What this PR does

Fixes #3322. An in-place Postgres (CNPG) restore decided whether to skip deleting the live Cluster by comparing its creationTimestamp with the RestoreJob's StartedAt. The timestamp says the Cluster is new, not which restore rendered it, so two cases let a restore skip its purge and report Succeeded on data from another restore:

  1. Two RestoreJobs into the same application at once. The second sees the Cluster the first produced, created after its own StartedAt, and skips its purge.
  2. The live Cluster is deleted while the restore waits for the WAL archive. The still-active HelmRelease re-renders it from the previous restore's values, again created after StartedAt.

Refuse a restore into an application another restore holds

The RestoreJob controller now refuses, for every driver, a RestoreJob that has not started yet when another unfinished RestoreJob in the namespace writes into the same application and goes first. The refused job fails with reason ConcurrentRestore, and its message names the job that goes first. It fails instead of waiting, so the application is never restored a second time later, after the first restore, by a job its author may no longer expect to run.

A started restore goes before one that has not started. Between two that have not, the older goes first, by creation time and then by name; creation times have one-second precision, so two jobs created in the same second are ordered by name. A running restore is never failed by a newer one. The target application is resolved by restoreJobTarget, the same helper the BackupJob hold uses, so a Velero restore into another namespace does not collide with an in-place one.

The gate lists RestoreJobs through the manager's API reader, not the informer cache. A job reconciled before the cache holds its peer's StartedAt would otherwise see that peer as not started and, on a same-second name tie, proceed alongside it. The controller runs a single worker, so a peer's StartedAt written by an earlier reconcile is already on the API server when the next job reads it; SetupWithManager now sets MaxConcurrentReconciles: 1 explicitly, since the guarantee depends on it.

Skip the CNPG purge only for this restore's Cluster

The restore patch already sets bootstrap.newServerName to restoredServerName(cluster, RestoreJob UID), a value unique to each RestoreJob. The postgres chart now annotates the Cluster with it as postgres.cozystack.io/restored-server-name. The annotation is rendered even when the barman plugin is not; the plugin's serverName also carries the value, but the plugin renders only with chart-level S3 coordinates. The driver skips the purge only when the annotation names this RestoreJob. A Cluster produced by a concurrent restore, or re-rendered from an earlier restore's values, carries another value and is purged.

The mark lives on the rendered Cluster rather than in RestoreJob status. That keeps it valid in the case the skip exists for: the purge succeeded, but the TargetPurged status write failed. A UID recorded in status was rejected in the code for exactly that reason. A Cluster rendered by a chart that predates the annotation has none and keeps the creation-time check, so a restore in flight across an upgrade behaves as before.

Tests

  • TestRestoreAhead covers order, a started job going first, the name tie-break, finished and terminating jobs, other applications, retargeted restores and a Velero restore into another namespace.
  • TestReconcileRestore_ConcurrentRestoreIsRefused checks that the newer job fails with ConcurrentRestore and the running one is left alone.
  • TestReconcileRestore_ConcurrentRestoreReadsPastTheCache gives the cache a stale, not-started peer and the API reader the started one, and requires the job to fail with ConcurrentRestore.
  • TestCNPGClusterFreshlyRecovered adds both cases from the issue: a Cluster marked by another restore and created after StartedAt must be purged. The timestamp-only cases are kept for the unmarked fallback.
  • TestReconcileCNPGRestore_RepeatInPlacePurgesStaleRecoveryCluster gains two reconcile-level cases. One purges a Cluster that another restore marked, even though it was created after StartedAt. The other runs a full purge, takes the mark from the bootstrap.newServerName the restore patch wrote, drops TargetPurged as a lost status write would, and requires a Cluster carrying that mark to survive, although it predates StartedAt. That pins the purge decision to the value the chart actually renders.
  • packages/apps/postgres/tests/restore_mark_test.yaml checks that the annotation is rendered with and without the barman plugin, and is absent on a Cluster that was never restored.

Each new test was checked against the code it guards: disabling the gate call, listing through the cache, flipping the started-job precedence, ignoring the annotation, or deriving the expected mark from the app name instead of the cluster name each turns one red. go test ./internal/backupcontroller/... and helm unittest packages/apps/postgres (152 tests) pass. The restore flow was not run against a live cluster.

docs/operations/backup-classes.md documents the one-restore-at-a-time rule and the annotation.

