus the non-blocking items. B1 (cozy-bucket install). Fixed. Root cause confirmed: B2 (PR body). Updated. Dropped "OIDC bootstrap" from the kubernetes coverage line and expanded the Tests line to list the guard tests for all covered charts. Non-blocking 1 (untested guards). Done. Added an isolated per-template guard suite for each of the nine: harbor Non-blocking 2 (rules table). Fixed the Non-blocking 3 (fixup). Agreed the "no-etcd beacon path is unaffected" line in 37f5936 is only true once 6602c08 lands. I do not force-push the branch, so the cleanest path is a squash merge, which collapses these into one commit; with merge commits the fixup stays a separate commit. |

IvanHunters LGTM. E2E is still running, and it is the real check for the bucket fix. I removed the guard from each template that had no test before, one at a time, and each suite now goes red. The 37f5936 message is still wrong at its own commit, but that doesn't block.
Closes #4536
What this PR does
Two fixes to how tenant charts handle the tenant apex host (
_namespace.host), from an audit of what happens when a tenant'shostis changed or left empty.1. Fail fast on an empty tenant apex (was: silent malformed hostname).
Charts that publish a service compose their hostname as
.<_namespace.host>(for exampleharbor.<apex>,s3.<apex>,grafana.<apex>). When the injected apex was empty and no per-apphostoverride was set, they emitted a malformed trailing-dot hostname (harbor.) into Ingresses, HTTPRoutes and Certificate dnsNames with no error. Only the gateway path guarded against this.A new library helper
cozy-lib.ns-host-requirednow sources the apex at each hostname-emitting site and fails the render with a clear message when the apex is empty and no override is set. It is scoped to the injected state, so standalone renders (helm template/helm lintwith no_namespace, or an empty_namespacemap), no-exposure tenants, and conditionally emitted resources (external=false, the kubernetes no-etcd beacon path) are unaffected. The two post-delete cleanup hooks are left unguarded so an empty apex cannot block uninstall.Charts covered: harbor, postgres (external), qdrant (external), kubernetes (control-plane endpoint), vpn, seaweedfs, bootbox, monitoring (grafana, alerta, grafana OIDC client), and system/bucket (which also gains the
cozy-liblibrary it was missing, both the local subchart symlink and its package-source registration).2. Correct the tenant
gatewayparameter documentation.The
gatewaydescription (values.yaml, values.schema.json, README, the Go type, the tenant-rd CRD, and an inline comment in namespace.yaml) claimed the chart auto-enables a Gateway for tenants whose apex is derived from the parent (emptyhost) and leaves it off for custom-apex tenants. The resolvertenant.gatewayEffectivenever inspectshost: an unsetgatewaykey always means the tenant owns no Gateway and inherits from the nearest ancestor that owns one. The unit tests already pin this behavior. The description is rewritten to match and regenerated.Behavior change. A tenant with an empty injected apex and no
hostoverride that enables one of the covered components now fails its render (the HelmRelease reports NotReady) instead of deploying a broken hostname. In practice the apex is always injected (the root tenant hasroot-host, children inherit it), so this only trips a genuinely misconfigured tenant.Tests: a new
cozy-lib.ns-host-requiredunit test, plus per-chart guard tests for harbor, qdrant, kubernetes, postgres, vpn, bootbox, seaweedfs, monitoring and system/bucket. All affected chart suites pass.Screenshots

Downstream repositories
I walked the trigger map against the diff. The only touchpoint is the tenant
README.mdgateway description, which the website release bot regenerates automatically fromREADME.mdon a stable tag (no manual follow-up). The terraform provider is not affected: this is a description-only change to the existinggatewayfield, with no field, default or enum change, and the tenant-rd CRD schema reaches the provider as opaque JSON. Boxes left for a maintainer to confirm.Release note
