Incoherence in installation instructions regarding the snap package #10976

Description

@giacomoguiduzzi

Greetings,

I was following the instructions to install Nextcloud using the latest version of the Snap package on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS and I couldn't connect to Nextcloud's web interface. The instructions at the following page https://docs.nextcloud.com/server/latest/admin_manual/installation/installation_wizard.html say to connect to http://localhost/nextcloud, but I got 404. I figured out after some time that the correct URL was http://localhost/.
I thought of letting you know so you can fix the docs, or fix the discrepancy in the snap package if the other methods (like the Docker container) actually work on that URL.

Best Regards,
Giacomo Guiduzzi

    That URL definitely needs some explanations around it since it'll vary in webroot versus subdirectory installations.

    This comes up throughout the manual and isn't limited to Snap. Some places we call out the differences while other places it's one way (webroot) or the other (subdirectory) without any context or explanation - leaving it to the reader to adapt every reference differently.

    Seems we have three choices:

    • Standardize on call-out that we use for every instance URL reference
    • Use a universal placeholder URL + rely on people reading about what to do in the introduction (of the manual? Of each chapter? Where?) [Maybe Sphinx has something cool to help with a repetitive bit like this?]
    • Come up with a cool way for someone to enter their own URL and it magically appears throughout the manual when they view it :)

    Any one have any other ideas?

    Still present. admin_manual/installation/installation_wizard.rst line 13 hardcodes http://localhost/nextcloud with no note that the URL varies by installation type.

    Snap installs (and webroot installs generally) serve at http://localhost/, not http://localhost/nextcloud. The subdirectory path only applies when Nextcloud is installed into a subdirectory of the web root.

    At minimum, line 13 needs a note clarifying this, e.g.:

    The URL depends on your installation. For subdirectory installs: http://localhost/nextcloud. For webroot installs (including snap): http://localhost/.
