Flutter application freezes when scrolling certain ListViews where the dimensions of objects create arithmetic underflow

Steps to Reproduce

1.run attached main.dart
2. scroll to the right until image is off screen
3. scroll to the left until image is on screen
4. if 3 succeeds, repeat 2 and 3 until the app freezes.

This flutter application has a vertically scrolling ListView that contains a horizontally scrolling ListView. When that nested, horizontally scrolling ListView contains a Card that contains a NetworkImage near the beginning of the ListView, the app will freeze when scrolling away from the Card and then back towards that Card. In other words, if you scroll to the right, and then back to the left, it will freeze almost every time, before the Card with Image is visible again. To be clear, it always freezes, but sometimes I have to scroll left and right multiple times before it does. This freeze occurs on both my emulator and my physical device, which are running Android 5.1 and 8.0.0, respectively.

In the smallest reproducible form right here, there are several comments indicating variations I have tested that result in the freeze no longer happen, which suggests that its somehow the combination of the following:
-- At least two ListViews, the second nested in the first
-- A large image file ( 120kB doesn't freeze, 2 MB does)
-- A Card containing the image -- a Container containing the image does not freeze.
-- shrinkWrap: true on the nested ListView

@jonahwilliams I don't seem to find a PaintingBindings, only PaintingBinding, and the version I have of that does not appear to have a maximumSizeBytes, only maximumSize . I set that to 24,000 (b/c it crashed on 104857600), but its still freezing. (I don't have anywhere near 24000 images -- orders of magnitude less).

Sorry for the typo, PaintingBinding is correct. My mistake, maximumSizeBytes isn't in that beta version. I'll take a look and see if I can reproduce the error

Update: My new problem does indeed seem to be the same as this old problem - my app is again stuck in an infinite loop in RenderShrinkWrappingViewport.performLayout . (Thanks @jason-simmons for identifying where the problem is happening - made it easy to identify that this is the same issue again). It's somewhat surprising in that the changes to the layout were pretty simple - adding a stack and a floating action button.

I've got a rough idea of the reason the infinite loop happens, but I need to dig deeper to figure out the right way to fix it. The crux of the problem is that the scrollOffsetCorrection returned by RenderViewportBase.layoutChildSequence is so small, e.g. 2.842170943040401e-14, that when added to the double offset.pixels, the 'corrected' pixel value is the same double value as the previous value. (In my case, the pixel.offset is around 270 to 300.) The subsequent logic in various classes' layout methods ultimately produce an infinite loop when the parent geometry doesn't change (and is identical to the child's).

This tiny scrollOffsetCorrection is being computed by RenderSliverList.performLayout. The tricky bit is figuring out which class should be responsible for accounting for this floating point precision problem, and whether such accounting can fit within the current class interfaces.

Seems that people are on this and have some reproducible code. I ran into the same(?) issue today with very different code. Thought it might be of interest to the experts out there. Create a small App based on what I saw. This app fails on iOS simulator (XR) and physical iPhone 6s+. Both freeze after a bit of vertical scrolling. The added component that brought the failure to me was wrapping the ListTile title and subtitle Text in a FittedBox(BoxFit.scaleDown).

Hi guys, I'm having the same problem with 6 images inside a ListView. The images are big, around 431x377.

The freeze happens on Simulator and on a real iPhone 6. The app doesn't crash.

Hi @idealopamp,
I tried to replicate the issue using the code you provided on latest stable (1.20.2) and on Android 8.1.0 device, but I didn't see the app freeze when I tried to scroll right and left multiple times.
