No Camera Found on laptop (Microsoft Surface Book 2) #1468
I am new to Linux (and NOT a programmer) & I cannot seem to get either of the built-in cameras to be recognized. What am I missing to be able to share video &/or my screen in a Google Meet, Zoom or Teams meeting?
Here are the details about my laptop:
Hardware Information:
Hardware Model: Microsoft Corporation Surface Book 2
Memory: 16.0 GiB
Processor: Intel® Core™ i7-8650U × 8
Graphics: Intel® UHD Graphics 620 (KBL GT2)
Graphics 1: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060
Disk Capacity: (null)
Software Information:
Firmware Version: 394.779.768
OS Name: Ubuntu 24.04 LTS
OS Build: (null)
OS Type: 64-bit
GNOME Version: 46
Windowing System: X11
Kernel Version: Linux 6.12.3-surface-2
I'm not sure I remember everything I've tried so far, but I found this: https://github.com/linux-surface/linux-surface/wiki/Camera-Support & the commands returned "command not found" for me, so I suspect I don't have all the required elements/dependencies even though this is a fresh install & "all packages are up to date". I think I found the bin files, but they are in a zst that I don't have permission to uncompress.
I added the app Cheese that opens with the warning "There was an error playing video from the webcam", and the camera app still says "No camera found".
I also found this page: https://libcamera.org/getting-started.html & copy pasted the first section of code to install libcamera-tools that I was told should contain the camera, but I don't know how to to access or what to do with these tools. I also don't know how to check to see if I have all the required dependencies.
I booted in BIOS a few times & turned everything on, but now I believe I have the IR camera off. So I can change these settings again if need be.
There were other things I tried from old camera related questions, but nothing has worked for me so far.
Hi @ginoel — you're on kernel 6.12.3-surface-2 which should support the Surface Book 2 cameras. The issue is most likely missing packages or group membership. Here's how to set it up:
# List detected cameras
cam --list
# Or with v4l2:
v4l2-ctl --list-devices
4. For Zoom/Meet/Teams
These apps use PipeWire for camera access on modern Ubuntu. Make sure PipeWire is running:
systemctl --user status pipewire
If it's not active: systemctl --user start pipewire pipewire-pulse
Note for kernel 6.19+ users: There is a separate regression in kernel 6.19 where the dw9719 VCM driver lost its I2C device ID table, causing cameras to completely fail. This is being fixed in PR #2123. If you upgrade to a 6.19+ kernel, you'll need that fix.

Hi @mabdiyan - I think you posted your comment on the wrong thread. This one is an open question about a laptop camera not working.

Hi @ginoel — you're on kernel 6.12.3-surface-2 which should support the Surface Book 2 cameras. The issue is most likely missing packages or group membership. Here's how to set it up:
1. Install libcamera and PipeWire packages
If
libcamera-appsisn't found, try:2. Add yourself to the video group
sudo usermod -aG video $USERThen log out and back in (or reboot).
3. Test
