Steps to Reproduce

I'm trying to display alert dialog with listview inside

    I'll try and sort this out if you'll provide an example of the failure that's copy and pasteable.

    It looks as the the Dialog wants to shrink-wrap its ListView.builder() child, but the child doesn't have an intrinsic size. In other words, if your dialog builder were to return SizedBox(height: ..., child: dialog) I think you could work-around the problem.

    @HansMuller I've added param but I still see the error, then I've copy pasted your version and it gives me same error even with fresh installation.

    Tested on android emulator and real device, both running 8.1 also iphoneX simulator gives result

    That's pretty strange. I'm using an old Nexus 5, running 5.1.1 with the current "tip of tree" Flutter.

    However: I was able to reproduce the problem with a PIxel running 8.1. Looking into it now.

    It turns out that the error you were running into was due to the IntrinsicWidth widget added by AlertDialog.

    RenderViewport does not support returning intrinsic dimensions.

    The easiest way to avoid the problem is to create your own Dialog class that doesn't wrap its content with an IntrisicWidth widget.

    This certainly is a confusing failure mode. The AlertDialog docs could warn about this case. The AlertDialog class could make its own shrinkToFit IntrinsicWidth widget optional.

    Thanks for your help, I hope dialog widget could be improved in a way you described it. For now I just workaround issue by nesting content of dialog into scroll view, however I will try custom dialog in the future if it will not be solved by the framework.

    I have only one question why it was working on your Nexus with older android?

    I'm not exactly sure why the "RenderViewport does not support returning intrinsic dimensions" error doesn't occur on the Nexus 5. I assume it has something to do with the difference in screen widths; will have to look more closely to sort that out.
