mattia-eleuteri NOT LGTM. The problem is real and deleting the claim is the right fix, but the delete now runs before anything checks that the backup can be restored, and that turns a failed restore into a lost disk.
The defect itself is confirmed on current main: with keepOriginalPVC: false the PVC stays in place, Velero's CSI PVC action returns early for an existing claim, and the RestoreJob reports Succeeded over the old data.
B1: the original PVC is deleted without checking that the Velero Backup exists
The restore path reads only the backup name from driverMetadata before prepareForRestore runs, and the only velerov1.Backup read on that path (resolveUnderlyingResourcesForRestore) ignores a lookup error. Both default Velero strategies set ttl: 720h0m0s, so Velero garbage-collects the Backup after 30 days, while the cozystack Backup artifact stays: BackupReconciler acts only on its own deletion. A RestoreJob for such an artifact with keepOriginalPVC: false now halts the VM, deletes the DataVolume and the PVC, and only then creates a Velero Restore that cannot find its backup and fails validation. With a Delete reclaim policy, the Kubernetes default, the volume is gone too. On main the same RestoreJob also fails, but the disk survives.
Fix: before prepareForRestore touches anything, get the Velero Backup and fail the RestoreJob unless it exists and is Completed. That check is worth doing for keepOriginalPVC: true as well, since it saves halting a VM for nothing, but for false it is what keeps the deletion safe.
B2: the PVC is deleted even when its DataVolume could not be deleted
Step 4 turns a deleteDataVolume error into a Warning event and carries on, and Step 5 then deletes the PVC. With the DataVolume still in place, CDI's DataVolume controller creates a fresh claim under the same name, Velero then skips it as an existing PVC, and the restore ends Succeeded on a freshly imported disk instead of the backup. Step 5 should run only for disks whose DataVolume is confirmed gone, and a failed DataVolume deletion should hold the restore back or fail it.
B3: the guard that keeps a PVC the user asked to keep has no test
Changing the condition of Step 5 from !opts.GetKeepOriginalPVC() && vmRes != nil to vmRes != nil keeps every test green. With keepOriginalPVC: true the rename usually removes the original name first, so the existing tests cannot tell, but when a rename fails (its error is only an event on this branch) that condition is the one thing between the user's kept disk and a delete. A test with keepOriginalPVC: true and a rename that fails, asserting the original PVC still exists, would pin it.
What I ran on a merge of the head with current main: go test ./internal/backupcontroller/... passes. Turning Step 5 off fails both new tests, and treating a Terminating PVC as gone fails TestPrepareForRestore_KeepOriginalPVCFalse_WaitsForTerminatingPVC.
CI: the red E2E Tests is bucket-1-capacity alone, which this diff does not reach. No e2e suite on main runs an in-place VM restore, so the unit tests are the only coverage of this path.
Ordering with #3427: once it lands, a standalone VMDisk restore goes through this step too. Its current head refuses a disk that a running Pod still mounts before anything is changed, and this PR needs that check: without it, deleting a mounted claim leaves it Terminating behind pvc-protection until the VM stops, and then the volume goes with it.
|
Aleksei Sviridkin (@lexfrei) thanks, all three are addressed in 4ddf320. B1. Before B2. B3. I reverted each fix on its own and the matching test failed every time: the Velero Backup check removed, a DataVolume deletion error turned back into an event, no wait for a pending DataVolume, and the Step 5 condition cut down to On #3427: in the VMInstance path, Step 2 halts the VM and waits for its VMI to be gone before Step 5 deletes anything, so the only mount left is a virt-launcher pod that is already shutting down. This PR does not reach the standalone VMDisk path. Agreed that the mounted-disk refusal in #3427 has to stay once that path runs through Step 5. |
…ut keepOriginalPVC
With keepOriginalPVC=false the restore deleted each DataVolume with
Orphan propagation and left its PVC in place for Velero to overwrite.
Velero never overwrites a PVC: its CSI restore action skips the data
mover for a claim that already exists, and existingResourcePolicy=update
fails to patch the immutable spec of a bound claim, so it only stamps
its labels on it. The RestoreJob then reports Succeeded with the disk
still holding its pre-restore data.
