I find problems people keep tripping over, then ship the smallest thing that fixes them. I do this on the Tinkering R&D team at Taleemabad.

Before R&D I spent five years on backend. At Taleemabad that meant Django on AWS for 10,000+ daily users: 40% lower API latency, zero-downtime migrations on tables with millions of rows, and 60% faster incident recovery.
