libwacom-surface breaks Ubuntu 26.04 upgrade #2076

Description

@danielzgtg

The libwacom-surface caused do-release-upgrade to refuse to upgrade from Ubuntu 25.10 to 26.04. The release upgrade succeed after removing libwacom*surface*. After rebooting, I could not reinstall it:

    Just to add to this, on a fully fresh Ubuntu 26.04 install following the steps in the guide will actually uninstall the whole desktop environment.

    Check linux-surface/libwacom-surface#22 (comment) for a potential workaround for Debian-based systems.

    Wanted to jump in on this. I apologize if this isn't the right format pretty new to github commenting.

    Been running 26.04 LTS on a i5-7300U Book 2 for a few months now. Occasionally check if I can install libwacom-surface but still wants to nuke the desktop environment. I'm honesty fine without touch support as the other 26.04 upgrades are worth the loss particularly gaming performance, only used it occasionally when I undocked the system prior to installing 26.04 but would still rather have it than not.

    fine without touch support

    libwacom-surface has nothing to do with touch support

    I apologize for the misunderstanding on my part it quit working after I removed it to finish the upgrade so between that and the name I guess i made that assumption incorrectly. I guess my issue is a different one then seeing as iptsd is installed thank you for the reply.

    @rikmills The main LP bug is https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-release-upgrader/+bug/2150245 . Maybe I should've linked it earlier

    This is Won't Fix.

  10. rikmills commented on Oct 1, 2026

    @rikmills

    @bagratte Correct. The issue is packages in a 3rd party repository that are incompatible with upgrading 24.04 to 26.04. Either a user needs to remove the incompatible packages, or the 3rd party repo needs to make a fix. Either way it is not a bug in Ubuntu.
