It would be nice if Data.Vector.Mutable (and variants) had a safe read option (or perhaps read with default) of the form (name is irrelevant to me)

safeRead :: PrimMonad m => MVector (PrimState m) a -> Int -> m (Maybe a)

    It is worth noting that massiv offers such an interface: https://hackage.haskell.org/package/massiv-0.5.8.0/docs/Data-Massiv-Array-Mutable.html#v:read