Downstream repositories

Walked the trigger map in docs/agents/contributing.md against the diff: Go changes in internal/backupcontroller (no CRD or API type change), one annotation added to the postgres chart's Cluster (no values.yaml or values.schema.json change), and a docs paragraph. No package is added or renamed, no platform values, ApplicationDefinition, RestoreJob CRD, metric, label or namespace changes, so no trigger is reached.

Release note

fix(backups): a RestoreJob now fails with reason ConcurrentRestore when another unfinished RestoreJob is already restoring the same application, instead of running alongside it; create it again once the first restore has finished. An in-place Postgres restore now skips deleting the live Cluster only when that Cluster was rendered for this RestoreJob, identified by the new postgres.cozystack.io/restored-server-name annotation, so it no longer reports Succeeded on data from a concurrent or earlier restore.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Restores targeting the same application are now handled one at a time. A competing restore is refused rather than queued, with started restores taking priority.
    • PostgreSQL now calculates a default shared_buffers value when the memory limit is below 512 MiB, while respecting explicitly configured values.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Recovery clusters are more reliably distinguished from manual recoveries and clusters created by other restores, reducing the risk of purging the wrong cluster.
  • Documentation
    • Clarified restore ordering and how recovery-cluster cleanup is determined.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The changes add ordering checks for concurrent RestoreJobs and use restore-specific marks to identify recovery Clusters. The PostgreSQL chart also adds a restore annotation and calculates a default shared_buffers value for memory limits below 512 MiB.

Changes

Restore safeguards

Layer / File(s) Summary
Track recovery Cluster provenance
packages/apps/postgres/templates/db.yaml, packages/apps/postgres/tests/restore_mark_test.yaml, internal/backupcontroller/cnpgstrategy_controller.go, internal/backupcontroller/cnpgstrategy_controller_test.go, docs/operations/backup-classes.md
The chart renders the configured restore name as a Cluster annotation. The CNPG controller uses the annotation and application restore mark when checking recovery freshness. Tests cover marked, unmarked, and mismatched Clusters.
Order restores by target application
internal/backupcontroller/restorejob_target_lock.go, internal/backupcontroller/restorejob_controller.go, internal/backupcontroller/restorejob_target_lock_test.go, docs/operations/backup-classes.md
The controller checks for an earlier eligible restore using the API reader. It fails a later unstarted RestoreJob when a peer targeting the same application is ahead. Tests cover ordering, target matching, reconciliation, and stale cache state.

PostgreSQL memory defaults

Layer / File(s) Summary
Calculate shared_buffers for low memory limits
packages/apps/postgres/templates/db.yaml
For memory limits below 512 MiB, the chart sets a default to one quarter of the limit, with a 16 MB minimum and a cap at the memory request. Explicit shared_buffers values take precedence.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 6a758

The restore safeguards have a narrow test-coverage gap, but the supplied evidence does not establish a material failure introduced by this change. Merge with owner awareness of the missing live-cluster validation.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 6b942

The safeguards reduce conflicting restores and mistaken reuse of another restore’s database. No introduced security vulnerability was established. Some protection still depends on chart compatibility, and the admission check does not provide universal destination locking or cancellation guarantees.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — The sensitive outcome is replacement of a target application’s database Cluster and its labelled PVCs, followed by recovery from the selected backup. Admission affects all supported restore drivers, while the new rendered provenance check is specific to CNPG.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • inferred — Restore requests select Backup and target references; existing strategy validation precedes the new gate, and refused jobs do not reach credential projection or driver dispatch. The recovery annotation is an identity-correlation control, not authentication: its trust depends on authority over application values and Cluster metadata, which was not established for deployments.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Ownership is derived from current target fields rather than a durable admitted destination. The unchanged API type does not declare target immutability, and deletion retains best-effort cleanup with no CNPG rollback. Thus retargeting and termination require additional policy or lifecycle guarantees before claiming exclusivity through quiescence; these are pre-existing limitations, not established regressions.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — If destination-wide exclusivity is required, consider a stable admitted destination identity, restrictions on retargeting after start, and ownership release only after driver activity is quiescent. Include cross-namespace Velero collisions in that contract rather than treating the current admission check as a universal lock.

Verdict

LGTM with non-blocking notes

The concurrent-restore gate and the annotation-keyed purge-skip are correct, upgrade-safe and HA-safe. The open items are one test-adequacy gap, one residual pre-existing edge the fix does not reach, a message-wording NIT, and the red CI that belongs to main rather than to this change.

