Three golden-image guards get the same new predicate: a DataVolume that is not Succeeded, with restartCount >= 3 and Running=False. It lands in the Go image picker, vm-disk and kubernetes-nodes, and an empty storageClass now resolves to the class CDI actually binds on. I checked the predicate is the same in all three places, verified the CDI behaviour it leans on against the pinned upstream (v1.66.1), mutation-tested the regression tests, and ran the chart's bats siblings against the head merged with current main. Nothing blocks. Three non-blocking notes below.
Findings

Verification

That mechanism is also pinned live by thevminstancechainsaw suite, which gets selected for avm-diskchange. - Merged

[MINOR] packages/apps/kubernetes-nodes/templates/nodegroup.yaml:334 empty storageClass now resolves to the virt-default, which can refuse a pool that rendered before this change
On an osImage.builtin pool with an empty storageClass and no bound disk yet, the merge base resolved the empty class to the Kubernetes default and wrote that onto the worker disk, so a golden on the Kubernetes-default class produced a working same-class clone. This change resolves the empty class to the class annotated storageclass.kubevirt.io/is-default-virt-class first (_helpers.tpl:431, included here at nodegroup.yaml:334). On a cluster where an admin put is-default-virt-class on a class V that differs from the Kubernetes default K, with the golden on K, the pool now resolves to V, V != K, and the cross-class guard fails the render where it rendered before. Narrow and recoverable, so non-blocking: nothing in-tree sets is-default-virt-class (grep finds only this PR's fixtures) and the stock cozystack default is local, so a stock cluster is unaffected; there is no data loss (a pre-clone pool has no workers), the error is legible, and the new behaviour is arguably correct (CDI would place a classless disk on the virt-default, mismatching the golden). But storageClass is immutable (self == oldSelf), so an affected pool cannot be fixed by edit, only recreated. Worth a release-note line naming this upgrade-time behaviour change for clusters carrying a virt-default annotation; the PR body and release note do not mention it.

[MINOR] guard still refuses in the window after a manual importer-pod recreate, and the error text names only back-off
CDI never lowers status.restartCount (the storage.pod.restarts annotation is written only when the new count is >= the stored one) and sets Running=False for any container state that is not Running, including ContainerCreating and Pending. So after the standard remedy the error text itself points at (fix the source, delete the importer pod to skip the back-off), the fresh importer pod goes Pending then ContainerCreating with restartCount still frozen at >= 3 and Running=False, and the guard keeps refusing the render until that container actually reaches Running; if the node is pulling the importer image or the pod cannot schedule, the refusal persists for that whole window. Non-blocking: the HelmRelease is built with Strategy: RetryOnFailure and an explicit retry interval, so this self-heals as a flap rather than a stuck release, and a genuinely-importing golden (container Running, so Running=True) is never wrongly refused. But the error message (dv.yaml:38, nodegroup.yaml:373, same predicate in providers.go:389-400) attributes the delay solely to the importer back-off, which is not the cause on the manual-recreate path, a word on the new-pod-startup window would make it accurate.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Both error messages now say that a recreated importer pod counts as not running until its container starts, and the chart tests pin that sentence. The image picker in providers.go returns no message, so nothing changes there. The catalog header in kubernetes-worker-image listed only phase Failed as a refusal, it names this case now too.

[NIT] comment justifying beta-annotation-last describes a path CDI does not take for these DataVolumes
The comment reads: "a claim CDI leaves without a class is defaulted by Kubernetes, which honours both." For these DataVolumes CDI does not leave the claim for Kubernetes to default: pvcFromStorage returns ErrStorageClassNotFound and creates no PVC when neither the virt-default nor the GA default is found and spec.storage carries no accessModes, and none of the worker-image / vm-default-images / nodegroup / vm-disk templates set accessModes. So on a beta-only cluster an unnamed golden never gets a PVC and the Kubernetes-side defaulting the comment relies on is never reached. The key ordering itself (beta last) is correct and harmless for the worker disk (the chart writes a resolved class explicitly); only the stated justification is inaccurate, and tests/worker_image_beta_default_class_test.yaml pins it.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Fixed in 64281ba. The comment now says CDI creates no claim in that case, and that the beta annotation matters only because the chart writes the class onto the worker disk. The test header and the commit message carried the same claim and are fixed too.

