If anyone is interested here are the reference esp-idf files:

  • esp-idf/components/esp_event/include/esp_event_legacy.h
  • esp-idf/components/esp_wifi/include/esp_wifi_types.h

  • esp-idf/examples/common_components/protocol_examples_common/connect.c

Tools to check that the device got a ipv6:

$ avahi-resolve-host-name esp32.local -6
esp32.local fe80::7e9e:bdff:fe3d:9df4

$ ping6 esp32.local
PING6(56=40+8+8 bytes) fe80::8c0:7ee3:70f3:e87e%en0 --> fe80::7e9e:bdff:fe3d:9df4%en0

Since this PR was opened there has been a new .ipconfig() API added to the network module and the network interfaces, to provide support for IPv6. And the rp2 port has IPv6 enabled.

Can you please explain how this PR works with the new .ipconfig() methods? What exactly does this PR do? If we want to enable full IPv6 support on esp32, including configuration support via .ipconfig(), what needs to be done?

I haven't checked the new .ipconfig() methods so I have no idea, this just automatically gets an IPv6 address on a GOT_IP event.

If we want to enable full IPv6 support on esp32, including configuration support via .ipconfig(), what needs to be done?

No idea and not sure if it is even supported? see https://docs.espressif.com/projects/esp-idf/en/stable/esp32/api-guides/lwip.html#ipv6-support

It states there that is is supported, but it's only supported by auto configuration (IE DHCPv6 or SLAAC)

Having IPv6 support on esp32 is definitely desirable. But this PR is old and it would be better to work with the new ipconfig() interface.

So I'll close this.