Findings

  • [MINOR] internal/backupcontroller/restorejob_target_lock.go:81, creation-time tie-break in restoreGoesFirst is not pinned by any test
  • [MINOR] internal/backupcontroller/cnpgstrategy_controller.go:455, no-annotation fallback leaves the old timestamp hole open for a tenant-managed recovery Cluster (pre-existing)
  • [NIT] internal/backupcontroller/restorejob_target_lock.go:69, ConcurrentRestore message can name the wrong job

Caveats

  • The red CI on head is not this PR. Unit & controller tests fails in internal/fluxcontract (TestChainsawSuitesReadHistoryThroughTheSharedName, reading hack/e2e-chainsaw/monitoring/chainsaw-test.yaml). Both files are byte-identical base↔head and untouched here, and the failure reproduces at the merge-base f4a6eb8, so it is pre-existing main breakage (a guard test out of sync with the monitoring suite added 2026-10-02). internal/backupcontroller itself is green. Merge stays mechanically gated until main is fixed or this branch rebases past the fix - not a code problem in this PR. This refutes the ci-red-on-head invariant.
  • The prune-set-from-overwritten-spec invariant does not apply. The init-script DROP DATABASE and spec.Databases = sourceDatabases are both at merge-base with zero diff lines, and init-script.yaml is untouched. This PR changes only the Cluster-purge skip and the concurrent gate; neither alters when the database-prune runs, and the flag that gates it is not touched. Not armed by this change.
  • This was a static review. SSA on the re-rendered Cluster, real CNPG re-bootstrap, the Flux suspend/resume race and leader failover mid-restore are render/unit-blind. That machinery is pre-existing and unchanged; only the skip decision is new. A cozystack-pr-test run exercising a repeat in-place restore plus two concurrent restores would cover the gap.

Checked and correct

wantMark == annotation holds by construction: the purge-skip (:838) and the restore patch (:927) both call restoredServerName(clusterName, restoreJob.UID), the chart renders it verbatim (db.yaml:13, quote only, no truncation), and barman-present/absent/never-restored are all asserted by tests/restore_mark_test.yaml (152/152 helm unittest, postgres bats green). Gate serialisation is real: the controller runs replicas: 2 with unconditional --leader-elect plus MaxConcurrentReconciles:1, so one active reconciler reads a peer's StartedAt uncached; refusal is terminal and precedes credential projection. A per-term mutation sweep over the diff finds every fix conjunct covered by a test, except the tie-break noted above.

[MINOR] creation-time tie-break in restoreGoesFirst is not pinned by any test

Every TestRestoreAhead case orders jobs by names that already sort the same way as their creation times. Dropping the creation-time comparison entirely and falling straight to name order leaves the backupcontroller suite green (verified: the CreationTimestamp branch removed, go test ./internal/backupcontroller -run TestRestoreAhead stays ok). A regression to name-only ordering would contradict the documented "the older one runs" guarantee and ship unnoticed. Add one case where the two orders disagree - an older job with the lexicographically-larger name, neither started - and assert the older still goes first.

[MINOR] no-annotation fallback leaves the old timestamp hole open for a tenant-managed recovery Cluster (pre-existing)

When restoreMark == "" the decision falls back to createdAt.After(StartedAt). On the new chart the annotation is absent exactly when .Values.bootstrap.newServerName is empty - the manual bootstrap.enabled: true path (tenant sets oldName/serverName, no newServerName). If a RestoreJob is in flight against such an app and the tenant's manual recovery Cluster is deleted and re-rendered during the WAL-wait window (before the driver patches newServerName), the re-render has recovery, no annotation and createdAt > StartedAt, so the purge is skipped and the job can report Succeeded on the tenant's recovery source rather than the backup. Same defect class as #3322; the old code had it for every Cluster, so this PR does not make it worse - it is the one residual case the new logic still cannot distinguish. targetApp is in scope at the decision (:747); gating the timestamp fallback on targetApp.Spec.Bootstrap.NewServerName == wantMark (keep it only for the old-chart upgrade window) closes it. Non-blocking; raise only if manual-bootstrap + concurrent RestoreJob is a combination you want covered.

Handle deleted peer Backups before admission.

If an unfinished peer RestoreJob references a deleted Backup, restoreJobTarget returns ok == false, so restoreAhead omits that peer and admits a second RestoreJob for the same application. The first RestoreJob remains unfinished until its own reconcile marks it Failed.

Returning the unresolved-target error from the admission scan is not sufficient. It can delay unrelated RestoreJobs while they inspect the peer, and it does not itself perform the peer's failure transition. Reconcile the unresolved peer to a terminal failure state before evaluating admission, or otherwise remove it from the admission set only after that bounded transition. Do not silently treat the unresolved peer as unrelated.

