This ensure that the module gets created a link target added. The
trick is tell automodule to not document members.

This is slightly better than using the module directive as it at
least pulls the docstring.

closes #9331

PR Summary

PR Checklist

  • Has Pytest style unit tests
  • Code is PEP 8 compliant
  • New features are documented, with examples if plot related
  • Documentation is sphinx and numpydoc compliant
  • Added an entry to doc/users/next_whats_new/ if major new feature (follow instructions in README.rst there)
  • Documented in doc/api/api_changes.rst if API changed in a backward-incompatible way

This ensure that the module gets created a link target added. The
trick is tell `automodule` to not document members.

This is slightly better than using the `module` directive as it at
least pulls the docstring.

Indeed. But can you not put the link on http://matplotlib.org/api/pyplot_summary.html instead?
(Not going to block on this as the PR is already an improvement but that'd be better).

Yes, that is probably a better place for that.
