GitHub refuses to list org container packages to an app installation token, so the retention workflow cannot enumerate what to sweep. Name the packages from the published nightly packages tree instead: it is the tree the nightly mirror copied images for, so it covers every component image that receives dated nightly tags, including those digest-pinned only by the build and therefore absent from the committed tree. A tree that does not reference the packages artifact is refused rather than read as a shorter list. Assisted-by: LLM Signed-off-by: Aleksei Sviridkin <[email protected]>

Line 338 says package names come from the cozystack-packages:nightly tree. The resolver also includes cozy-installer and cozystack-nocloud, which are published outside that tree. Name both exceptions so the documented retention scope is complete.
As per PR objectives, these two packages are included outside the tree.

Verdict
LGTM
Retention had been pruning nothing. The org container listing it used to name packages from now 400s for the app token, and that same token's DELETE was answered 404 even on a version it could list. This reads the names from the published cozystack-packages:nightly tree instead, moves the actual DELETE onto a token that works (secrets.GITHUB_TOKEN), and turns any unresolved name, unreadable version or refused delete into a red run. The reviewed head ran as a dry-run on the runner (run 37942932385, head 2b5a309f): it pulled the tree, resolved 59 packages, warned past the one unlinked package and printed 412 would-delete lines, so the whole path exercised the real registry on this revision. Every failure mode I tried fails closed, and the three new or rewritten bats suites pin that non-vacuously: mutating each one reddened its test. Two small notes below, neither blocking.

Caveats
This PR arms real deletion for the first time (DELETE_TOKEN: secrets.GITHUB_TOKEN). The first APPLY=true run clears the whole accumulated backlog in one pass (the dry-run showed ~411 dated nightlies plus one promotion candidate), and should be watched: a package whose Actions access for this repository lacks package-admin, a public version with over 5000 downloads, or GitHub's 80-content-writes-per-minute secondary limit each becomes a loud per-version ::error:: that carries the HTTP status (so a 403/429 reads differently from a 404) and reds the run, after which the backlog converges over the following days. The declared set is correct: the strict ^0\.0\.0-nightly\.[0-9]{8}(\.[0-9]+)*$ all-tags filter excludes stable, floating nightly, untagged and promotion-* manifests, KEEP=14, and promotion_retention_blocked still gates the promotion sweep. Deletion is irreversible, so confirm the timing before flipping RETENTION_APPLY.
Checked and correct: the resolved names match the real artifact (59, identical to the runner's count) and the 20 cozystack/* packages outside the list carry no dated-only nightly versions, so none is left unpruned; fail-closed on an empty name list, an unreadable linkage read, an unreadable versions page (pipefail carries the gh failure past the trailing jq) and a refused delete; the here-string keeps sweep_failed out of a subshell; xargs on the empty promotion set is a harmless no-op; protection sources 1 and 2 are unchanged; the public artifact pulls without auth and yq was present on the runner (the on-head dry-run succeeded). shellcheck is clean apart from one SC1091 info.

[MINOR] an all-unlinked nightly sweep exits green having pruned nothing
A package whose .repository.full_name is not $GITHUB_REPOSITORY is skipped with unlinked=...; continue and never sets sweep_failed. If every resolved package were unlinked (today only cozystack/cozystack-ui is), the nightly sweep prunes nothing, the one signal is the warning at line 280, and the run still ends green at Done.. That is the opposite of the name-resolution path, where an empty list sets sweep_failed=1, and the promotion sweep at lines 298-316 deletes from cozystack/cozystack-packages with no linkage check at all. Skipping an unlinked package without failing is the right call, since cozystack-ui is permanently unlinked and failing on it would red every run; but consider flagging when names resolved yet nothing was swept, so retention cannot silently turn into a no-op.

It fails closed now. If names resolve but none of the packages is linked to this repository, the step logs an error and the run goes red after the promotion sweep, the same way as an empty name list. The contract test pins it.

[NIT] shellcheck SC1091 on the sourced library
shellcheck without -x reports SC1091 (info) here because it does not follow the sourced hack/lib/image-refs.sh, even though the shellcheck source directive is already on line 27. Run the repo shell lint with -x, or match whatever the other sourcing scripts in hack/ do. Info-level, no runtime effect; shellcheck -x is clean.