The claim left behind also breaks the disk for good. It has lost its
owner reference to the orphaned DataVolume, and it lacks the
cdi.kubevirt.io/storage.populatedFor annotation that the backed-up copy
carries, so the CDI webhook refuses the DataVolume the resumed
HelmRelease creates ("Destination PVC already exists"), on every
reconcile.
Delete the PVC once its DataVolume is gone, and hold the Velero Restore
until the claim has actually disappeared: one still mounted stays
Terminating behind pvc-protection, and Velero would take it for an
existing claim again.

Deleting the original PVC of a keepOriginalPVC=false restore is only safe when Velero can put the disk back. The Backup artifact outlives the Velero Backup it points to, which Velero garbage-collects at TTL, and nothing checked it before prepareForRestore halted the VM and deleted the disks: a restore of an expired backup lost the volume where it used to fail with the disk intact. The Velero Backup must now exist and be Completed before any preparation starts. A DataVolume that survives its deletion makes CDI recreate the claim under the original name, which Velero then skips as an existing PVC, so the restore would end Succeeded on a freshly imported disk. A failed DataVolume deletion now fails the restore, and the PVCs are deleted only once every DataVolume is gone. Reading the DataVolume back needs get on datavolumes, which the ClusterRole did not grant. Assisted-by: LLM Signed-off-by: Mattia Eleuteri <[email protected]>

Keep the source disks recoverable until the restore succeeds.
For keepOriginalPVC=false, Step 5 can delete one PVC and requeue while a later PVC is still terminating. No Velero Restore exists yet, so the next reconciliation repeats the Backup preflight. If the Backup expires during that wait, the NotFound branch permanently fails the RestoreJob after a source disk has been deleted. Preserve the source PVs through successful restore, then clean them up for keepOriginalPVC=false.

mattia-eleuteri LGTM. The Velero Backup is checked before anything is touched, a DataVolume that fails to delete or is still there holds the restore back, and the PVCs go only after every DataVolume is gone. On a merge of the head with current main, go vet and go test ./internal/backupcontroller/... pass. Dropping the phase check, turning the DataVolume error back into continue, or removing the DataVolume wait each fails a test.
One correction for the description, since it becomes the merge commit. TestPrepareForRestore_KeepOriginalPVCTrue_FailedRenameKeepsPVC still passes with the Step 5 condition cut to vmRes != nil: a failed rename holds the restore back before Step 5, so the test never reaches the guard. The guard is still pinned, because the same change fails TestPrepareForRestore_KeepOriginalPVC_CacheLagsBehindWrites, so nothing to fix in the code. Only the "Each test fails with its fix reverted" sentence is not true for that one.
This PR and #4673 each pass on main but fail together. TestReconcileRestore_DoesNotRetryAJobItAlreadyFailed from #4673 has no Velero Backup in its fixture, so with the new check its first run fails the RestoreJob before it suspends the HelmRelease. A Completed Velero Backup vb in cozy-velero in that fixture makes it pass, and whichever PR lands second needs it.
