Navigating to a new page causes the Image errorBuilder to be ignored.

Hey there! Ran into this issue and been stuck at it for a while now. Created a little sample project and the issue remains.
Not sure what's going on here. Any help is appreciated but I fear it's a bug with flutter itself.

Due to the nature of the images, a 404 can be returned. This is no problem, attach an errorBuilder! The problem arises when I try to push a new route. For some reason, the error now is no longer being handled properly.

Is it? The rebuild of the Widget is not really a problem here. The problem is that for some reason it does not use the errorBuilder that's being provided in this rebuild.

One way around is using a pushReplacement() and then a WillPopScope() that handles returning to the same page as before on the new page. The previous page loses its scrolled index (if it had any, and has to rebuild) but, with more code work, you can also make that as a passable argument and restore it, if the previous page didn't require any data, else you need to pass everything in the new page, even if not needed and then pass them back as arguments to the WillPopScope().

This issue is specific (at least the example) for web-loaded images.

You can create something similar for the web using http, checking if instantiateImageCodec is disposed correctly.

Still an issue in 2025. A question for the image stream code maintainers: was the errorBuilder never intended to offer developers a way to handle thrown errors? If it was, why is this issue ongoing? If it wasn't, please state this in docs and close this issue with an explanation.

Current state forces you to use "workarounds" or "hacks" to surpress errors and avoid whatever crash reporting system you use to be clogged with non wanted reports. The framework shouldn't promote the use of workarounds and hacks, but this not being fixed already certainly gives the impression it does, and that's not the Flutter we want.

I know this is open source and it's for anyone to fix, but truth to be told, contributing to Flutter basic image features isn't easy, for several reasons, no matter how senior you are. Here's still hoping that features like showing a network image would be looked after by internal code maintainers.
