What this PR does

Two Chainsaw script ops had a timeout smaller than the waits inside them. When the op ceiling fires first, Chainsaw kills the shell: the script never prints its own error, and a cleanup trap never runs.

The gateway listener-set step could poll for 660s under a 6m op. Its cleanup trap also deleted two tenants with no limit on the wait. Each delete now runs under an outer timeout, because kubectl's own --timeout does not cover discovery or a stalled request. A tenant delete gets 300s, the same 5m that .chainsaw.yaml gives a delete op. The parent is deleted only after the child is gone, because deleting a parent while its child is still uninstalling wedges the parent's cleanup. A failed tenant delete fails the step with kubectl's own error, so a leaked tenant shows up here and not in a later suite. The op is now 24m, which covers the polls plus those bounds.

The redis-tls CA-projection step has 30s read caps that add up to well over its 5m op. Raising the op would not hold, because several reads run in loops. So all reads now share a 240s step budget. No read starts after the budget runs out, and a read that is still running gets cut off when it does. A read that hits its bound, or finds the budget already spent, says which read it was.

Two exec checks in the same step blamed the 15s redis-cli cap for any failure, including a refused exec or a missing container. They now print the exit status and what the exec printed.

The step also runs under bash now, for pipefail. The sandbox's /bin/sh is dash, which rejects set -o pipefail. Chainsaw 0.2.15, the version the sandbox image installs, supports a shell: field on script ops. Without pipefail, a failed Secret read took base64's zero exit status and was reported as a wrong source name.

The private-key check read the projection a second time, so a failed second read made it pass. It now checks the value the step already fetched.

I added hack/chainsaw-op-budgets.bats to guard all of this. It holds the gateway op above its polls plus its delete bounds, keeps the child-before-parent order, holds the redis budget under its op with every kubectl call going through the clamped helper, and runs the redis step's script against a stubbed kubectl to check each failure message and the clamp. On main, 11 of its 12 tests fail. The one that passes is the healthy-stub control.

Release note

test(e2e): the gateway listener-set and redis-tls projection steps now fail on their own errors instead of being killed by the op timeout, and redis-tls reports the real cause of a failed read or exec.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Tests
    • Added automated checks to verify gateway operations have sufficient time to complete and cleanup deletions are bounded and correctly ordered.
    • Expanded gateway scenarios to cover cleanup failures: if child-tenant deletion fails or times out, the parent is left in place; deletion failures are reported.
    • Updated Redis TLS checks with bounded read times and a shared execution limit. Failure reports include command output and status, and checks cover private-key material in the decoded projection.

Walkthrough

The gateway test increases its operation timeout and bounds route and tenant cleanup. The Redis TLS script adds a shared read budget, checks projected data, and reports command output and status on failures. Bats tests inspect timeout contracts and exercise success and failure cases.

Changes

Gateway listener-set cleanup

Layer / File(s) Summary
Bounded cleanup and timeout contract
hack/e2e-chainsaw/gateway/chainsaw-test.yaml, hack/chainsaw-op-budgets.bats
The operation timeout increases to 24 minutes. Route deletion has a 60-second limit, and tenant deletions have 300-second limits. The parent deletion runs only after child deletion succeeds. Bats checks timeout margin, delete bounds, cleanup order, and failure reporting.

Sentinel failures still expose their errors in the step log, but the failure message does not include them as intended. This is a bounded diagnostic issue to fix or accept before merging.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to cc731

The changes improve test-cluster cleanup ordering and bound Kubernetes validation calls without expanding public access or privileges. No material security regression was identified, but execution and forced-interruption behavior remain unverified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The real end-to-end operations retain the runner's existing Kubernetes authority, including tenant deletion, Secret reads, and pod execution. Their exposure is the cluster reachable with those credentials; effective RBAC reach is not established by these files. The new local Bats executions substitute client stubs.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The Redis checks distinguish a missing tenant-facing Secret from an indeterminate read: protected Secret lookups must report NotFound, while authorization failures and timeouts fail validation. The shared budget does not intentionally turn those failures into successful isolation checks.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Gateway polling bounds total 660 seconds and cleanup delete bounds, including kill grace, total 675 seconds, leaving 105 seconds beneath the operation ceiling. This improves cleanup opportunity but is not a hard guarantee: applies and some reads remain uncapped, and EXIT cleanup cannot survive every forced termination.

The step's polls can wait 660s under a 6m op, and its cleanup trap
deletes two tenants with no bound on the wait. When the op ceiling
fires first, Chainsaw kills the shell: the poll that was running never
reports, the trap never runs, and both tenants stay behind for every
later suite.