What this PR does
An in-place VMInstance restore with
keepOriginalPVC: falsereportsSucceededwithout restoring the disks, and leaves every disk it touched unable to come back.prepareForRestoredeletes each DataVolume with Orphan propagation and leaves the PVC in place, on the assumption, stated in thedeleteDataVolumecomment, that Velero overwrites it. Velero does not overwrite a PVC. Its CSI restore action returns early for a claim that already exists, so no DataDownload is ever created, and withexistingResourcePolicy: updatethe merge patch it attempts instead is rejected because a bound claim's spec is immutable. All that reaches the claim is the labels-only fallback patch, which also drops thecdi.kubevirt.io/allowClaimAdoptionannotation the resource modifier added. The claim left behind then blocks the disk for good. Orphan propagation has removed its owner reference to the DataVolume, and it lacks the
cdi.kubevirt.io/storage.populatedForannotation that kubevirt-velero-plugin writes on the backed-up copy, so when the HelmRelease resumes, the CDI webhook refuses the DataVolume it creates withDestination PVC <ns>/<name> already exists, on every reconcile. Deleting the disk through the API leaves the PVC behind, and a new disk of the same name fails the same way.Observed on a v1.6.3 cluster, for a VMInstance restore with
keepOriginalPVC: falsewhose disk was attached to the VM. The Velero log for the restore, trimmed:velero restore describe --detailslists the PVC as(failed)and the Restore isCompletedwith two warnings. Afterwards the claim had its original creation timestamp and UID, no owner reference, noallowClaimAdoption, nopopulatedFor, and the disk's HelmRelease wasReady=Falsewith the webhook error above. That cluster runs a Velero build frommain, whose wording is quoted above; the released v1.17.1 and v1.18.3 return early at the same point withPVC already exists. Skip restore this PVC.(pkg/restore/actions/csi/pvc_action.go).The fix deletes the PVC when
keepOriginalPVCis false, only once its DataVolume is confirmed gone so that CDI cannot recreate it, and holds the Velero Restore until the claim has actually disappeared. A claim still mounted staysTerminatingbehindkubernetes.io/pvc-protection, and creating the Restore then would hit the same existing-claim path. Velero then creates the PVC from the backup, the data mover fills it, and the recreated DataVolume adopts it throughpopulatedFor. A failed deletion now fails the RestoreJob instead of letting it reportSucceededover the old data. Before 2234824 the DataVolume was deleted with background propagation, so garbage collection removed the claim, but nothing waited for it.Deleting the claim is only safe when Velero can put the disk back, so before any preparation the reconciler now gets the Velero Backup and fails the RestoreJob unless it exists and is
Completed. The Backup artifact outlives the Velero Backup, which Velero garbage-collects at its TTL, and without the check a restore of an expired backup would halt the VM and delete its disks before failing. The check runs for every Velero restore, whateverkeepOriginalPVCsays. A DataVolume that cannot be deleted now fails the RestoreJob too, and the preparation waits for every DataVolume to be gone before it goes further: a surviving DataVolume makes CDI recreate the claim, which Velero then skips. Reading the DataVolume back needsgetondatavolumes, which the backupstrategy-controller ClusterRole now grants next todelete.TestPrepareForRestore_KeepOriginalPVCFalse_SkipsRenameasserted the old behaviour, that the original PVC survives, and is replaced byTestPrepareForRestore_KeepOriginalPVCFalse_DeletesPVC.TestPrepareForRestore_KeepOriginalPVCFalse_WaitsForTerminatingPVCcovers the wait. Both fail onupstream/mainwithout the controller change.TestReconcileVeleroRestore_UnusableVeleroBackupTouchesNothingcovers an expired Velero Backup and one being deleted,TestPrepareForRestore_KeepOriginalPVCFalse_KeepsPVCWhileDataVolumeRemainsa failed and a pending DataVolume deletion, andTestPrepareForRestore_KeepOriginalPVCTrue_FailedRenameKeepsPVCa failed rename underkeepOriginalPVC: true, which must leave the claim in place. A helm-unittest suite,tests/restore_rbac_test.yaml, checks the new verb. Each test fails with its fix reverted, with one exception:TestPrepareForRestore_KeepOriginalPVCTrue_FailedRenameKeepsPVCstill passes with the Step 5 condition cut tovmRes != nil, because a failed rename holds the restore back before Step 5 is reached. That guard is pinned byTestPrepareForRestore_KeepOriginalPVC_CacheLagsBehindWrites, which fails with the same cut.helm unittest packages/system/backupstrategy-controllerpasses.go test ./internal/backupcontroller/...passes.Related: #4601 reports the same Velero mechanism for a standalone VMDisk, where
prepareForRestoredoes nothing at all becausecollectUnderlyingResourcesrecords no disk. #3427 makes a VMDisk report its own disk; withkeepOriginalPVC: falsethat path then runs into this defect too, and this change covers it once both are in. This PR does not touch the VMDisk path itself.Screenshots
