Navigate logical layers of code changes, visualize relationships, and explore their blast radius. 📝 WalkthroughWalkthroughThe vminstance Chainsaw suite adds coverage for VMDisk clones from an Alpine golden image and from another VMDisk. Only source.http had e2e coverage, so a regression in either clone path would ship unnoticed. The suite now clones a VMDisk from a golden image in cozy-public and then clones that disk again, checking that each DataVolume points at the expected PVC and becomes Ready, that its PVC is Bound, and that each VMDisk reports WorkloadsReady. CDI derives Ready from the DataVolume phase alone and can reach Succeeded from the claim's annotations before the claim binds, so Ready does not stand in for the binding. vm-default-images is opt-in and the e2e cluster does not enable it, so the suite creates its own small golden image under an e2e name rather than relying on the package. The second clone reuses the first disk, so the Alpine image is the only download. Assisted-by: LLM Signed-off-by: Aleksei Sviridkin <[email protected]>

LGTM. Test-only change, and both VMDisk clone paths finally have real coverage with the right completion asserts. You already answered both CodeRabbit points on the branch, and I checked both against the code.
What this covers well
Both clone sources go through a real lifecycle. source.image resolves to the PVC vm-default-images-e2e-alpine-3.21 in cozy-public and source.disk to vm-disk-image-clone in the test namespace, which is exactly how packages/apps/vm-disk/templates/dv.yaml builds each source, and the DataVolume asserts pin spec.source.pvc to those. So the test proves source resolution, not just readiness.
The success signal isn't vacuous. Each clone asserts the DataVolume Ready, the PVC Bound, and the VMDisk Ready plus WorkloadsReady. WorkloadsReady is the one that tracks CDI actually finishing the clone: per packages/apps/vm-disk/README.md, Ready follows the Helm release since #4380, so WorkloadsReady is what proves the clone completed. A typo'd condition type would fail the assert rather than pass it, so there's no false-green path. Names are pinned, timeouts bounded (10m DataVolume, 2m PVC, 2m VMDisk), and no existing assert was weakened: the diff only adds a new Test and touches the header comment.
Findings
- [MINOR]
hack/e2e-chainsaw/vminstance/golden-image.yaml:15, golden image is pulled over HTTP, which deviates from #3482's no-external-download ask (verified justified, non-blocking)
- [NIT]
hack/e2e-chainsaw/vminstance/golden-image.yaml:7, duplicates the golden-image shape already in hack/cdi_golden_image_create.sh
Notes
Your phase: Succeeded reply is right for CDI v1.66.1: Ready tracks status.phase hitting Succeeded, so the phase assert would just repeat it, and updateStatus can reach Succeeded off the claim annotation before the PVC binds, which the new phase: Bound assert now covers. The clone data path is proven as far as CDI population. Booting a VM off a cloned disk would be stronger, but that's outside #3482. I didn't run the suite (no cluster in review), so the E2E evidence is your PR lane run.

[MINOR] golden image is pulled over HTTP, which deviates from #3482's no-external-download ask (verified justified, non-blocking)
Recording this for the #3482 trail rather than asking for a change. #3482 says to clone the in-cluster alpine-3.21 and not download anything. I checked why that is not possible here: the vminstance e2e install sets up cozystack.vm-instance-application (hack/select-install.sh:78), not the opt-in vm-default-images package, so alpine-3.21 is not present in cozy-public to clone, and the only golden-image creator in the tree, hack/cdi_golden_image_create.sh, is a manual helper that the e2e path never calls. One small image, imported once and shared by both clone cases (source.disk reuses the first clone), is a reasonable call and is lighter than the "pull Ubuntu twice" concern the issue was written against. The e2e- name prefix keeps it clear of anything the package owns. No change needed.

IvanHunters Keeping it as is. The URL is the one vm-default-images pins for alpine-3.21, so the test clones the same file the package would import, and the suite already pulls Ubuntu over HTTP for the other VMDisk cases.

[NIT] duplicates the golden-image shape already in hack/cdi_golden_image_create.sh
Same vm-default-images-<name> naming and storage.bind.immediate.requested annotation as hack/cdi_golden_image_create.sh. The differences here (Alpine instead of Ubuntu, 1Gi instead of 5Gi, ($values.storageClass) instead of a hardcoded replicated) are intentional, and a shell heredoc cannot be reused from Chainsaw, so this is just a note that the near-twin exists.

I looked at reusing it. The script hardcodes replicated and 5Gi and creates the DataVolume with kubectl, so calling it from a script step needs new arguments and loses Chainsaw's cleanup of the applied resource. Leaving the two apart.
What this PR does
Closes #3482.
The
vminstancesuite now covers both VMDisk clone paths, which had no e2e test at all. One disk is cloned from a golden image withsource.image, and a second disk is cloned from the first withsource.disk. For each clone the test checks that the DataVolume points at the expected source PVC and becomesReady, that its PVC isBound, and that the VMDisk reportsReadyandWorkloadsReady, the same way the standalone VMDisk test does. TheBoundcheck is separate because CDI derivesReadyfrom the DataVolume phase alone, and can reachSucceededfrom the claim's annotations before the claim binds; aphase: Succeededassert would only repeatReady. The golden image is a fixture the suite creates itself.
vm-default-imagesis an opt-in package and the e2e install does not enable it, soalpine-3.21from the default collection is not there to clone. The suite imports the same Alpine 3.21 image intocozy-publicunder the namee2e-alpine-3.21, so it can never collide with an image the package owns. This is the only download in the new test, and thesource.diskcase reuses the first clone as its base disk. The long wait sits on the DataVolume, not on the HelmRelease. Since #4380 a vm-disk release goes Ready once the DataVolume exists and the clone's progress is reported through the VMDisk
WorkloadsReadycondition, so the test does not assert the HelmRelease at all. Chainsaw deletes the clones before the golden image at cleanup. The clone itself is only proven by this PR's E2E run, on the
localclass of the PR lane.Screenshots