Andrey Kolkov (@androndo) LGTM. Both cases from #3322 are closed: a second restore into the same application is refused, and the purge is skipped only for a Cluster rendered for this restore. The tests cover the refused paths as well.

Business context: an in-place Postgres restore could skip its purge and report Succeeded on data from a concurrent or earlier restore, because the Cluster's creation time cannot say which restore rendered it.

What I checked:

  • go vet and go test ./internal/backupcontroller/... pass at this head and on a trial merge with current main. helm unittest packages/apps/postgres passes.
  • The CNPG and Velero drivers write StartedAt before their first destructive step, so a job the gate refuses has not touched the application yet.
  • The points from the earlier review (tie-break test, the job named in the message, the unmarked manual-recovery fallback) are fixed at this head.

One merge-order note, not blocking. This PR and #4673 conflict in the APIReader doc comment in restorejob_controller.go, and with both merged TestReconcileRestore_ConcurrentRestoreReadsPastTheCache fails with object was modified. #4673 re-reads the RestoreJob through APIReader after the finalizer update on the cached client, so the status write goes out with the older resourceVersion from the live fake. Adding alpha.Finalizers = []string{restoreJobFinalizer} to the fixture makes the merged tree pass. Whichever PR lands second needs that line.

Nothing stopped two RestoreJobs from rewriting one application at once.
Each restores the target from its own Backup, so the application ends up
on whichever finishes last, and the CNPG driver's purge decision cannot
tell which of the two produced the live Cluster: the second job could
skip its purge and report Succeeded on the first job's data.

A RestoreJob that has not started now fails with reason
ConcurrentRestore when another unfinished RestoreJob in the namespace
writes into the same application and goes first. A started restore goes
before one that has not; between two that have not, the older one goes
first, by creation time and then name, so a running restore is never
failed by a newer one. The refused job fails instead of waiting, so the
application is not restored a second time later, after the first
restore, by a job its author may no longer expect to run.

The gate lists RestoreJobs through the manager's API reader rather than
the informer cache. Creation times have one-second precision, so two
jobs created in the same second are ordered by name, and a job reconciled
before the cache held its peer's StartedAt would see that peer as not
started and proceed alongside it. The controller runs one worker, so a
peer's StartedAt written by an earlier reconcile is on the API server by
the time the next job reads it; SetupWithManager now states that.

The target is resolved as the BackupJob hold resolves it, so a Velero
restore into another namespace does not collide with one in place.

…ster

The in-place CNPG restore skips deleting the live Cluster when it
carries bootstrap.recovery and was created after the RestoreJob started,
taking that as "this restore's own purge and re-render produced it". The
timestamp does not say which restore rendered the Cluster. A Cluster
deleted while the restore waits for the WAL archive is re-rendered by
the still-active HelmRelease from the previous restore's values and is
created after StartedAt too; the restore then skipped its purge and
reported Succeeded on the previous restore's data.

The restore patch already sets bootstrap.newServerName to
restoredServerName(cluster, RestoreJob UID). The chart now annotates the
Cluster with it as postgres.cozystack.io/restored-server-name, whether
or not it renders the barman plugin that also carries the value, and the
purge is skipped only when the annotation names this RestoreJob. The
mark lives on the rendered Cluster rather than in RestoreJob status, so
it still covers the failed status write the skip exists for. A Cluster
rendered by a chart that predates the annotation keeps the creation-time
check.

…did not render

A recovery Cluster without the restored-server-name annotation fell back
to the creation-time comparison. On the current chart the annotation is
absent when bootstrap.newServerName is empty, i.e. a manually configured
recovery: re-rendered during the WAL-archive wait it is created after
StartedAt, the purge was skipped and the restore could report success on
the manual recovery source. Use the creation-time fallback only when the
application's bootstrap.newServerName already carries this restore's
server name, which keeps it for Clusters rendered by a chart that
predates the annotation.

Andrey Kolkov (@androndo) I rebased this onto current main. The APIReader comment conflicted with #4673, so it now keeps both reasons for the uncached reader. I also added the restore finalizer to alpha in the TestReconcileRestore_ConcurrentRestoreReadsPastTheCache fixture, because without it that test fails with "object was modified" on current main.

Update the security-model text for partly reserved routes.

