I propose to rename the feature early, as its current name is easily confused with the OVN feature.

A virtual router is usually a cloud-provided entity. Here we provide the ability to use a virtual machine as a router (which usually also requires some additional configuration effort in most clouds). AWS uses the term "middlebox appliance" and GCP uses "router appliance". I'd prefer the latter.

I've mentioned "middlebox appliance" and "router appliance" as alternative terms so that readers can recognize them.

But... I'm the administrator (windows joke).
This document is intended primarily for administrators. Should it be "Only the cluster administrator can enable the router feature on a virtual machine."?
Also, 's/functionality/feature/'.

If both parts are likely done by the same person, why don't we merge them into one chapter?

Timofei Larkin (@lllamnyp) It would be nice to explain why we need to disable anti-spoofing. Can you give a short explanation?
There was a problem hiding this comment.
We'll need Andrei Kvapil (@kvaps) for that. I'm not sure I understand the network setup fully for this use case, I guess when the VM is a router, it has IP packets coming from it that don't have the VMs IP as the source address and this gets blocked by default.

Ok, I've reworded it a bit, hope it sounds better now.

Nick Volynkin (@NickVolynkin) Timofei Larkin (@lllamnyp), when forwarding packets through this VM, the packets leaving the VM have a source IP address different from this VM. To prevent these packets from being dropped, we need to disable anti-spoofing protection.

346-350: Section: Creating a Virtual Router
This section concisely explains that a Cozystack administrator account is required. Consider adding a brief note on why an administrator is needed (for example, outlining any elevated permissions or security implications) to help less experienced users understand the context.
350-381: Ordered List Formatting
The steps for setting up a virtual router are all marked as "1." which is a common Markdown shorthand relying on auto-numbering. Please verify that the final rendered output displays sequential numbering for clarity. Additionally, the use of<br/>to force line breaks is acceptable if it meets your formatting needs, but double-check its compatibility with Hugo’s Markdown rendering.
353-359: Step: Disable Anti-Spoofing Protection
The providedkubectl patchcommand is clear and correct. However, a short explanation of why disabling anti-spoofing is necessary (for example, to prevent legitimate network traffic from being dropped by strict security policies) would add useful context for administrators.
361-367: Step: Restart the Virtual Machine
The commands to stop and start the virtual machine are straightforward. It might be helpful to mention if a brief waiting period is expected between stopping and starting to ensure a clean restart, especially in slower environments.
381-396: Step: Configure Custom Routes
The instructions and YAML snippet for adding custom routes are well structured. To further assist readers, consider including a brief explanation of the roles of the"dst"(destination network) and"gw"(gateway) fields, clarifying that the snippet must be adapted if multiple routes are needed.

339-345: New Section: Virtual Routers Overview
The new "Virtual Routers" section clearly introduces the feature added in v0.27.0 and uses alternative terminology ("router appliances" and "middlebox appliances") to aid user recognition.
368-379: Step: Retrieve the IP Address
Including the commandkubectl get vmialong with a sample output helps users verify that the VM is running and to locate its IP address. This is clear and practical.
337-399: Overall Feedback on Virtual Router Documentation
The new section is comprehensive and systematically guides the administrator through each required step—from creating the VM to configuring custom routes. Please ensure that all commands have been tested in your environment, and consider adding troubleshooting tips or common pitfalls if end users encounter issues.

342-344: "Creating a Virtual Router" Subsection: Prerequisites and Clarity
The subsection properly informs the reader that a Cozystack administrator account is required. To further assist readers who may be unfamiliar with the network configuration, consider adding a brief explanation on why administrator privileges are needed (e.g., modifying VM settings or editing tenant namespaces requires elevated rights).
347-353: Step: Disable Anti-Spoofing Protection – Command Detail
The providedkubectl patchcommand is expressed clearly and achieves the goal of disabling anti-spoofing protection. It would be beneficial to include a brief note (or link to an explanation) outlining why disabling port security is necessary for routing non-primary IP packets; this extra context can help administrators understand the network trade-offs.
337-400: Overall Documentation Integration & Additional Context
The Virtual Routers section is well integrated within the existing virtualization documentation, providing a thorough, step-by-step guide. As an enhancement, consider adding a troubleshooting or tips subsection for cases where thekubectl patchcommand or other steps might fail. This additional guidance would further empower administrators during deployment.

337-341: New Virtual Routers Section: Clarity & Completeness
The new section introduces the virtual router feature clearly, including the alternative terms ("router appliances" and "middlebox appliances") and a reference to the version in which the feature debuted.
348-351: Step 1 – Create a VM Instance: Clear Guidance
The instruction to use the standardvm-instanceandvirtual-machinepackages is clear. This guidance appropriately leverages existing documented concepts and directs administrators to follow familiar procedures for creating a virtual machine instance.
354-359: Step: Restart the Virtual Machine – Clear & Concise
The instructions to stop and start the virtual machine usingvirtctlare straightforward. The code block is well formatted and provides the necessary commands for restarting the VM instance.
360-367: Step: Retrieve the IP Address – Clear Instructions
The guidance to runkubectl get vmito retrieve the VM’s IP address is clear. Consider emphasizing that the retrieved IP must be noted for configuring custom routes in a later step.
372-388: Step: Configure Custom Routes for a Tenant – Annotation Clarity
The instructions and YAML snippet for editing the tenant namespace to add custom routes are clear. It might be useful to include a note that administrators should replace the example values (e.g.,"gw": "10.244.8.56"and"dst": "10.10.13.0/24") with those that correspond to their own network environment.

339-345: Introduction of Virtual Routers Section:
The new “Virtual Routers” section clearly introduces the feature and its alternative names ("router appliances" or "middlebox appliances"). Verify that the version tag ([v0.27.0]) is accurate and consider adding a brief note on the intended scenarios for using virtual routers.
346-350: Section Header and Admin Requirement Clarification:
The “### Creating a Virtual Router” header is descriptive. It might help to reiterate at the beginning of this subsection that these procedures require a Cozystack administrator account to eliminate any ambiguity for readers.
350-352: VM Instance Creation Step Formatting:
The instruction for creating a VM Instance is concise and clear. The use of an inline<br/>is acceptable if it renders correctly in Hugo; however, please confirm that this formatting is consistent with the rest of the documentation.
353-360: Disabling Anti-Spoofing Protection Details:
The providedkubectl patchcommand to disable anti-spoofing is correct. Consider adding a short explanation—such as noting that disabling anti-spoofing is necessary to allow the VM to route packets with non-standard source addresses—to help administrators understand both the functionality and its security implications.
361-367: Restarting the Virtual Machine:
The steps usingvirtctl stopandvirtctl startaccurately describe the restart process. A brief note indicating any expected delays or prerequisites before the VM can be restarted might improve user guidance in troubleshooting scenarios.
368-373: Retrieving the VM IP Address:
The command to runkubectl get vmiis straightforward. It may be beneficial to mention which column in the command output displays the IP address, so users know exactly where to look, especially if the output format changes in future releases.
381-400: Custom Routes Configuration Explanation:
The directions for editing the tenant namespace to add custom routes are well detailed. Consider including a brief explanation of how the custom routes influence network traffic to pods within the tenant, and ensure that users double-check the JSON syntax embedded in the YAML annotation (especially the indentation and array format).