IvanHunters all three notes are in 64281ba. For the nodegroup.yaml:334 one, the commit and the title are marked breaking now, and the body and release note say which pools it hits and what to do. Only a pool that has not cloned yet is affected, a cloned pool reads its class from its own claim, and a test pins both. The push dropped your approval, could you take another look? |

Verdict
LGTM
The three golden-image guards (the Go image picker, the vm-disk chart, the kubernetes-nodes chart) get one shared predicate: a DataVolume that is not Succeeded, with status.restartCount >= 3 and the Running condition False. I checked the predicate is the same in all three places, verified the CDI behaviour it leans on against the pinned upstream (v1.66.1), mutation-tested the guard in both the Go suite and the chart tests, and ran the chart's siblings against the head merged with current main. The breaking change is well scoped and documented. Everything below is non-blocking; both prior blockers' actionable halves are resolved.
Findings
- [MINOR]
packages/apps/kubernetes-nodes/templates/_helpers.tpl:477, Empty storageClass now resolves to the virt-default, which can refuse a not-yet-cloned pool that rendered before
- [MINOR]
packages/apps/vm-disk/templates/dv.yaml:38, The restart-count predicate stays armed through an otherwise-healthy long import
- [NIT]
pkg/registry/core/option/providers.go:390, The predicate reads the first Running condition in Go and the last in the charts
Checked and correct
- CDI v1.66.1 (
kubevirt/containerized-data-importer):status.restartCountis populated from the importer pod and never lowered, theRunningcondition exists, andGetStorageClassByNameWithVirtFallbackreads the virt-default annotation first and then the GA default (beta is never read), with the newestcreationTimestampthen the name ascending as the tie-break. The predicate and the resolver both match that, and thevminstancechainsaw step pins the two signals on a real unreachable VMDisk. CodeRabbit's tie-break note was correctly withdrawn:lookupreturns the classes name-ordered, so strictgtkeeps the alphabetically first on a timestamp tie, which is what CDI does. - The Go predicate and both chart guards are mutation-tested load-bearing: reverting
restarts < 3reddens the Go test, and wideningge $goldenRestarts 3reddens the chart tests. - The empty-storageClass resolution and the cross-class refusal already exist at the merge base, so they are not introduced here. The only behaviour change for a stock cluster is none: with no virt-default annotation the resolved class is unchanged. Two further edges are CDI-aligned and exotic: a cluster with the GA default on one class and the beta default on a newer different class now resolves to the GA one (CDI ignores beta), and the multi-
Running-condition disagreement between the Go and chart predicates is unreachable because CDI keeps one condition per type. - No schema, default or enum changed (descriptions only); the RBAC edit is a comment, the existing
datavolumes get/watch/listalready covers the new status subfields. Shipped defaults keep the pool and its golden onreplicated, whichcheck-worker-image-catalog-defaults.batsenforces, so a stock install never meets the cross-class refusal. - Merge with current
origin/mainis clean;go test ./pkg/registry/core/option/...,helm unittestfor both charts (66 and 236), and the directly-edited bats pass. Live CI on the head is green, includingUnit & controller testsandE2E (in-tree). A local full bats run showed eight unrelated failures that are not about this change: the package-graph and overlay tests pass in isolation (they only broke under contention in the long single-threaded run), andcilium-ipam-migration.batsfails the same way on a cleanmaincheckout in this environment.