Item 7 still says that a route with one withdrawn hostname and one ordinary hostname reads Accepted=False. It also says that the message names the hostnames that lost. This PR changes that behavior. When every withdrawal on a route has cause withdrawnAnswered and the route claims at least one free hostname, acceptPartlyReserved in internal/controller/tenantgateway/reconciler.go deletes the withdrawal. The route then reads Accepted=True. TestReconcile_WithdrawnHostnameDoesNotTakeTheRoutesOtherNames now asserts this.

The changed paragraphs on Line 26 and Line 105 already describe the new behavior. Item 7 now contradicts them.

Fix: limit the item 7 sentence to HostnameConflict losses. Say that a route whose only refused names are reserved by a passthrough listener stays Accepted and gets no message for those names.

lost-hostname message behavior to HostnameConflict. For a route with at least
one free hostname whose only refusals are withdrawnAnswered withdrawals from a
passthrough listener, document that acceptPartlyReserved removes those
withdrawals, leaving the route Accepted with no message for those names.

🟠 Major · Prevent the serial migration hook from exceeding the HelmRelease… · ipam-migration.sh:324-375

packages/system/cilium/files/ipam-migration.sh:324-375
🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Prevent the serial migration hook from exceeding the HelmRelease timeout.

The post-upgrade hook processes CiliumNodes serially. Each node can consume both ALLOCATION_TIMEOUT and AGENT_TIMEOUT, so the hook duration grows with the node count and can exceed the generated HelmRelease upgrade timeout on a sufficiently large or slow cluster. The generated HelmRelease uses RetryOnFailure without upgrade remediation, so the direct consequence is a timed-out and retried upgrade, not the rollback described above.

Increase HelmReleaseUpgradeTimeout to cover the supported worst-case duration, or move the per-node waits and agent restarts out of the Helm hook into an asynchronous controller or Job.

Update the generated HelmRelease’s HelmReleaseUpgradeTimeout to cover the

🟡 Minor · Update the security-model text for partly reserved routes. · README.md:139

packages/extra/gateway/README.md:139
📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

🟡 Minor · A lost test-op race on one CiliumNode aborts the whole migration. · ipam-migration.sh:358-362

packages/system/cilium/files/ipam-migration.sh:358-362
🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

A lost test-op race on one CiliumNode aborts the whole migration.

clear_cidrs uses a JSON-patch test operation. The test operation fails when the operator or an agent writes spec.ipam.podCIDRs between stale_cidrs and the patch. The comment on lines 271-272 expects this race. The call on Line 361 runs under set -e, so a failed patch ends the script immediately. The remaining nodes are not visited. The Job (backoffLimit: 0) fails, and the Helm upgrade fails with it. The same applies when stale_cidrs cannot read a CiliumNode that was deleted after the initial list.

Retry the read-and-clear a few times, as exclude_from_kube_ovn already does. If all retries fail, mark the node as failed and continue with the next node.

Update the node loop that calls stale_cidrs and clear_cidrs to retry the
read-and-clear sequence a bounded number of times, following the retry pattern
in exclude_from_kube_ovn. If all attempts fail, mark the node as failed and
continue processing the remaining nodes instead of letting set -e abort the

packages/system/cilium/images/cilium-operator/patches/merge-https-and-tls-passthrough-sharing-a-port.diff:1276
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Preserve TCP access logs on shared-port passthrough chains.

When a Gateway has multiple HTTPS ports and one shared TLS passthrough port, this call moves the passthrough chain from the base listener to tlsPassthroughFilterChainsForPort. That helper does not assign getTCPAccessLogs(m), although the former base-listener helper does. Configured TCP access logs therefore disappear for passthrough traffic. Add the access-log assignment to the per-port helper before using its chains here. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

withdrawals, leaving the route Accepted with no message for those names.

2859-2910: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

This subtest does not prove the expected mark.

mkRestoreJob() sets no UID. The fake client keeps an empty UID unless it assigns one, so restoredServerName(clusterName, "") produces both the patched NewServerName and the expected mark. The test checks that the read-back mark equals the expected mark, which is true by construction. A regression that derives the expected mark from a different field would still pass. Set an explicit UID on the seeded RestoreJob. Then assert that mark == restoredServerName(clusterName, rj.UID).

Proposed change
 		mark := app.Spec.Bootstrap.NewServerName
-		if mark == "" {
- t.Fatalf("the restore patch left bootstrap.newServerName empty")
+		if want := restoredServerName(clusterName, rj.UID); mark != want {
+ t.Fatalf("bootstrap.newServerName = %q, want %q", mark, want)
 		}

In mkRestoreJob, set UID: types.UID("rj-uid") in ObjectMeta.
