Support for Linux RISC-V #99963

Description

@TheOneWithTheBraid

Use case

RISC-V is an upcoming CPU architecture which can similarly to ARM result in very energy-efficient processors. I won't start a discussion on benefits or issues related to RISC-V architecture; there are plenty out in the internet and in scientific environment.

Even though RISC-V is not very common for desktop or mobile devices yet, there is definitely momentum in the development RISC-V. Most major Linux and BSD distributions support RISC-V, such as Ubuntu, Debian or FreeBSD.

  • Present: not many use cases. There are a few Linux-capable development boards as well as one fully featured desktop SoC available.
  • Future: expectedly more. There's a lot of ongoing development in the RISC-V community.

And what makes Linux all-day usable: Flutter of course. I would like to have this issue as a tracker for possibly upcoming RISC-V support and implementation.

Proposal

Flutter currently supports amd64 and aarch64 on Linux. I'd propose to add support for RISC-V in addition.

This should mainly consist of:

  • patches in the engine and Flutter tool to handle RISC-V
  • pre-built Engine snapshots for RISC-V

RISC-V now has experimental support in Dart, and is available for Linux SDKs from our beta channel: https://dart.dev/get-dart

Given the slow CPU and low performance I've seen on the Allwinner D1 when running the Dart compiler, which at the moment is in the cheapest and most readily available development board, I think it would be most useful to start with supporting Linux on RISC-V using the same approach as Flutter has for mobile OS's (Android/iOS) as it would be a much better developer experience vs trying to do on-device development the way Flutter currently supports on Linux (and MacOS, Windows).

@maks Have a look at the StarFive VisionFive2 board which is more adequate for onboard development.

Thanks I do have the Vision five 2, but it's also too slow for reasonable on board development. Even a RPI4 is really too slow in terms of Dart compile times for decent DX when trying to do onboard development.

I support RISC-V for Engine and artifacts using Yocto, and have validated the Toyota custom embedder running flutter-gallery on a Deep Computing device. Layer and recipe located here:
    https://github.com/meta-flutter/meta-flutter/tree/scarthgap/recipes-graphics/flutter-engine

Aside from the patches I have, it does require a newer version of the LLVM toolchain than what stable has. I believe it's one or two point releases beyond.

The recipe produces binaries and tools (dart/gen_snapshot) suitable for building and running AOT apps on the Linux GTK embedder.

    Support was merged August 6th:

AGL demonstrated Flutter running on RISC-V at Embedded World; which RISC-V support was merged last August (2024). AGL is based on meta-flutter.