[MINOR] Empty storageClass now resolves to the virt-default, which can refuse a not-yet-cloned pool that rendered before
Carried from an earlier round; this is the intended, documented ! change, so a note rather than a request. On a cluster that carries storageclass.kubevirt.io/is-default-virt-class on a class other than the Kubernetes default, with its golden on the Kubernetes default, a not-yet-cloned osImage.builtin pool whose storageClass is empty at both the pool and the application level now resolves to the virt-default and is refused where it rendered before. It is gated to not-yet-cloned pools (a cloned pool reads its class back from its own PVC and keeps rendering), a stock cluster is unaffected because nothing in-tree sets the annotation, and the resolution matches CDI's GetStorageClassByNameWithVirtFallback. One design point for your call: on the builtin path the resolved class is always written explicitly onto the worker disk, so CDI's own fallback never runs for it, and the only consumer of the resolution is the cross-class comparison. Treating an empty pool class as equal to the resolved golden class on the builtin path would render both the case this PR fixes and this one. Non-blocking.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
I'm keeping the refusal. Since #4796, vm-disk resolves an empty class the same way and refuses the same cross-class clone. Mapping an empty pool class to the golden's class only in kubernetes-nodes would make the two charts read an empty class differently. It would also put the worker disks on a class nobody picked, while for CDI an empty class means the virtualization default. The affected pool is narrow, and the error and the release note say how to get out of it. If this should change, I'd do it for both charts in one follow-up.

[MINOR] The restart-count predicate stays armed through an otherwise-healthy long import
Carried from an earlier round; the error-text half is now fixed, this is the part that remains. CDI never lowers status.restartCount, so a golden that took three or more importer restarts early in an otherwise-healthy long import stays refusable for the rest of that import: any later moment with the Running condition at False (the importer pod being recreated for a scratch PVC, a node drain, a Pending schedule, an image pull) trips the guard, and in that window a vm-disk create fails to render, the kubernetes-nodes release fails whole for not-yet-cloned pools, and the image drops from the picker. It self-heals as a flap through the HelmRelease retry. The message now names the recreated-pod startup window; worth one more sentence in the known-limits is that a healthy import with three early restarts stays exposed until it reaches Succeeded. Non-blocking.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
The known limit in the PR description now says that: a golden with three early restarts stays refusable whenever its importer is not running, until the import reaches Succeeded. I'm not changing the predicate here. The chart keeps no state between renders, so it can't tell a slow healthy import from a stuck one, and a refused render is retried anyway.

[NIT] The predicate reads the first Running condition in Go and the last in the charts
goldenImportFailing returns on the first Running condition it finds, while dv.yaml and nodegroup.yaml iterate and keep the last one. A DataVolume carrying two Running conditions of differing status would make the Go picker and the charts disagree. CDI keeps one condition per type, so this is unreachable in practice; worth aligning only for consistency.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
CDI keeps one condition per type, so the Go picker and the charts can't disagree on a real DataVolume. I'm leaving it as is.
CDI moves an import to Failed only on a fatal error such as a checksum mismatch. An unreachable URL restarts the importer with back-off while the DataVolume stays in progress, so the Failed check let such a golden through and the clone waited forever. Treat an importer that restarted at least three times and is not running as failing too. Assisted-by: LLM Signed-off-by: Aleksei Sviridkin <[email protected]>
The worker image guard refused only a golden in phase Failed, which CDI reaches on a fatal error such as a checksum mismatch. An unreachable URL restarts the importer with back-off while the DataVolume stays in progress, so a pool pinned to such a golden waited forever for its first disk. Refuse an importer that restarted at least three times and is not running, under the same already-cloned exemption as Failed. Assisted-by: LLM Signed-off-by: Aleksei Sviridkin <[email protected]>
… image options CDI moves an import to Failed only on a fatal error such as a checksum mismatch, so the picker still offered a golden whose URL is unreachable: its importer restarts with back-off while the DataVolume stays in progress. Drop a golden whose importer restarted at least three times and is not running, the test the vm-disk and kubernetes-nodes charts apply before cloning. Assisted-by: LLM Signed-off-by: Aleksei Sviridkin <[email protected]>
…n default CDI binds a kubevirt-content DataVolume that names no class on the class annotated storageclass.kubevirt.io/is-default-virt-class before it falls back to the Kubernetes default. The worker image guard resolved an empty class to the Kubernetes default only, so on a cluster carrying both it compared the golden against a class the golden was not on and refused a pool that matched it. CDI's fallback reads only the GA default annotation, so the beta one no longer ties with it: a class carrying only the beta annotation is picked only when no class carries the GA one. CDI then creates no claim at all for a DataVolume naming neither a class nor access modes, so such a pool gets that class only because the chart writes it onto the worker disk. The resolution also refuses a pool that rendered before: one with an empty class that has not cloned a disk yet, whose golden is on the Kubernetes default, on a cluster where another class carries the virtualization default. Its storageClass is immutable, so it has to point osImage.builtin at a catalog entry on the virtualization default or switch to osImage.factory. A pool that already cloned reads its class back from its own disk's claim and keeps rendering. Assisted-by: LLM Signed-off-by: Aleksei Sviridkin <[email protected]>
The worker image guard, its error message and the storageClass docs said CDI cannot clone across StorageClasses and always falls back to a host-assisted copy. CDI falls back only when the two claims have different CSI drivers or volume modes; with one driver it asks that driver for a clone into the other class. The guard stays, the reason it gives is corrected, and the docs name the virtualization default class an empty storageClass now resolves to. Assisted-by: LLM Signed-off-by: Aleksei Sviridkin <[email protected]>
The golden image guards call an import failing once its importer has restarted three times and is not running, because CDI keeps an unreachable URL in progress instead of moving it to Failed. Assert that CDI reports both on the DataVolume of the unreachable VMDisk, so a CDI change that stops doing so turns this suite red rather than leaving the guards blind. 🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick winKeep Talos PKI while the TenantControlPlane still exists.