The deletes keep waiting, child before parent, since a parent deleted
while its child is still uninstalling wedges its own cleanup. Each
delete runs under an outer timeout with a kill grace, because kubectl's
--timeout bounds only the wait after the request and not discovery or
a stalled request. The parent is deleted only once the child is gone.
A failed tenant delete fails the step with kubectl's error, its exit
status and the tenant left behind, rather than passing with the leak.
The op is sized above the polls plus those bounds, and a unit guard
holds it to that sum and the cleanup to that order.

The CA-projection step caps each kubectl at 30s, but more capped reads
run than its 5m op can cover, so a degraded apiserver could spend the
ceiling and leave nothing but "signal: killed". The reads now share a
step budget held under the op, and a read that hits its bound or finds
the budget spent says which read it was.

Two exec checks reported the 15s redis-cli cap for any failure, sending
a reader after a slow redis when the exec was refused or the container
was missing. They now report the exit status and what the exec
printed. The step also runs under bash with pipefail: under dash a
failed Secret read took base64's zero status and surfaced as a wrong
source name. The private-key check reads the projection already
fetched, since a second read that failed made it pass.

LGTM.

I ran the new suite the way CI does, in a Linux container with dash as /bin/sh, coreutils, and the pinned Chainsaw v0.2.15: 12 of 12 green at the head, and with the two YAMLs reverted to the merge base 11 of 12 fail while only the healthy-stub control passes, so the tests redden on exactly the behaviour they guard. The op arithmetic holds. Gateway runs 1440s over 660s of polls plus 675s of deletes with their kill grace, 105s to spare. Redis runs 300s over a 240s wall-clock step budget that also contains the link_wait sleeps, since the budget is an absolute deadline from script start, which leaves roughly 55s. The shell: bash line is necessary and correct: against the real chainsaw v0.2.15 binary a script op with no shell: runs under /usr/bin/sh and set -euo pipefail aborts with Illegal option -o pipefail, while shell: bash runs it under /usr/bin/bash. hack/chainsaw-op-budgets.bats is picked up by the unit lane's wildcard, is wired into the runner coverage, and respects the EXIT-trap ban. Merging current main into the head stays green.

A few non-blocking consistency notes, all in the diagnostic-quality class this PR is already improving.

These reference code outside this PR's diff (unchanged files, or lines outside a hunk), so GitHub cannot render them inline.

[MINOR] hack/e2e-chainsaw/gateway/chainsaw-test.yaml:1018 the three applies and the namespace label read in the step body carry no outer bound

kubectl apply at :1018, :1030, :1044 and kubectl get ns -o jsonpath at :1039 run with kubectl's default request timeout of 0. Against an unresponsive apiserver one of them runs to the 24m ceiling, where Chainsaw SIGKILLs only the shell and the EXIT trap never runs, leaking both tenants into every later suite (the #4268 mechanism your own .chainsaw.yaml describes). This is pre-existing and the PR improves matters by bounding the polls and the deletes, but the new comment's claim that "a poll or a delete is what fires and the trap still runs" holds only while these four calls fit the 105s of headroom. Either wrap them in timeout and raise the op to match, or soften the comment.

[NIT] hack/e2e-chainsaw/redis/chainsaw-test.yaml:426 the TLS ping still blames the 15s cap for any failure

|| pong='(no reply: redis-cli failed or hit the 15s cap)' attributes a 403, a spent budget or a k() clamp to the 15s cap, the exact wording you remove for the replication (:495) and sentinel (:513) execs in this same step. Worth the same treatment for consistency.

# kubectl still writing would take SIGPIPE and fail the pipeline.

[MINOR] tls.key presence check reports a transient read failure as "tls.key no longer carries"

This read's failure path lands on the step's own verdict line, so a transient error here (I drove it with a 503 stub) prints redis-secure.ca-tls no longer carries tls.key: this check has stopped proving anything. The kubectl error is still logged right above it, so nothing is swallowed, but the conclusion misattributes the cause. It is the same shape you fix one read up at :340 and pin with the test "a failed Secret read is not reported as a wrong source name"; this sibling read was edited in the diff (grep -qx to grep -x >/dev/null) yet kept the old form and has no test over its failure path. Capturing into a variable with its own rc, the way $proj already does, closes it.

Same diagnosis is already in #4644, in its last comment.

# because its child namespaces take minutes to drain. A child still
# uninstalling at its bound leaves the parent in place: a leaked
# tenant rather than a wedged one. A failed tenant delete fails the
# step with kubectl's own error and exit status (124 is the bound),

[NIT] "124 is the bound" is incomplete under timeout -k 5

A kubectl that ignores SIGTERM and takes the follow-up SIGKILL from timeout -k 5 exits 137, not 124, so the comment names only one of the two bound-hit codes.