I'm leaving this one as is. The # shellcheck source= directive is the same one the other hack/ scripts that source image-refs.sh use, and they all report the same SC1091 without -x. The repo doesn't run shellcheck in CI or pre-commit, so there is no lint config to change here.
The org container-package listing answers 400 to the app installation token, so the job has never reached its sweep. Take the names from the published nightly tree via hack/retention-packages.sh and keep calling only the per-package versions endpoints, which accept that token. An unresolved name list now fails the run: the nightly publishes into these packages daily, so an empty list cannot mean there is nothing to prune. It skips only the nightly sweep. The promotion sweep reads one fixed package and is kept safe by the protected set, which the name list does not feed, so it still runs. A versions read that fails, in either sweep, is reported with the API error and fails the run once the rest is swept, instead of aborting the step through set -e. A failed candidate read leaves no ids behind. Assisted-by: LLM Signed-off-by: Aleksei Sviridkin <[email protected]>
A refused DELETE only logged a warning, so a token without delete rights left an apply run green with nothing removed. Move the delete into hack/retention-delete.sh, which reports each refusal as an error carrying the API status, still tries the remaining versions, and exits non-zero; the workflow turns that into a failed run after the sweep. Assisted-by: LLM Signed-off-by: Aleksei Sviridkin <[email protected]>
The app installation token lists package versions but its DELETE of a listed version is answered with 404, while the repository's GITHUB_TOKEN with packages: write deleted the same version without any change to package settings. Deletes therefore go through GITHUB_TOKEN; listing keeps the app token. That deletion was shown on a package linked to this repository. A package linked elsewhere is not attempted: it is skipped before its versions are read and named in a warning, so it cannot turn every apply run red. A failed read of the link still fails the run, and so does a sweep in which no resolved package is linked, since that sweep prunes nothing. What this PR does
The Artifact Retention workflow has failed every day since mid-August, and it never pruned anything. It lists the org's container packages with
GET /orgs/cozystack/packages?package_type=container, and that endpoint answers400 Invalid argumentto the app installation token the job uses. Others hit the same in actions/github-script#449 and cli/cli#9606. An old|| trueused to hide it. This is item A19 in #3278.The per-package endpoints accept the same token: a probe run confirmed it, and the dry-run below read every package with it. So the job no longer lists the org. The new
hack/retention-packages.shtakes the package names from the publishedcozystack-packages:nightlytree, reading refs through the sharedhack/lib/image-refs.sh. It also addscozy-installerandcozystack-nocloud, which the nightly publishes outside the tree. The committed tree can't be the source: it misses images whose digest only the build pins, and those still get dated nightly tags every day.Failures now turn the run red instead of passing silently:
hack/retention-delete.shlogs an error with the HTTP status, goes on with the remaining versions and fails the run (before, this was only a warning)Promotion-candidate protection itself is unchanged. The contract test that pinned the old org listing now pins the new behaviour, and both new scripts have bats tests.
Known gap: a component that disappears from the nightly tree drops off the list, so its old dated nightlies are never pruned. Today none of the packages outside the list has more dated nightlies than the keep window.
Dry-run on this branch is green: https://github.com/cozystack/cozystack/actions/runs/38075159900. It resolves 59 packages, skips
cozystack/cozystack-uiwith the warning, and would delete 418 old nightly versions plus one abandoned promotion candidate. Deleting needs a different token. The app token lists versions, but a one-version apply run (https://github.com/cozystack/cozystack/actions/runs/37939905343) got404 Package not foundon DELETE for a version it had just listed. The same DELETE with this repository'sGITHUB_TOKENand the job'spackages: writeworked in a second run (https://github.com/cozystack/cozystack/actions/runs/37941084456), with no change to package settings. Sohack/retention-delete.shnow deletes withGITHUB_TOKEN, and listing stays on the app token. That delete was shown on a package linked to this repository. One of the swept packages,
cozystack/cozystack-ui, is linked to another repository, and I didn't try deleting there. Such a package is skipped before its versions are read and named in a warning, so it can't turn every apply run red. The follow-up for it is in #3278.RETENTION_APPLYstays off, so the scheduled run is a green dry-run until someone turns it on.Screenshots