What this PR does
A golden image whose HTTP import cannot succeed (a 404, an unreachable host) never reaches DataVolume phase
Failedin CDI v1.66.1: CDI restarts the importer and keeps the DataVolume in progress. The golden-image guards in the vm-disk and kubernetes-nodes charts and theimageoption list keyed only onFailed, so they let a clone of such a golden through, and the clone waits forever. The guards now also treat a golden as failing when its DataVolume is not
Succeeded, status.restartCountis at least 3 and theRunningcondition isFalse. CDI copies the importer's container restarts intorestartCountand setsRunning=Falsewhile the importer is not running, crash-loop back-off included. So any error that makes the importer exit non-zero is caught, and nothing parses the error text. The error says the import keeps failing, gives the restart count, and says the refusal lifts on its own once an import attempt succeeds. A kubernetes-nodes pool that has already cloned its golden is still exempt. One known limit: CDI never lowers the restart count, so a golden that restarted three times stays refusable until the import reachesSucceededwhenever its importer is not running. That covers a recreated importer pod that is still starting, and also a later reschedule or node drain in an otherwise healthy import. The vminstance e2e suite now asserts that CDI reports both signals on the DataVolume of its unreachable VMDisk, so a CDI change that drops either one turns the suite red.Two related corrections in kubernetes-nodes:
storageClassnow resolves to the class CDI actually binds on: the one annotatedstorageclass.kubevirt.io/is-default-virt-classfirst, then the Kubernetes default. CDI reads only the GA default annotation, so a class carrying only the beta annotation is used only when no class carries the GA one. Before, the guard compared the golden against the Kubernetes default and could refuse a pool that matched its golden. It also refuses a pool that rendered before: one with an emptystorageClassat both the pool and the application level that has not cloned a disk yet, whose golden is on the Kubernetes default, on a cluster where another class carries the virtualization default. That pool'sstorageClassis immutable, so it has to pointosImage.builtinat a catalog entry on the virtualization default or switch toosImage.factory. A pool that already cloned reads its class back from its own disk's claim and keeps rendering. Nothing in-tree sets the virtualization default annotation, so a stock cluster is not affected.storageClassdocs (values, README, schema, API type), the platform values comment and the worker image catalog check now say that. The vm-default-imagesstorageClassdoc now names the virtualization default too.The same hang on a VMDisk's own import is not fixed here. A render-time guard cannot catch it, because the VMDisk's DataVolume is created by the same render that would have to refuse it. That check belongs in the WorkloadMonitor, which can reuse the same predicate, so #4059 stays open.
One small follow-up I left out: the kubernetes-nodes comment on a moved default annotation names only the Kubernetes one, and the same reasoning now applies to the virtualization default.
