docs(air-gapped): fix tenant Kubernetes registry mirror step for v1.6 - #743
IvanHunters wants to merge 1 commit into
Conversation
The patch-containerd Secret described in step 5 was removed in Cozystack v1.6 because it has no consumer in the Talos-based worker machine config. Replace that section with the current talos.registryMirrors, talos.imageFactoryURL and talos.installerRepository fields on the Kubernetes resource, and document the current in-guest pod-pull mirroring limitation. Applies to both the next/ trunk and the v1.6/ release docs. Assisted-by: LLM Signed-off-by: IvanHunters <[email protected]>

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Clarify that registryMirrors also covers workload image pulls.
This field passes through to the worker's machine.registries.mirrors, which configures registry image pulls; it is not limited to Talos-managed images. Workload pulls for configured registry hosts use this mirror too. (github.com) Keep the limitation for imageFactoryURL and installerRepository, but do not say that in-guest pod pulls are unsupported.

site:github.com/cozystack/cozystack release-1.6 api/apps/v1alpha1/kubernetes types.go registryMirrors Talos CRD
💡 Result:
In `release-1.6`, `api/apps/v1alpha1/kubernetes/types.go` defines Talos image settings (`imageFactoryURL`, `installerRepository`, `schematicID`, and `version`), but I found no `registryMirrors` field in that file. Its Talos settings concern the worker OS image and installer—not container image pull mirrors. ([github.com](https://github.com/cozystack/cozystack/blob/release-1.6/api/apps/v1alpha1/kubernetes/types.go))
The search result mentioning a registry mirror refers to **KubernetesNodes node groups** on the later `main` branch, not this `release-1.6` Kubernetes API type. ([github.com](https://github.com/cozystack/cozystack/releases/?utm_source=openai))

🌐 Web query:
cozystack release-1.6 generated CRD Kubernetes spec talos registryMirrors preserve unknown fields pruning
💡 Result:
**Short answer:** the Cozystack 1.6 Talm docs describe `registryMirrors` as a map keyed by registry host, with each value containing an `endpoints` list. That establishes it as a **Talm bootstrap input for generating Talos configuration**—not, by itself, a field in a Cozystack Kubernetes CRD’s `spec`. ([cozystack.io](https://cozystack.io/docs/v1.6/install/kubernetes/talm/))
The docs don’t establish whether a **generated CRD schema** preserves unknown fields under `spec.registryMirrors`. To answer that, the specific CRD’s published schema must be inspected for `x-kubernetes-preserve-unknown-fields: true` at that field or an enclosing schema node. If it is absent, Kubernetes normally prunes fields not described by a structural schema; preservation is opt-in for a subtree. ([github.com](https://github.com/kubernetes/website/blob/main/content/en/docs/tasks/extend-kubernetes/custom-resources/custom-resource-definitions.md?utm_source=openai))
So: **don’t assume `registryMirrors` survives CRD pruning just because Talm accepts it.** The exact CRD name and generated YAML weren’t established by the sources found.

Do not document registryMirrors as a v1.6 Kubernetes.spec.talos field.
The release-1.6 Talos API type defines imageFactoryURL, installerRepository, schematicID, and version, but it does not define registryMirrors. This example presents an unsupported v1.6 API setting. Remove this stanza or mark it as requiring a release whose Kubernetes API defines the field. Do not rely on it for worker-node mirror configuration.

What
Step 5 of the air-gapped install guide ("registry mirrors for tenant Kubernetes") documented the
patch-containerdSecret. That Secret was removed in Cozystack v1.6: it has no consumer in the Talos-based worker machine config, so the documented procedure silently does nothing on current releases. Why
An operator following the current page on v1.6 configures
patch-containerdand gets no registry mirror on tenant worker nodes — a real problem in an air-gapped setup, where worker boot then depends on public egress that is not there.Change
Replace the
patch-containerdsection with the mechanism available since v1.6 on theKubernetesresource:talos.registryMirrors— passthrough to the workermachine.registries.mirrors(withskipFallback: trueper host to enforce a true air-gap instead of falling back to upstream)talos.imageFactoryURL— mirror/self-hosted Image Factory for the worker OS disk imagetalos.installerRepository— mirrored OCI registry for the Talos installerIt also documents the current limitation: in-guest pod pulls (workloads inside the tenant cluster) are not yet covered by a per-tenant mirror override and are a follow-up.
